What our customers say about their holidays

    • Malcolm - Verified booking

First of all I should say that we had a good holiday.

And, I should add that the property was clean, and reasonably well equipped. The location is amazing, and our host was very helpful and friendly. Most things worked well, and I would not like this to come across as a negative review, for it is not. However, there are some things that could have been better, as I will explain below. 1. We booked this accommodation because my elderly mother cannot manage steps. The downstairs bathroom and downstairs bedroom were necessary. However, what is not evident on the photographs, nor in the description, is that there are significant steps between the bedroom and the bathroom, the lounge and the bathroom, and from the parking area for the cars up to the path to the cottage. This made the situation very challenging for my mother. We had to bring one of the single beds into the lounge. 2. The mattress upstairs was lumpy, and uncomfortable and the bed squeaked loudly. I could not sleep on it. I had to take cushions from the downstairs sofa, lay them on the floor upstairs and sleep on the floor. 3. The Wi-Fi is woeful. It reminds us of the days of dial-up. It might as well not be there. Advertising it when it doesn't really work is not advisable. 4. The description should say, somewhere, that the mobile signal is highly variable. 5. The door from the lounge to the patio is very hard to lock and unlock. It has warped. I was the only person in our party of four who was strong enough to pull the door into the right position to lock and unlock it. 6. A few smaller issues: there is a teapot, but no tea strainer; we needed a brush for washing up; the blind in the upstairs bedroom was broken; As I mentioned earlier, most things worked well. The TV was fine, as were the iron and ironing board, shower, the cooker, the fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, crockery etc. All the best, Malcolm

We had a fantastic stay here.

Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The views are amazing and great for birdwatchers. We saw/heard about 15 species from the back garden and would probably be great for winter birdwatching too as this is a wetland area. You have a completely separate raised section of the family's larger garden and apart from their older son occasionally riding his bike we never saw anyone and there was virtually no noise from the other properties. The road at the front is barely noticeable in the back garden and quietens right down at night. The property is just steps away from The Solent across the road where you can walk along the sea wall into pretty Yarmouth. There are lots of footpaths near the property and we did a walk that runs parallel at a distance from the property around the woods. This leads you to the edge of Yarmouth and the lovely Off The Rails cafe and then along the estuary to the Red Lion at Freshwater. We also found the dinosaur footprint casts at Hanover Point. We would love to come back again to this area and the property.

I think the cottage was spacious and was in a lovely area.

Having said that there were issues with the accommodation. WiFi/internet was appalling one morning for 3 hours absolutely nothing, when it does work it’s very very slow , and in the downstairs bedroom doesn’t work at all. No signal whatsoever. Also in both bathrooms no windows or natural light, both dimly lit , it could do with a light above the sink mirror for shaving , also a heated mirror as it steams up if someone has showered before you . In fact lighting in general could be brighter . Always been happy with previous cottages with Sykes and the ones we’ve used would use again. But this one I wouldn’t unless things were improved. Regards the WiFi as we were leaving asked the people in the adjacent cottage Fisherman’s Cottage he also said very poor WiFi. On most things you would need in the kitchen it was well equipped . Everything you needed . I’m just being honest as you’ve asked me to give my review. We will use Sykes cottages again as I think you have some wonderful locations and properties.

      An Isle of Wight gem!

Wonderful property, superb location. Compton Grange definitely fitted the bill - offering everything we were looking for, and more. The views are excellent from every window and the rooms are filled with natural light. There is plenty of space in the house but it is still cosy. Our 3 year old grandson, on returning from a busy day out, said that he had 'missed his Isle of Wight home'. It does indeed feel home from home. It is perfectly situated for the beach, walks (from the property) and for exploring the island by car and bus (bus stops are by the beach car park). After an exhausting day, you can collapse into the very comfortable beds! Great for a multi-generational holiday. The 'welcome pack' was, well, very welcome. The oven could have been a little cleaner. We found the back door was difficult to lock/unlock. Communication was great when there was a problem with a faulty toilet flush. The matter was swiftly dealt with - thank you. This is definitely a property we'd like to return to.

On arrival we were surprised to find the access road to the property was a rough, downhill track.

I didn’t like driving down it in the car, my husband was on his motorbike, he is a very experienced motorcyclist but he felt the rough track down pretty treacherous. We felt that doing this a few times a day on our holiday wasn’t ideal and because there had been no mention of this in the cottage details we were somewhat frustrated because access does impact on our choices of accommodation. We did go into the cottage. That was also not as described. There wasn’t light flooding in, actually quite dark and dingy. At this point we decided we would find somewhere else to stay which we did and then messaged the owner on Wattsapp to let them know we weren’t going to stay at the cottage as planned. The message was brief and polite and I could see that it had been read but I got no acknowledgment from the owner. I find that quite rude really. We weren’t requesting any money back. Moving on, we had a lovely holiday elsewhere and I cannot recommend the Lobster Pot at all.
