What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

This is a lovely cottage situated in Holmfirth next to local walks in the woods with a few amenities (takeaways, bars and a coop) all within walking distance.

A short drive away to Holmfirth village and several walks that are suitable for off lead walking with the dogs. The property is as listed, furnishings are modern and the property is clean. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it for anyone wanting to use the cottage as a base for exploring the Peak District. We are only giving it a 4 star for reasons related to the garden that won’t be relevant to all guests. First we have 2 dogs and we usually like to relax in the garden with them with a few drinks after a day out walking. The garden in this property is very small at the rear of the property with a fence and locked gates either side to the neighbouring properties (I assume this is for access due to the terraced nature of the properties which back onto a high wall). The garden has fake grass and isn’t really a place we felt we could relax in. It was really only suitable to let the dogs out for a quick morning business as the neighbour’s rottweiler would growl and snarl at our dogs through the fence. I don’t blame the rottweiler, they are only doing a good job of guarding their territory but it was a bit intimidating for my two boxers. If the garden situation isn’t a concern for other guests then I’d definitely recommend the property.

We stayed in this lovely little terrace for 2 nights.

On arrival it wasn't too hard to find. Parking is just on the road outside of the property. The first thing we noticed when we opened the door unfortunately was a very strong smell of damp and wet dog. For some reason this smell was only downstairs in the property where as upstairs smelt quite pleasant. Felt rather uncomfortable as I have a very sensitive nose. So didn't cook anything in the property and took food upstairs to eat as I couldn't bare the smell. We bought a can on dog smell deodorising spray with us and even went to a local shop and bought a candle and left the downstairs window open throughout our stay but the smell did not subside. I'm not sure whether we got unlucky maybe from the previous people who visited but I can honestly say this put a huge downer on our stay as the weather was awful and we couldn't go out much. The area itself was lovely and there was a lovely burger restaurant and barkery in Holmfirth and we visited the local reservoir with our dogs which was beautiful.

      We absolutely loved the cottage.

It was lovely, very clean and well decorated. It had everything in it that we could have wanted. The location is good and we tried a couple of the local takeaways. The walks around the reservoirs were really good and the scenery is just beautiful. The dampener for the week, other than the weather, which was very wet, was that the electricity board were working outside all day Tuesday so it was difficult to park near the cottage due to how they had the road blocked off. Then on the Wednesday, they cut the electric from 9am - 5pm so we had to spend the day out all day, mostly in the rain, with 2 dogs - it was not much fun at all. It is not the fault of the cottage owners and there was nothing that they could have done about the situation, however it put a bit of a dampener on an otherwise brilliant stay.

The property and grounds are even better than the photos suggest, don’t be put off by the nearby industry because your a million miles from that once your at the place.

The rooms are spacious & decorated to a high standard & add to this a well equipped modern kitchen & a superb church feeling dinning area, there’s a great choice of bedrooms with different bed arrangements & toilets etc with comfy large beds with plenty of bedding etc. Outside there is a beautiful kept lawn & grounds & also a large outside dinning table & water features, behind the property there’s a wood to walk & explore or walk the dog , then back indoors there’s beds provided to let them relax. The owner Neil is very welcoming & nothing seems an effort for him & is always willing to help you & will do anything to make your stay an enjoyable one & is also the most dog friendly rental I’ve ever come across. I genuinely couldn’t pick a fault with the property or the owner.

It was my 50th birthday celebration with my friends we all enjoyed our stay so much at Woodbottom Farm.

The house was very spacious and the bedrooms and bathrooms were lovely and big. The kitchen & dining room were lovely decorated and big, they need to be for the food and alcohol(mainly the alcohol). Could have done with a bigger fridge and some cooking utensils and a cutlery draw. We did the walk to the Folly Dolly Falls which only took 20 mins, so we carried on to the town to visit the pubs. We got a taxi back and was surprised at the low cost for a mini bus it was £6. Neil & Sharon were lovely hostess so thank you for letting my friends in a little early to decorate the house with my face and birthday banners. Thank you to them both and their lovely holiday home.
