    • Wendy - Verified booking

Stayed at The Bothy as a women and her dog, wanting an escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

Wow! Did this place deliver in spades. The cottage is amazing. Quirky. Packed with character. Very well equipped and immaculately clean. Mark and Jo are super hosts. Genuinely one of the nicest couples I’ve met. Whilst they live on site, I never saw them (except arrival and departure) but it was great to know they were there if needed. The scone and fresh eggs on arrival were very welcome too - thank you! Now location…. This cottage is on a hillside in heaven! The views from The Bothy are incredible but there are also so many walks straight from the door and a variety too! Whether you want 1 mile to 50 mile, riverside or moorland, the one thing you can be sure of, is the area has it all. I parked the car up on arrival and it didn’t move again til I left. I walked a total of over 45 miles during the week and never did the same walk twice! Not only that but I reckon I didn’t see more than a dozen people throughout the entire weeks walks!!! Having said that this has to be one of the friendliest places I’ve ever been. Every single person I met was absolutely lovely Nenthead (under a mile away) has a local shop and fabulous cafe (the Hive) and the mine is a great visit. Hopefully the local pub will reopen soon. Alston (3.8 miles) has a variety of shops with a couple of pubs/restaurants. Issac Tea Trail literally runs from The Bothy but honestly this whole area is a walkers paradise. For anyone who’s thinking of booking…. Do it! You won’t be disappointed!!! I can’t wait to return for New Year and this time I’m taking dog and hubby!

We loved Tree Tops for our 3 nights in October 24, 3 walkers plus dog having a go at most of Isaac’s Tea Trail.

The cottage is warm and comfortable, especially the adjoining sitting room and large kitchen with the wood burning stove across both ( which we used- so cosy) The weather was atrocious, but with dog in tow we went out in all our waterproofs. We had some slight reprieves especially walking along the river out of Allendale which was beautiful. Highly recommend the trail, if you have good boots, maps and gear ( and better weather). Could we ask for the following which would have helped our stay? *Clothes horse to hang up wet clothes Also The kitchen tap is dripping all the time The door locks ( including French doors to back) are tricky so perhaps more than just advice is now needed? We are strong and yet still struggled The gate handle needs fixed ( important with a dog to help keep safe as you go in and out) Perhaps a hand towel each would be nice as well as an extra towel in kitchen

The Bothy is an absolute gem, a comfortable place to come back to after a day out walking in the hills, a fabulous location and made to feel very welcome by Mark and Jo.

The eggs and scones were all appreciated, and it was lovely to enjoy breakfast hoping the red squirrel would visit the bird feeder (other than one day it was there everyday!). No matter the mixed weather, and other than one day's short trip into Alston, the car stayed parked, as the walks out were fantastic and in fact a reason I am already looking forward to coming back as there are still more to enjoy. For me a magical part of the stay was to be in the hills seeing and hearing the curlews, seeing curlew chicks on the ground, and providing memories of long ago holidays, lovely to see them again. The Bothy gave me the relaxing yet fun filled break I was hoping for, in a part of England I had not appreciated is truly magical, and somewhere I was made to feel truly welcome. Once again, thanks Mark and Jo and hope to be back again very soon!

We have stayed her before and all was great.

This trip when we arrived the heating sounded like a jack hammer in the house. It was the heating. After reporting an engineer turned up on Monday. 2 Sleepless nights later. When they looked at the system they stated they could not fix it as the room where the fault was was locked. The system became quieter but did not work properly for the rest of the week. The engineer stated it would partially work until the fault was fixed. So we were cold at night. The back door lock was broken and an locksmith turned up Tuesday to fix. There was a broken handle on the entry gate and the rest fell apart but i managed to put it back together to get us in. 1 Handle was broken off on arrival. Overall we love the place and this trip was disappointing due to the problems.

We booked this cottage looking for a relaxing break and we weren’t disappointed.

Tree Tops is a wam, clean and comfortable cottage in a friendly village in beautiful countryside. The kitchen had a most impressive double fridge/freezer, the shower in the bathroom was excellent with almost immediate hot water and the range of programmes on the television in the comfortable lounge couldn’t be bettered. However being in my 80’s I found the entrance door very difficult, at times nearly impossible, to close and lock properly because of its very tight fit. Despite that minor problem we had a wonderful stay and we returned home refreshed and relaxed. Thanks for making our holiday so memorable. Hopefully we will be able to return in the future. John,Susan and Lyndsay Stanton.
