Lovely house in a great location.

It was really warm and toasty and there was always hot water. However: 1) the duvet on the front bedroom double bed needs replacing. All the filling has disintegrated and is in clumps. Plus it’s not big enough for the bed. 2) my father in law found a pair of pants under one of the beds in the front bedroom with the single beds in. Not sure the cleaners are very thorough as they definitely weren’t his! 3) one badly cracked wine glass and two chipped mugs in the kitchen cupboard. Again the cleaners can’t be checking after each rental. 4) the duvet on the double bed in the ground floor bedroom is too small for the bed, it just about touches the edge of the mattress. Also the sink in the en-suite bathroom is way too small. You can only just get your hands in it. It’s fit for a cloak room not a bathroom. 5) dust and dog hairs under the easy chairs and tv cabinet. My mother in law got covered in it when retrieving our dogs ball which had rolled under them. Again cleaners not doing a good job. 6) rusty roasting dish needs replacing, as does the large frying pan. The oven also needs a thorough clean. We cooked each night so noticed these things more than some people might. 7) the Dyson hoover runs out after 2 minutes use, there must be a loose connection in the charging point. 8) no hanging space in any bedroom for clothes. My in laws only had two bed side cabinets in their room. This needs addressing. 9) the door sticks badly in the front double bedroom. 10) mirrors are needed in the ground floor bedroom and upstairs twin rooms. No where to look when you’re drying your hair. 11) the standing mirror in the upstairs front double room is really wobbly. 12) the dining table chairs aren’t great. They really need replacing. A couple are really wobbly and wonky. 13) dirty glass measuring jug in the kitchen. I had to wash it before use. 14) some dirty knives and forks which we had to wash before use. I know this sounds like a real moan, but unless you’re informed of these issues you can’t make them right for the next people that rent the house. Overall we had a great holiday, but it could have been outstanding had the above issues not occurred. I would be grateful if you could email me directly to confirm that you’ve received my comments.

Cottage was very pretty inside and out and spotlessly clean, situated in a pleasant quiet location with ample parking.

The complimentary cream tea was nice too. The pictures on Sykes Website need updating though, as they now have different furniture and fittings, and the bathroom has also been updated. Although we had a, mostly, enjoyable stay, unfortunately there were several annoyances. The mattress on the bed, we found, was uncomfortably soft and so neither of us slept particularly well. Also, something we never experienced before (and we have been to many cottages), we ran out of hot water. On day one a bit of (breakfast) crockery and cutlery was hand-washed in the washing up bowl. Next some hot water was used for shaving and finally we each had a (normal) short shower. Clearly that was just too excessive because after that there was only lukewarm water left. I am amazed none of the other reviewers have experienced the same. The problem is that the hot water supply is on a timer which (only) comes on three times over a period of 24 hours. To our surprise we found that the next day the water still wasn’t much warmer, so we forwent a shower and boiled water to do the dishes and wash ourselves. It felt almost like being on a camping holiday, rather than staying in a luxurious cottage. It wasn’t until day 3 that the water was back to the desired temperature. We had super quick showers after that, wary the same would happen again. I can’t say this experience added to our enjoyment of the place. The owner also does not want you to turn the fridge up higher than setting 2, being overly concerned that frost will build up in the freezer compartment. It would be good to have a fridge thermometer really, because the items that were in the fridge didn’t feel very cold. At least that way you’d be sure the fridge has the correct temperature inside. When we booked the property in 2019 it had a washing machine, which is what we prefer, but this was removed in 2020 (we had to reschedule our visit due to Covid) so that was also a bit of a disappointment. I am afraid that due to these annoyances we will not be returning.

The property had the potential to be a really amazing place to stay.

We’ve come to porthtowan for years, and decided to stay here. On arrival the property appeared clean at a glance, barring the marks/scuffs to walls, and gaps between the laminate flooring in the kitchen. And the kitchen was well stocked with appliances and utensils. However the smell on entering in the property was horrific, to the point we had all windows and doors open the full stay and had to buy air fresheners and room sprays to make it tolerable. The downstairs en-suite sink was blocked, the master en-suite shower head was Brocken and tied up with a cable tie, and the family bathroom shower wasn’t working at all. The fridge shelf was broken so when we put the milk I the full thing fell out. I would say there wasn’t enough comfy seating for the amount of people who can stay there, and the mattresses really do need changing as they were so uncomfortable, you could feel every spring in your back. The bedding was lovely and clean and the pillows and duvets were all nice. I will say the owner was excellent at responding to our emails and was great at keeping us updated on trying to get someone to the property to check our concerns. He also informed parts had been ordered for the showers that had broken. We managed to unblock the sink ourselves whilst there also. We are also aware that costal properties often get drains blocked due to the sand , however the smells whilst there was definitely more than sand. We were very disappointed with our stay, especially as porthtowan is our favourite place to come every year as a family. But the property has the potential to be perfect, with some time money and a good deep clean.

The cottage was great but just lacked a few finishing touches that we have experienced in other similar calibrate properties.

While the property does does not have a washing machine, and is not need one you only get one set of towels for a week and no facility to wash. Suggest extra towels are provided. The scones were welcome but you only got a couple of tea bags and coffee sachets. A few more would benefit so you don’t have to go straight out and purchase more. 2 dishwasher tablets were provided but other properties provide 7 or more as again so you have to go out to buy a full pack as soon as you arrive. Similarly no bin bags are left for use. As said theses are small items but for a couples premium cottage make a large difference and have a negligible cost The property has some great features with the beams and oak doors but then is let down with the cheapest laminate oak effect flooring which is lifting in front of the fridge and would benefit from a better calibre oak laminate being fitted to match the fabulous doors. Similarly having one odd colour curved kitchen door to the rest of the fitted cabinets detracts from the work that has gone in to make this holiday cottage. The kitchen could benefit from a few more items like a butter dish and measuring spoons and utensils as these are limited for the calibre of property. The outdoor seating would benefit from some cushions for the chairs left for use by guests These are only minor things and would not stop us returning to the property in the future but make a massive difference in the overall experience and align to the calibre property this is, that other properties now provide, to exceed expectations

Impossible to get hold of Cornish Cottage Holidays easily.

Email address provided does not work so getting issues resolved quickly is not simple. Sitting on the phone waiting for CCH to answer is not much fun when on holiday. More of an issue with the booking agency than the owner. Owners response to our issues arrived after we had left the property, more than 10 days after we notified them. Place not fully clean when we arrived. Rubbish bin in kitchen needs replacing as the lid doesn't work properly. Parking for #17 needs to be more clearly marked as the space on the gravel is undefined - other people parking there made it inconvenient for us. #17 has 2 allocated parking spots. The drive to and from the main road through the narrow lane needs the potholes filled in - after 2 weeks of driving and up down, my car was pleased to get a break. If you dont like driving in narrow lanes, don't stay here. Property is nice size for larger group with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms which is very handy. Wifi was excellent and never blacked out. Overall, reasonalbly good place but we will probably return to our usual place next year which is quieter and more private that this complex.
