What our customers say about their holidays

    • Matthew - Verified booking

His is the first time that I have been disappointed with a Sykes holiday cottage, and I have been using your company for many years.

When we arrived on late on Saturday afternoon we noticed that both bathroom windows had been left open, the reason for this became perfectly clear the following morning as there was a vile smell that pervaded throughout the upstairs rooms, but was particularly unpleasant in the bathroom. So on the Sunday we bought some air freshener, but this only took the edge off it, although did prevent it spreading beyond the bathroom. On the Monday, I bought some drain cleaner/unblocker and poured it down the sink, this I left for 4 hours and then rinsed with hot water. Finally by around Thursday, the smell was all but gone. You have to understand that the smell was so awful it made me want to vomit. I have never known such a terrible pong, and i have worked in some pretty smelly places. So to the rest of the cottage, mostly it was alright, although we did think that the kitchen was a bit under supplied with cupboard space. The clock wasn't working, so we put a new battery in it, a light bulb went pop in the lounge so I had to change this too. The outside light didn't work, which didn't make for easy access in the dark due to all the steps. We used the washing machine mid week but then found that there was rather a limited number of pegs! The hot tub wasn't especially clean, with bits of the cover and flies floating in it whenever we used it. Certainly not upto our usual standard of holiday stays. Thankfully we enjoyed good weather when we were down for our fortnight, so we were able not to have to spend too long in the cottage. That said, we did like how the fence shielded you from the road noise. The walk to the cliff top was nice, and the views along the coast were spectacular at sunset. One of the positives of our stay were the guide books, as we like to do a fair number of walks, the local one through Tehidy was quite pleasant. It was nice to get the welcome hamper on arrival and to have milk in the fridge. I think my only other quibble was that it was very hard to get out onto the road as it is totally blind pulling out of the drive. If there was a mirror opposite it would make life far easier. Would I stay here again? Absolutely not. Especially for the money that we paid. I have stayed in far nicer holiday cottages in Devon and Cornwall and will not be returning to this one.

Five elements cottage was a nice quiet place to stay in Cornwall.

The Farmhouse and Studio are also holiday lets so some noise was expected but this is a rural part of the county so most times all you hear is birdsong and a local cock crowing. The road to the cottage is unpaved and very rough and bumpy so we were glad of our four wheel drive. The Cottage is at the side of steep hill so it can get windy at the cottage even if its warm at sea level. We did an onsite Yoga class with the owner which was excellent. We used the hot tub a few times which was a lovely added feature to the cottage. The cottage was clean and tidy when we arrived. We cooked all our meals in the well equipped kitchen and there are two sets of tongs in the drawer now in response to customer feedback. We did not use the BBQ but it comes with a full set of BBQ tools. The freezer and washing machine are in the utility room and all we longed for was a tumble dryer as the weather was not great for drying our cycling kit outside . But there is an rack to hang clothes on that can be put up indoors and outdoors. Our main issue with this cottage was the interior design which we would have liked to have known about in the marketing brief from Sykes purely for health and safety reasons. The doors frames upstairs are very very low and there are some steep steps up to the two double bedrooms and one step down to the bathroom and single bedroom off the upstairs landing. We kept banging our heads or missing a step. We are not tall but anyone over six feet will struggle at this cottage. Likewise toddlers would find the steep staircase and steps from the lounge to the dining room and then again from there to the kitchen difficult to navigate. For this reason we would not rent this cottage again.

The cottage is beautiful with a serene surrounding, secluded and private so just what we were looking for It was excellently equipped with everything you needed and could want And the cottage itself is beautiful and quirky However the hot tub was a big disappointment for us as we always book somewhere with a hot tub and this was the worst hot tub we have ever had in the most expensive property we have ever stayed Alot of the jets don't work and for such a beautiful accommodation that sleeps 7 I would have expected a top of the range hot tub or spa bath However it is a basic range hot tub with only 1 pump attached when it can have 2 We walk in excess of 20,000 steps everyday and usually make extreme use of a hot tub It does not comfortably sit 4 people let alone 7 A few things bothered me that I noticed which could make this property even better, as it feels like the love is missing since the award was won in 2017 I had to clean the grill before using it as it was dirty, there was a disposable razor in top of the mirror from Previous people, the tops of the wardrobes are filthy discovered when we got our bags down at the end of the holiday so I wasn't looking for dust And the artwork around the house is not from the local area but from Zealand which I guess is a connection to the owners but it would have been nice to have local artwork Overall we enjoyed our stay very much it was a lovely private location with lots of great information for local walks and activities which we did, the cottage is a stunning building and you probably won't be disappointed

Nice cottage with everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

Cosy living area and a large dining table for family meals. Nice patio area with plenty of seating and we enjoyed the hot tub. The property is part of a complex of a few other properties but still felt very private. All spotlessly clean. Pretty much everything we needed in kitchen although a couple of smaller saucepans would be nice and there were loads of champagne flutes and not many wine glasses which seemed odd. Two fridges and a freezer which was great. Great location, close to st Agnes which had the most beautiful beach. All in all a pleasant stay with just a few minor niggles - As per another review we did struggle a little as we have a 16 month old and the floors are quite up and down so we spent a lot of time chasing her to stop her falling down steps. Would be helpful if listing mentioned this, pretty much every room has a step or two into it. A stair gate to go between lounge and hallway would be useful so we could have caged her in! The beds and pillows were feeling a little tired and weren't particularly comfortable, although they did have good quality bedding. The upstairs bathroom shower area would benefit from a refresh, some tiles looked a bit rusty or something. Would benefit from a tumble drier or at least another clothes airer or washing line as difficult to dry a whole load. All minor things really which didn't detract from an enjoyable stay

Five Elements Cottage is a nice property in a great location, handy for many places.

It has a lovely kitchen and bathrooms. However, some more details of the layout and a floor plan on the website would be useful. For instance, it would be good to know that the utility (where the freezer is located) is at the opposite end of the cottage to the kitchen, and that the ground floor bathroom is not near any bedroom (including the ground floor twin, which is directly off the living room). The stairs are steep and there are steps up or down- some of them high- to access every room, as all the rooms are on different levels. Also, there is a long flight of shallower steps plus 5 steep steps down to the front door from the car park, which makes moving heavy luggage a real task. None of this is really clear from the description. I don’t think this cottage would be suitable for those with reduced mobility, as even the ground floor bedroom and bathroom are both down two steps from the living room. It would be great to have a welcome folder in the cottage with recommendations for local eating, places to drink etc, and instructions for the various appliances. This is the first place we have stayed that hasn’t had such a folder. Also, the hot tub is a great addition, but all of the jets do not appear to be working, so it maybe needs servicing.
