What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ian - Verified booking

Turn off the A35 onto Loughwood Road towards Dalwood Village and you instantly travel back 50, 60, 70 years to an age when parents taught their children good manners and people had time for each other.

The narrow lanes seem to regulate the pace of life. No boy racers here! The Cider House is set in peaceful countryside behind a once working farm and what hits you immediately is the silence. Once darkness falls a glance up to the night sky takes your breath away. The house has a pleasant atmosphere and is comfortable but take sundries such as salt and pepper with you. The village boasts a Community Shop which is rather expensive but has some little gems, such as delicious dry cured bacon. The nearest supermarket is 5 miles away in Axminster. The village pub, The Tuckers Arms, is warm and welcoming and serves good food but be sure to book a table. Nearby Lyme Regis (9 miles) is good for seafood but don’t expect too much from Honiton Market (it may be better in season, but our visit on an October Tuesday had three stalls). It’s hard to see how anyone can fail to enjoy their stay at the Cider House. We had a super time.

A nice place to stay with everything we needed, well positioned too.

This was first time we'd gone anywhere with our dog and he was made welcome. I would recommend it as a nice enough place to stay without a dog too! All I'd question is that the living room is upstairs and kitchen downstairs which makes it difficult to persuade a dog to go back downstairs to sleep if you've been watching TV upstairs together. Hence ours slept upstairs in the living room. We had covers in case he went on the sofas. But he could nudge open our bedroom door easily so we had some disturbed nights. I did find the lounging chair very comfy to sleep on during those nights. On windy nights the light kept going on outside which shone into the living room spooking the dog. There's a washing machine but you need to check the owners aren't already using it. It's a bit ancient and is used a lot. Lovely owners though. Helpful. Chatty. Generous. Thoughtful. I'd go back, but without the pooch.

Superb property, Set amongst, and located in a very peaceful and relaxing area, as one would generally expect in this part of Devon !

With plenty of Wildlife !! Finding the location is somewhat more difficult, My Car SAT NAV. navigated us directlly there, through somewhat very narrow hedgerow lanes However, you wouldn`t really know you`d arrived, because the Property has no Name plate or inscription, we continued to the next village and spent another hour or so eventually arriving at `Monkleigh Mill`. Unfortunately we didn`t get to meet The owners, Julia & Paul, who were away on Holiday themselves they had provided written directions directions ariving from the East M5/A39 but we discovered far better easier access to the property the next day ! This is not a critism! just a little informative feedback.

The owners of Thorny Tallett, Clive and Lyn, we incredibly kind and helpful throughout our stay.

They made every effort to help us make the most of the house, providing us with fuel for the log burning stove, fresh bedding for our second week, and even called round to see how we were settling in! The house was exceptionally clean, very comfortable and beautifully kitted-out and we had an amazing time their making memories as a family. The communication with Sykes was excellent and we really appreciated the effort the company went to to get us in (we booked just two days before the start of the holiday!) Customer service was excellent, much better in person (phone) than the website (which can be a bit clunky). Thanks for a wonderful holiday! The Paisley family

The cottage was great, location and facilities were wonderful but I have marked down for two reasons.

There were no fans- the cottage was rather hot and in these increasingly hit summers it was so uncomfortable we had to go out and buy a fan to cool the room for the children to sleep. Second was the black leather 3 piece suite in the lounge smelt fairly strongly of cigarettes. As non smokers it was a massive issue for me and I didn't want the children to sit on the sofas without a blanket as it transferred to their clothes and hair. I would strongly recommend it have a through and professional clean befor the next guests as it was rather an uncomfortable issue during the 5 day stay. Apart from that everything else was great.
