What our customers say about their holidays

    • Matthew - Verified booking

We had an excellent stay at Knowl Lodge with our dog, we found the cottage extremely comfortable, with everything one would need for a short break (kitchen/cleaning items, towels, internet, radio etc.

) and Anna the owner is very friendly. The garden of the property is big and secure, so our dog was free to potter around on its own without being able to escape. The property itself is on the top of quite a large hill in an incredibly quiet and peaceful location, surrounded by fantastic views over the moors. As long as you follow the directions in the booking email it's very easy to find. It's a good idea to bring some food with you as it's a long walk to the nearest shop, although there is a pub at the bottom of the hill which does lunches and dinners, which is worth a visit (walkable along public footpaths in around half an hour). The location is also a perfect starting point for numerous hiking trails and circular routes for example, to Stoodley Pike and Withens Clough Reservoir, or Hebden Bridge and Todmorden etc. Many of these footpaths are clearly marked and identifiable. However, Google is no substitute for a good OS map. We have already recommended Knowl Lodge and would be more than happy to book a repeat visit.

I was very happy with my stay at Shep Cottage.

The cottage is well designed and is in very good newly renovated / clean condition. It is warm, and everything works. There is lots of off-street car parking, and the outbuilding and patio area are great of you cycle, with both indoor and outdoor security loops for securing bikes, and facilities for washing bikes with a hose etc. The location is great, with uninterrupted views of the hills from the property itself, but easy access to a nearby cafe / farm shop (and a couple of breweries!), and then lots of other cafes, pubs and shops / supermarkets within just a few miles. There's plenty to do locally, and there is easy access by train to Bradford, Leeds etc. within a few miles. The owners provided helpful information before I arrived, and were contactable locally if there were any issues (which there weren't) and the whole stay was very straightforward. I'd be very happy to stay in this property again and would warmly recommend it to others, after staying in a wide range of other rental properties over the years.

We stayed in Shep Cottage and absolutely loved it.

It was warm from the minute we stepped in and super cosy. From the log fire to the comfy couches and high quality decor throughout, the cottage was welcoming from the minute we arrived. You'll almost certainly want to have a nice cup of coffee in bed in the morning; the bed and bedding is luxurious and it has a stunning view over the moors which will be hard to leave. Once you do finally get going, head to Craggies for the best farm shop, and we've tried quite a lot. We had breakfast (loved the two espresso options for those who prefer a stronger or milder cup, plus excellent veggie and meat breakfasts using their own produce) and then took cheese pie and dauphinoise potatoes back to the cottage; it was so good we went back the next day for more. About 10 mins from Hebden Bridge and walks on the moors from the door, plus the hosts Helen and Peter couldn't have been more helpful. The only issue was, on our last day, we didn't want to go home.

We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages and Shep really impressed us.

The cottage is more spacious than we expected from the photographs and is immaculately clean - you feel as if you’re the first people to stay there which is lovely. The cottage has been finished to a very high standard, the beds are extremely comfortable as are the sofas. The linen, towels and blankets are all good quality too, it is a great home from home. The kitchen is well equipped, and having access to a proper freezer for storage is very handy! Sometimes in rural cottages the water pressure is a bit lack lustre but not here - the shower is excellent. Although this is a mid terrace cottage we never heard any noise from other occupants either. As a family of 3 this was an ideal base, the television worked well as did the internet. We found the location ideal for exploring this part of the country and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.

    • Diane - Verified booking

The road leading up to the lodge right from the turn off 500 yards past the Robin Hood Pub was horrendous to negotiate as there were numerous deep pot holes at various locations to navigate.

The journey of 1.5 miles took 20 minutes to travel. On the first morning we discovered there was no power in the kitchen and tried on several occasions to contact the owner who lived onsite without success, eventually I rang Sykes Cottages and the owner who was away for the weekend contacted me by phone, suggesting we reset the fuse box which we had already tried. Their second suggestion was that perhaps a fuse had tripped in their house and I was given instructions where to locate their fuse box, their daughter was in and said there was not a problem. We after several visits to and thro to locate a switch in their home which had tripped and had caused ours to do the same. The kitchen itself could have been better equipped but was adequate.
