What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ruth - Verified booking

I had my 75th birthday here with hubby, two daughters, one son-in-law and five teenage grandchildren.

The location is superb for surfing beaches a short drive away, King Arthur’s castle ruins and amazing new bridge. Etc. The house exceeded our expectations in many ways but in a couple of others didn’t. However the owner, who lives next door was always on hand to answer queries and more than ready to take on board our suggestions. We were only his second guests since he took it on and so was keen to hear any slight quibbles and to put them right for future guests. The info from Sykes about the house was a bit misleading with the Covid instructions. They said there would be no cushions on the sofas and that there would be no games, maps, books etc. All these things were there so we needn’t have brought our own. It also states that there is a beach 200 metres away! No there isn’t! The sea might be but not a useable beach. Also we assumed, wrongly, that as it is a big house it would have a reasonable size garden. So we brought a gazebo but there was nowhere to put it up. The outdoor space is tiny with the hot tub taking up half and a BBQ and two benches with small table the rest. So if you have a BBQ meal you really need a table and chairs to eat it at outside. The hot tub is a luxury but we felt a garden dining set would be more useful. Also there is nowhere outdoors to dry wet swimmers, towels or washing although an electric drier and clothes horse indoors is provided inside. A rack for wetsuits is outside the front with a hose which is handy. The house itself is very well appointed and tastefully decorated with no lack of seafaring themed ornaments and wall pictures. The kitchen fantastic for catering for large numbers and a very comfy lounge. All bathrooms are great with endless hot water for those after beach showers, even all going at once! The bed I was in did sag in the middle rather and gave me a backache for the first half an hour each morning but maybe my age had something to do with it. Matt the owner was so friendly and helpful that I don’t want to upset him but felt that these comments might help those people thinking of booking up at Trevena Lodge. Oh and the view from sitting on the loo in my en-suite was the best I have ever experienced! We managed to avoid the crowds to avoid the Covid and altogether we had a super holiday and I had a memorable birthday!

The Lodge was very roomy and bedding, towels were very clean and the beds were made up and welcoming.

This was the plus side. As a multi-generational family on holiday, I expect: 1. A washer dryer that is user friendly so that we can do our washing and make sure we can take it home clean and dry. This is what we are always prepared to pay extra for! The one in the Lodge definitely wasn’t! The manual in the Lodge did not refer the the appliance installed and on download sent to us by the owner required a technology degree to find out if we could use the dryer separately! We couldn’t apparently! 2. Not to find crumbs on the floor and grease on the hob! I don’t expect to have to resolve this myself. 3. Not to have to resolve the rinse aid light on the dishwasher before use! We went and bought some and I left the remainder of the bottle in the Lodge for someone else to benefit. 4. At least one shower to have a grab rail so that those less able have something to hold on to! 5. ALL of the heated towel rails should have been in full working order, not just ONE which could not be properly thermostatically controlled! 6. The shower doors should not be coming off the rails when you use the showers. I would like to say though that the local management company were very good and at least answer their phones very efficiently. Unfortunately the maintenance men sent were not able to resolve items 4, 5 and 6 above so those renting after us will have the same issues. Also, it is my understanding that under Covid-19 guidance all toys and books should have been removed from the Lodge. They were not.

Cherrytrees is a wonderful property in a great location.

The house has everything you could want for a relaxing comfortable stay. It is one of the best properties we have stayed in and the owners deserve credit for the refurbishment and thank them for sharing their property. There was however one issue we encountered and would like to feedback to the owners as the only negative during our week stay. Around and under the sofa area of the kitchen were three butt ends of roll ups, a plaster and lots of food crumbs. This was discovered when our 18 month old baby picked one from the floor and typically put it in her mouth. I can only assume those persons prior to our attendance were responsible as I just cannot believe that this could or should have been missed. The rest of the house, bedding and bath towels were clean and in good order and after this initial issue our stay was very enjoyable. I would note it is not clear from the documentation how much responsibility is put on the previous tenants to clean, what level, particularly during these COVID times and if the property is inspected again prior to the next occupants, therefore we made use of the cleaning services at an additional cost of £40 to spare anyone the cleanliness issue we encountered. Whilst down there a visit was made to the John Bray office to report the cleaning issues that we encountered and was advised that our comments would be passed on.

This was our 2nd stay at Cedar Lodge and we absolutely love it.

A peaceful, beautiful cosy cottage, and the large hot tub is a massive bonus. The kitchen has everything you need. Down to the little touches, like the little bathroom wash packs, and the kitchen pack with washing up liquid, scourer and dishwasher tablets. Along with all that was a lovely local food and drink hamper to enjoy. The only thing that was a bit disappointing, the place was a bit dusty, the main bedroom more than anything. I had to wipe the headboard down before we got into it. As we're the bedside units and some of the windowsills and skylights needed a bit of attention around the cottage. Other than the cottage was clean, the large fluffy towels were so nice, and plenty of them if you needed. The site itself is beautiful. The reception staff always polite and helpful. We ate in the restaurant a couple of times and had drinks in the bar. But hardly any staff around downstairs, sometimes we was kept waiting 10/15 mins to get a drink. The food in the restaurant was superb, and reasonably priced, would definitely go again. The spa area is just so relaxing and the pool is lovely and warm. We will definitely be returning again in the winter months.

      Very comfortable and spotlessly clean.

The games, especially pool and table-tennis, were much appreciated. Very well-equipped kitchen. Helpful and pleasant owners. Good for visiting lots of places, including Tintagel and St Nectan's Glen (both easy walking distance), Port Isaac, the Cornwall at War museum and Trerice. Can also recommend the Screech Owl Sanctuary. My caveats would be that we gave up on the hot tub; just couldn't get the fire to take. This was disappointing, because the tub was one of the main reasons we booked Badger's Sett. Also, the shower has very low pressure. I had to wash my hair in the kitchen sink, which was a right old palaver and isn't ideal. It's something to be aware of if, like me, you have long or thick hair! Lastly, and I think this was just unlucky, temperatures dropped while we were staying and I did feel cold some of the time, especially in the mornings. We were wary of trying to adjust the room thermostats because although the owners said it was OK, the notes ask guests not to..
