What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mattheuw - Verified booking

What to say, we stayed at Stable Cottage for 3 nights.

What a find, the pictures don't do it justice. A beautiful cottage ina small and quirky village, 2 miles from Barnard Castle. The cottage was clean, and had everything you need. Hot tub was a bonus, only thing I'd say is that it could do with some lighting from the tub to the door but that's just me. Couldn't fault the place. We went to thr local club, The Pinfild Club on the Friday night and met and chatted with locals, played pool, so nice. If you like running, perfect up from the cottage into Barnard and back just over a 10km. Bed are so comfy too and I'm not the easiest to please with the bed type, shower was great and powerful. We shopped before we went but there are some small supermarkets in Barnard where you can get essentials. We went for a walkaround High and Low force kne day, was only about 25 mins drive or so, then Durham the other day. Perfect location for the cottage, so nice to be away from the lights and noise but not too far. TV has netflix etc installed which is a bonus for the chilled nights after sitting in the tub. Will definitely go again.

      It was all ok.

Not the luxury we imagined though. The hot tub was very nice as were the treats left for us. The cottage is in a lovely village and is opposite a great little social club. The cottage itself was cluttered. The mattress and duvet were old and stained. The bathroom wasn't overly clean and is quite outdated. The hot tub needs more attention if it is being used frequently by guests and it turned cloudy despite my request for a clean. The shower wasn't secured to the wall and we had to call for the owners to fix it, but the quick fix didn't work. We couldn't secure the upstairs outer door very well either. The garden wasn't really very private and we had a number people pass by when we were in the tub or using the patio. The gravel path under the main bedroom window is very noisy and we were woken early on a couple of occasions. We had a nice time exploring the local area and beyond though. Barney is a lovely town, well worth a visit.

The overriding issue was that Sykes added an extra £140 on the original booking when we had to defer the holiday due to unforeseen circumstances which meant that Hawthorn Cottage was overpriced for the accommodation on offer.

The “free parking” was on the opposite side of a busy main road and it wasn’t always possible to park close to the property. Transferring suitcases became a challenge to say the least. The cottage itself was clean and tidy but very small and the lack of privacy both in the front room and the backyard could have been improved upon. The provision of logs for the burner was welcome but a set of saucepans and a bread knife would have been even more so. The packet of biscuits as a welcome pack was pleasant but to be honest, after a long drive, a small bottle of milk plus some teabags would have been more useful. Judging from the comments of other guests in the visitors book, we are in the minority but based on our experiences of many other holiday rentals Hawthorn Cottage was disappointing, sadly; especially in view of the overall cost of the holiday.

Stable cottage is gorgeous and full of character.

It was very clean and comfortable with everything you need in the kitchen to prepare food. The locals are very welcoming, and I can imagine the perfect place to live. Trish was in contact throughout my stay as she lives close by. The garden was secure so our dog couldn't get out, the hot tub was spotlessly clean. I had a couple slight niggles, the hot tub wasn't up to the correct temp so couldn't be used the 1st night (the owner wavered the early exit from the tub on the last night to compensate) If you are in the hot tub and someone uses the shower and they don't pull the blind down you can see everything! The TV kept buffering alot which made it impossible to watch anything. These things would not stop me returning or recommending to friends and family. Thank you for a perfect stay Melissa
