Guests say

North Lodge is a charming cottage in Grasmere, praised for its excellent location and beautiful gardens. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the addition of Wi-Fi. The property's character and cosiness are noted, with the convenience of local amenities and attractions being a short walk away. While some guests mention areas for improvement, the overall sentiment is positive, with many enjoying their stay and the cottage's homely feel.

The cleanliness of North Lodge receives mixed reviews. While some guests find it comfortable and tidy, others note issues with cobwebs, dust, and general maintenance. The presence of spiders and a report of a dirty make-up wipe suggest room for improvement in cleaning standards.

The location of North Lodge is highly praised, being within walking distance to Grasmere village and local pubs. Its proximity to walking paths and the village centre, along with secure parking, make it an ideal base for exploring the Lake District.

Guests generally find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, especially with the log burner. However, some guests mention that the furniture is past its best and the mattresses could be upgraded. The comfort of the living room is noted, but improvements could enhance the overall experience.

Facilities at North Lodge are well-received, with a well-equipped kitchen and ensuite bedrooms. However, there are comments about the need for maintenance, such as the cooker's condition and the leaky window. The addition of Wi-Fi is appreciated, but some guests suggest that the property could benefit from a few updates.

There is insufficient information to score thoughtfulness accurately. While some guests mention a lack of basic kitchen products and cleaning materials, there are no consistent references to gifts or extra touches that would indicate the level of thoughtfulness provided by the hosts.

About this property

This delightful, Victorian lodge is set back from the Ambleside to Keswick road under Butter Crags, on the outskirts of Grasmere. Enjoying good views and a lovely garden, North Lodge offers a fabulous escape for families or two couples eager to explore this magnificent National Park in Cumbria. It is wonderfully presented throughout, with bright colour schemes and plush furnishings, making the most of an ideal setting. Enter through the front door into the cosy sitting room, where beamed ceilings and a green slate fireplace provide a welcoming atmosphere, along with plush settees and a flatscreen TV for entertainment. Move into the cottage-style kitchen where the chef of the group can relish in some home-cooking, with all the appliances, cooking utensils and crockery you could need for a self-catered break. Head upstairs to find two wonderfully presented bedrooms, including a double and twin, both with crisp white bed linen and en-suite facilities, so there is no queueing in the morning! Begin your morning in the well-maintained garden, before strolling into Grasmere village to source the ingredients for a hearty breakfast. Get to know your surroundings further by following the footpaths from the door which will take you up the little fells of Helm Crag and Loughrigg, or you can embark on a journey through Dora’s Field, a delightfully open woodland which was once owned by William Wordsworth. Travel south to Ambleside to find a great selection of amenities and attractions including the scenic waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force and the Ambleside Roman Fort, before visiting the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, home to the popular World of Beatrix Potter attraction where you can see her children’s stories come to life. Lake Windermere is also a must-visit, which is best explored on board the iconic cruiser. North Lodge is a charming dwelling, offering a homely base for all types of Lake District excursions.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

A basic welcome housekeeping pack supplied, the kitchen was well stocked with crockery. Lovely to have a washer and a dryer. Great sized fridge freezer. Our negatives were the cooker needs replacing as in poor condition this has been mentioned by others, one of the 2 storage heaters in the lounge does not work and finally some outside lights did not work which made the steps hazardous.

It was in a very convenient location on the edge of Grasmere. It helpfully had an enclosed garden for our dog which was why we chose it. It is more than adequate for a week’s walking holiday and we did have an enjoyable holiday. On the flip side, the accommodation is a little tired and not always cleaned to the highest standard - mostly non concerning issues such as spiderwebs and some Crockery in the back of the cupboard that was not fully clean. It would benefit from a better shower rather than just the one electric shower and the TV connection is unreliable and did not accommodate us plugging in our firestick for example. (Not enough electric sockets to allow for this either). The fridge, dishwasher and kitchen equipment is plentiful and functioning. The oven is slow but does work. The beds are comfortable. It can be frustrating not to have accurate control of the heating - sometimes the bedrooms were too hot at night and it’s tricky not to have radiators for drying out damp clothing after walking.

Beds firm and comfy. The old large shed could be smaller to make a bigger patio its almost empty. Lovely cosy cottage will be back
