We are frequently asked how far is the property from the nearest pub? In this case it couldn't be closer - you have your own, private steps to one of the most highly regarded pubs in the area; The Beckford Arms. Indeed the pub's cellar is rumoured to extend underneath The Coach House (the original coach House / cart shed for the pub).
The house has been recently updated to provide a comfortable holiday cottage suitable for families or friends. It does however retain much of its original character - including beautiful windows which once adorned the walls of Fonthill Abbey.
On entering the cottage you will immediately see some of the owner's (a well known local antique dealer) eclectic and fascinating collection of artefacts.
The kitchen has been designed for cooks with wooden worktops, plus most of the appliances you could need ! The dining room table is large enough to cater for friends which with the double range or the pub next door covers most options. On this floor you will also find the family bathroom.
On walking up 6 steps to the large comfortable lounge you will find more evidence of the owner's divers range of interests - especially classic cars. The lounge is also home home to a large wood burning stove, ideal for keeping warm on those cold winter evenings.
The ground floor is also home the 3rd (single) bedroom
On the first floor you will the 2 double bedrooms, eah with a king size bed, as well as the second bathroom, this time featuring a large walk in shower (please note - taller guests may have to duck!)
Outside you will find a pretty cottage garden, and off street parking for 3 cars.
The cottage is located in a stunning setting, less than a hundred yards from the entrance to the Fonthill Estate (where Fonthill Abbey used to be located), providing a wealth of walks in the most glorious countryside.
A little further afield you will find the beautiful city of Salisbury (15 miles) in one direction, and the historic town of Shaftsbury (12 miles) in the other. The iconic landmark of Stonehenge is a mere 20 minutes drive away.
The Coach House is a quirky cottage, suitable for friends and families alike.
The most attractive North Dorset village of Fontmell Magna lies between the Blackmore Vale to the west and Cranborne Chase to the east, only 4 miles south of the hilltop town of Shaftesbury and 8 miles north of the Georgian market town of Blandford Forum. The village, named after the chalk streamed Fontmell Brook, is dotted with picturesque thatched cottages and is well served by the local pub serving good food and ales. Surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are lots of lovely walks to be had nearby, whilst the interesting ancient town of Shaftesbury, with its 'Gold Hill' of Hovis advert fame is well worth a visit. Just a little further afield, historic Sherborne's abbey and castle make a good day out, whilst Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury, as well as the beautiful Dorset coast, are all easily accessible.
