What our customers say about their holidays

    • Margaret - Verified booking

We were very shocked and disappointed on arrival at this cottage.

The outside was extremely unkempt. There were weeds and dried leaves in the front. The gate needed varnishing. The windows had water running down the inside. It looked as though the double glazing had blown. They obviously need replacing. The windows were dirty. The front door needed varnishing. The glass in the front door needed cleaning. There was green mould on the picnic bench and seat in the front. The front of the cottage was not very inviting at all. Nothing like the pictures on the website. The table in the living room for two people was more like one would use for camping. It wasn't very clean. It was right in front of the window and if one wanted to have a meal, there was no privacy as there are a lot of people passing on foot. If the windows are repaired, a blind might be appropriate. The microwave wasn't working when we tried to use it. We rang the owners wife and she told us her husband would purchase a new one and drop it in. He arrived with the microwave. We asked did he want to check it was working but he seemed to be in a hurry. He told us to just set it up ourselves and put the old one in the box outside in the front. That just added to the outside looking more unkept. On removal of the old microwave we were horrified to find something spilled there very congealed. There was a mound of crumbs and a big spider ran out. This had obviously not been cleaned for a long time. There are health and safety issues in an unclean kitchen. The kitchen floor was not clean. There was a plastic bottle behind the bin and some chipolatas on the floor. We had to clean the kitchen ourselves with antibacterial spray and wipes. There were a few live crawling woodlice on the stairs. The bathroom was in need of maintenance . It needed painting there were marks on the skirting boards. The taps on the bath were stiff and hard to turn on and off. The hot tap was swivelling around on turning on and off. The seal on the shower screen needs replacing. It was preventing movement over the bath. The window ledges in the bedrooms were dirty. We cleaned them ourselves. There was thick dust on the back.of the mirror in the larger bedroom. The tops of the bedside cabinets weren't very clean. The mattress on the bed was thin and the springs were sticking in our back. It needs replacing. The iron bedstead was very uncomfortable and noisy. If of all these issues were addressed then the cottage would be of a higher standard meriting more stars It is only a ten to fifteen minutes walk into Howarth. There is a good bus service on the road nearby. There is also a lovely pub a few minutes away with good food and a handy corner shop. We have stayed in a number of Sykes Cottages over the years and generally we have never given a bad review.

With a few tweaks and care the cottage could be improved There was no hand wash in kitchen or bathrooms, no dishwasher tablets, no washing up liquid, -only 1/2inch left in bottle,- no bin liners, chipped crockery, coffee mugs were badly stained.

I soaked them in Steredant tablets before I could use them. the oven, hob and sinks required a good clean, as did the fridge and the broken shelf replaced The shower base was very slippy and nothing to clean it with.. used a small hand towel to stand on when showering. The stairs were very steep and narrow. I was very surprised that there was no smoke alarm, I understood it was a legal requirement in all holiday cottages. No mention of the steps up to the front door, off road parking was mentioned, but it was very tricky parking in the space available. The cottage is not dog friendly, Our JR escaped under the gate on arrival. very steep and rocky path up to small piece of grass available. There was no mention of the steep road up or down to the cottage, very narrow road with cars parked everywhere, Positives.. heating very efficient and comfortable bed. I suggest that the owners and Sykes are honest with us and say exactly what to expect at a holiday cottage. this the first time I have booked with Skyes and I was very disappointed with this cottage. For the amount of money we paid I expect better standards. I have been using holiday cottages for the past 15 years and am normally very happy with the cottages we have used in the past. Thank you.

Haworth was a beautiful place to stay and the location of the cottage was good.

The cottage itself wasn’t up to standard. First impression of outside looked scruffy, weeds and untidy baskets, broken gate and leaves/litter. All the windows were misted up/broken down and need replacing. Woodlice both dead and alive crawling in the property. Kitchen bin not emptied and floor not cleaned. Smell to the property like heavy smoker has lived there. All lights and skirting boards dusty/cobwebs. Bed wasn’t a king size as advertised, bedding all ok, bathroom ok…serviceable but ceiling needed cleaning and painting and the bedroom one also. Needs a good clean under all furniture which I would of done myself but only small hand held vacuum available to use. We made the best of the stay and out most of the day, didn’t cook in the kitchen, lucky with the weather so we were able to leave windows open. Wouldn’t return to this cottage, it’s the first time we have ever been disappointed with accommodation in over 30yrs! The locals made the holiday as all so friendly we would definitely return to this area.

Our second stay at this lovely property, Box Cottage is set in the perfect location of Oxenhope, with views of the hills from bedroom windows.

In good weather, we used the patio table at the front. (There is no back garden). Excellent dining pub up on the moor a 5 minute drive away, or you can walk to another for a drink just around the corner. 7 mile drive to Hebden Bridge or only 2 to Haworth, the cottage couldn't be better placed in this area. A great local shop just a 10 minute walk away (quite a steep hill on return) or slightly further to see the vintage railway station. At the cottage itself, the beds and bedlinen are superbly comfortable with a real luxury feel. Two bathrooms are a bonus. Wifi was reliable. TV adequate. Sofa not particularly comfortable but armchairs are fine. Our only slight quibble this time was that we needed to quickly buy £10 worth of basic household items for the kitchen as they weren't anywhere to be found, but this may have been an oversight, as it hadn't happened on our previous trip. The local shop has everything you might need, plus a great fresh bakery. We hope to return.

Simply superb holiday cottage located in a surprisingly quiet corner of the village.

Accomodation spotlessly clean with all you require for a break from the norm (although another baking tray would be helpful for some) Heating controllable and certainly adequate for us. If you are a keen walker - there is a fantastic array of footpaths directly from the door. We tried as many as we could fit in - visit every scrap of open access and you won't be disappointed - embrace the mud though as it is everywhere in March. Parking - not suitable for anything bigger than a SWB VW Transporter. It was a tight fit and this wasn't an issue as our van didn't need to move all week. Pubs - if you are a fan of decent beer look no further than the excellent Bay Horse in the village. We tried a few and this was the best by far. A real locals pub - no food that we witnessed on our several visits there. Highly recommended!
