What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sarah - Verified booking

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this high grade barn conversion.

It is spacious and warm with very comfortable top quality furniture and fittings, and excellent wifi provision. The hosts, Catherine and Sam, are just across the drive and made sure we had everything we needed. The generous welcome pack of Yorkshire fare and fresh flowers was a wonderful greeting. The location is ideal for long or short walks from the doorstep, either up to the ridge to find the Pennine Way or through woodland and farm tracks around the many reservoirs, plus there is a regular bus to bring you back up the hill from Holmfirth. It is also easy to drive to and explore further afield, such as Ladybower reservoir and Stanage Edge. The pub over the road was open for outside service (April 2021! Covid lockdown slowly relaxing!) wrapped up warm we enjoyed two tasty meals there. Other meals were prepared in the Hayloft, the induction hob was great and the microwave good for reheating meals I had prepared at home, but I struggled a bit using the microwave/grill to cook a meal that recommended oven cooking! Despite being just off the main road and opposite a pub the thick barn walls and double glazed windows meant we heard nothing when inside the Hayloft, it was easy to relax on the leather sofa and gaze at the stunning moorland views. We had a very relaxing visit and would highly recommend a stay at the Hayloft. Just two cautions... If you are tall, over 6ft, you may find a couple of the beams a bit low, but they have been threaded with fairy lights to remind you! Also, beware of the threshold to the drive it has a small hump, our low, long wheel base estate car, grounded the first time we drove in, amusing the pub visitors!

This is one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in.

The overall quality and condition of everything was excellent and the owners seemed to have planned for every eventuality. The garden was properly secure for our two terrier-sized dogs and one of them loved the view over the valley so much he would sit for hours just watching the world below him. The "wash room" at the back was invaluable for muddy dogs as well as human muddy boots and was an added extra that we've never come across before but was so useful and well equipped. The variety of walks from the doorstep was great (although you do need to like hills and a couple of challenging stiles). The views from the house over the valley were especially lovely as we were there during bonfire night/week so got a display just about every night. Views from the walks behind/above the house were spectacular over the hills/valleys. Inside the house was well layed out with every amenity we could think of along with very generous human and doggy welcome packs. Any more "rotund" guests may struggle getting into the shower in the ensuite but there is a full sized bath with shower over in the main bathroom. The extra note from the owner regarding not following sat nav directions to get to the house was a godsend. The turn that the satnav sends you down is extremely tight and steep and comes off a busy A road, although we did find that Google Maps sends you the safer route (from Holmfirth) as suggested by the owner. We would highly recommend Wells Cottage as a base to explore this area from and will definitely be back soon.

      We loved Wells Cottage.

The photos and description were accurate and the arrival instructions were easy to follow. It's a beautiful tastefully decorated period cottage with well designed lounge, fully equipped kitchen, good bathrooms and comfortable beds. The owners have gone beyond expectations to thoughtfully provide everything we needed. There was a lovely welcome basket and milk in the fridge, the kitchen was fully stocked; often in rented kitchens knives can be awful and there's not enough pans etc. Towels in the bedrooms were generous and full size. We loved the lights in the lounge; it felt like staying in a 5 star hotel. We had everything we needed. There was even a programme for the local folk festival and a detailed house guide. When we had questions the owners were quick to respond. The view is wonderful. The only thing I'd say for anyone who has walking difficulties is; it's a very steep walk there and back into Holmfirth or to the pub! Thank you very much for a lovely weekend.

What a joy to have been back in this Haven (for the second time in 3 months).

It's a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing space that has been created with obvious love and great skill and attention to detail and it's simply a joy to spend time there. The beautifully rendered exposed beams and timbers are a constant reminder of the building's former life and, perhaps because I'm from a Farming background on both sides, just add to the feeling of general wellbeing when inhabiting this stunningly re-purposed space. The views from all windows are wild and dramatic in all weathers, the owners are extremely pleasant and present but unobtrusive, the village pub a few steps away from the front door is welcoming and serves great food and good beer, ditto the attached "Pantry" serving breakfast sarnies/savouries/cakes/coffee etc., there's simply nothing not to love about this place. I will definitely be back as soon as I am able and I'm already looking forward to it.

      The Hayloft is absolutely gorgeous!

Catherine greeted us late on Monday and was so lovely despite the fact we were a lot later than planned! She recommended the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to visit which was 30 minutes away. Mam Tor is 45 minutes away and was an incredible hike. Holmfirth is just 5 minutes down the road in car and is a gorgeous little village. The burgers at Lou & Joe’s are the best we’ve ever had - and my boyfriend is American! The loft is clean, tidy and the welcome basket for visitors is a lovely touch. We also had fresh milk in the fridge. There is a book on the side which has sooo much helpful info / recommendations. Everything was just like the pictures if not better. We only wish we could have stayed longer in this lovely place and experienced more of the surrounding areas. It will definitely be on our list the next time we stay here. Thank you!
