What our customers say about their holidays

We have holidayed many times in this area and chose this accomodation for its location and luxury.

The location did not disappoint - 20 min walk to Budle Bay and a good 45 mins walk into Bamburgh or a 5 min car journey. Views are spectalular from the top of the quarry & would thoroughly recommend. The accommodation, although at first glance looks impressive, upon closer inspection it is let down in several areas, which you would not expect at this end of the price range. On a positive note, the mattresses, pillows and duvets were gorgeously comfortable as were the sofas. The smart TV was great, which enabled us to use Netflix - a must for the kids! The hot tub was great (other than last morning) - more than big enough for a group of 8. Other than a pint of milk and 4 individual biscuits, there is no welcome pack. Although this is a "nice to have" this is something I have become used to in other holiday lets (all of which have been less expensive than this one). Some local produce, fruit, juice etc. would be a nice touch. This is something perhaps the owners could look into. Cleanliness is the main issue (also mentiontioned in earlier feedback posts). Cobwebs on windows & ceiling, crockery had to be washed before use, old pair of socks left in one of the top bunk beds under the mattress - not a nice find for the child in the lower bunk (!) In general the whole place needs a good clean. There is no mop or bucket which would be useful and the bedrooms would benefit from a dressing table. A shelf would also be useful in the bathrooms. The front door bell did ring several times for no reason which was a little frustrating. A wider range of cooking utensils is a must - one small frying pan for a group of 8 is not practical by any stretch of the imagination. Hot tub was "topped up" with cold water at 8am on the morning of departure, which made it impossible for anyone to have a "last dip" before the 10am detparture. We had a great holiday in one of our favourite areas despite the points raised above - the lodge is lovely, however couldn't help feeling disappointed.

The lodge was filthy, including the linen, towels and scatter cushions (some of which are actually on the beds).

The floor was dirty, and left the soles of feet/socks black. There are lot of cobwebs in the high ceilings. I had to clean the kitchen worktops before use as they were covered in a white substance. Some of the pans in the cupboard were also dirty. The windows are so dirty it's difficult to appreciate the views through them. There is also mould in the bathrooms. This is in addition to the unacceptable level of dust and grime found pretty much everywhere else. Added to this is the general state of repair of the lodge. The paintwork is very noticeably chipped/scuffed/dirty in all rooms. Some windows didn't open. The longer curtains were stained/mouldy at the bottom. Unfortunately there are no cup coasters, so trying to protect furniture is difficult, despite the strict instructions in the file. There was no welcome pack, in fact there wasn't even a single toilet roll in the whole lodge, but thankfully we had the foresight to bring some. We also had to find the black bin which had been abandoned at the other side of the park. The previous occupants appear to have used the recycling bin for general waste as a result. To say we are disappointed, especially with the price paid is an understatement. I contacted the owner with the issues and photographic evidence, and requested some form of compensation for the time and effort it took to clean the lodge and launder the towels/linen. As you can imagine this was met with silence. Spend your money elsewhere. Holiday ruined.

Cowslip lodge was situated in a perfect position, furnished out very nice, lovely furniture, beautiful views, nice accessories and a very sunny position all day, we were happy with the above comments.

However the main thing that let this lodge down for us was the hygiene / cleanliness, very bad in the bathroom and shower and toilets, mould and stains. These can be rectified with a thorough cleaning. There were stains on the single duvet and hairs. I spent a full afternoon cleaning the lodge, but not the mould areas just a spray. We would be more than happy to book this lodge again, if the cleanliness and hygiene is rectified. The response from the property owner was first class and a very nice person. Please rectify this for the next guests as it is important for such a lovely lodge. Dryden company very polite and quick with their response, nice gentlemen that came out to the lodge. We were offered a cleaner to come out to the lodge but this would have been too disturbing for our guests. The lodge would benefit greatly with a gate for dogs as other dogs wander in and spoil it , this is an important fixture for a dog friendly lodge. Other dogs wander around the lodge and leave their mess which we had to clear. We had a lovely time in Cowslip and we would gladly return should the above issues be rectified as I wouldnt want to come away and clean whilst on holiday. More relaxing with a gate for the dogs and to keep others out. Thank you to the owner of this fantastic lodge, who will be proud to own Cowslip

The grocery welcome pack was a nice and ‘welcome’ surprise.

Hot tub well heated and accessible. Property was clean and tidy inside. However the property in need of some TLC (we had a constant dripping tap in kitchen-not able to be repaired during our stay, despite reporting on arrival, however owner did explain reason for this). Outside of the property needs a bit of a spruce up (lots of cobwebs and general wear & tear, gutter constantly dripping over bifold doors & not able to open bifold doors as they were extremely stiff- we are use to opening them as have them at home!). Lots of dead insects/daddy long legs between shutters/windows in bedroom. Outdoor furniture cushions wet and not able to be used as cover used but not secured & no ability to store cushions inside. Extremely hot and provision of a fan/fans would have been extremely welcome in the heat as the lodge is like a greenhouse with lots of glass. Not able to access outside bins (shed locked with 2 padlocks and no keys provided). Not able to operate TVs in any bedroom & no instructions provided in information pack. Visitor information pack out of date… I.e. states property let by ‘crabtree&crabtree’ not ‘Sykes cottages’, recommends a restaurant in Bamburgh (Mizen Head Hotel) that has been shut down for well over 18 months! Hot tub operational info doesn’t relate to the hot tub in situ.
