On our first visit to The Old Garage a year ago, we arrived to find a stylish property, clearly well maintained and with a generous welcome pack awaiting us.
Based largely on that pleasant experience, we booked to stay there again, but oh, what a difference a year can make! This time, there was no welcome pack at all. For the first time in 30 years of cottage holidays, there was not even a pint of milk in the fridge. Evidence of lack of proper maintenance soon followed. All the saucepans were covered in a brown grease and several items of cutlery were the found to have dried bits of food still on them. We therefore spent the first hour of our holiday cleaning all the cooking utensils. A precautionary wipe of table surfaces revealed they had also not been cleaned properly, and it later became evident that the floors were the same. After a long and tiring journey, all you want to do is sit down with a nice cup of tea and biscuit, not to have to roll your sleeves up to do the ownerâs work for them. What do we pay for, after all? There were numerous further observations which included mould on several window frames, stains on cushions when they were turned over, decking rotting in places and the garden clearly overdue for some TLC. We later brought this to the attention of Lyme Bay Holidays who informed us that the property had changed hands since our first visit and the new owner had brought a different approach to its management. Lyme Bay Holidays offered to send a cleaning team in immediately, but by that time, we had settled in and did not want the upheaval this would create. We advised that in our opinion, the property was in need of a deep clean all round. We can only hope the new owner realises that you cannot trade on stylish looking images alone. There are plenty of other properties about whose owners understand the importance of cleanliness and of providing a welcome pack. Need we say more?

Lovely property.
The pictures in the listing donât do it justice. Itâs a lot larger than expected. Quite quirky. Fabulous sea views. Nice seating area with a shelter which was ideal for shade and would also be good in light showers. Well stocked with everything needed. Especially in the kitchen. Nice welcome bag with some essentials. The property does have Wi-Fi. The listing suggested both it did and didnât so probably needs updating. Good location. Short walk to the centre. A couple of small supermarkets nearby. Close to the Town Mill which is worth exploring. We didnât appreciate how hilly Lyme is. My husband struggled to walk back as heâs injured his leg, but buses were regular and stopped nearby. Only slight negatives. Weâd have liked more towels as one medium and one towel per person wasnât ideal. Especially as we also needed hand towels for the en-suite and bathroom. As per other reviews many of the items in the kitchen could do with a wash. We put all the items weâd use in the dishwasher on arrival. The kitchen trays etc were also filthy as was the hidden drawer and oven gloves under the cooker. We washed the trays etc but left the gloves as weâd taken our own. The wall cupboards with plates and cups smelt, as mentioned in a previous review. We left the doors open to air but it didnât help. We plumped up the cushions on the sofa and it was quite dirty under the cushions. Otherwise the property was clean. There were issues from the neighbouring property the first weekend. We wondered if the property was a rental, but fortunately the occupants were only there over the weekend. Key collection and drop off was easy and the office wasnât far from the property. Weâd be happy to stay again.

It's a nice property, excellent facilities, good parking, great location for exploring Lyme Regis.
Description is accurate, directions to the property are clear. We would stay here again. Some detailed feedback for the owner... The hallway cupboard door doesn't close. This is very annoying as you're walking past it all the time. The blankets over the sofas are coarse and could be replaced with something a bit softer/nicer. There was a "wet dog" smell on arrival that took us a couple of days to pin down - it's the living room curtains. Not sure when they were washed last, or if they were hung back up wet and have gone a bit fusty. I'd be tempted to replace them. They are also quite difficult to close without pulling them quite hard, and sooner or later someone will tear them. It's hard to reach the middle ones without climbing around the table so something with a pull cord at the side would be a good investment. An oval table would give better /easier access to the wooden seats at the back and might make the room feel a bit bigger. The kick board under the fridge looks like it has been kicked and could do with some minor maintenance. Controls for the towel rail and the underfloor heating in the bathroom are complicated (even with the instructions) and a lot of people won't be able to fathom them out and just won't bother, which is a shame. Tenants might be happier with just an on/off button. One of the control panels is a bit loose. Excellent labelling of sockets and switches. Electric car charging points over the road are a benefit that a lot of people are looking for and should be called out in the listing.

Can't fault the property itself at all.
Our party genuinely enjoyed our stay in a well maintained, clean, comfortable, secure (property itself plus parking) and well appointed "penthouse" apartment. The views down into Lyme Bay from the Lounge/Dining area were pretty spectacular too. On the other side of the coin, won't be booking anything through Sykes Cottages again. Initial email contact went OK and a deposit was made. From that point onward dealing with Sykes was abysmal. There were automated email responses to questions that didn't address the issue. Finding phone contact numbers for Sykes was a challenge. Once made, on more than one occasion, phone hold times were in excess of 20 minutes. When phone contact was achieved, undertakings to return calls weren't followed up - generating yet more calls/lengthy wait times. The only positive (apart from the property stay itself) about dealing with Sykes occurred when we arrived at Wessex House (across the road from the property) to pick up keys and move in. The Lyme Bay Holiday Rentals Management Team at Wessex House couldn't have been more willing to help, right throughout our month long stay. During our extended stay in the UK we've rented 3 properties through 3 companies. Sykes, you are by far the cellar dwellers.

We very much enjoyed our time in Lyme Regis.
We booked this accommodation on the basis of the "perfect" listing. This was very misleading based on other accommodations we have stayed in. The flat itself was very nice. But the floorboards meant we were terrified of disturbing anyone in the flat below. It is an older property and perhaps this cannot be avoided, but it was disappointing. The glasses (when we found them) were in a older cupboard that was difficult for me to deal with. I chose a "perfect" listing because I have serious issues about hygiene and sanitation. The glasses were smeared and all had to go through the dishwasher before use, and the cupboard was not one that could easily be wiped out and cleaned. I would not recommend this flat to dog owners. Taking a dog out for a pee involved stairs, a busy road and no garden or park area easily accessible. There is a wooded area to the rear of the property but out dog was for some reason terrified of it! We were relieved as it avoided lots of mud! The flat is recommended for quite families without a dog. Facilities are fine - but don't expect that perfection offered!
