What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lesa - Verified booking

The cottage had a terrible smell in the lounge which got worse when the window in the lounge was closed.

Although we had a dog with us the lounge made all our party feel really itchy and especially if we sat on the sofas. The carpet in the lounge was covered in dog hair as my socks were covered in hair. Carpet not tbest in a house suitable for 2 dogs. Very small kitchen, not the best accessories available either and not full sets of crockery. The gate to the bottom of the stairs was a very unusual feature!! There’s no photos of this on the listing, I wonder why?? The gate has a polite notice that dogs are not allowed upstairs. I don’t think this a necessary feature. Large bedrooms, fitted wardrobes has basic shelving inside there was an extension to the top of the dressing table? En-suite in main bedroom, the shower was grubby. The house was dated, decorated very basic, which wouldn’t be a problem if it was clean. There was no way we could have spent any quality time in the house, especially the lounge as mentioned above. We stayed at the property for one night and then came home on the Sunday. None of my family wanted to stay there. We have used the company for many years and this is the worst property we have stayed in. It wasn’t cheap, and I will not allow my family to stay in sub standard properly when you don’t feel comfortable with the surroundings. I did ring heart of the lakes to advise that we had left the property after one night and was told to make a complaint, no information was taken from me. I do not recommend this property at all and the owner needs to spend money to upgrade as there are far better properties in the same street which put it to shame.

Although we are regular visitors to Grasmere and have stayed at other cottages or hotels, this was our first visit to Field Foot Cottage.

We chose this cottage because we had our dog with us on this occasion. The cottage is not easy to find as it is hidden away in a side lane by the Lakes Art Shop near the Co-Op store. It is, however, central and in a quiet location. As other reviewers have said, there is a covered parking space for 1 car behind the cottage, but the space is tight and it takes some manouvering to get the car in. The cottage itself met all our needs. The kitchen is a reasonable size with good facilities; excellent range of utensils, effective cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. The living room is small but cosy and with good maps / books for local walks. We used the bedroom in the attic conversion with a large space, comfortable bed and good en suite. However, the staircase from the first floor to the attic conversion was steep and may be an issue for those less certain on their feet. The central heating was effective, although we often had to override the programmed temperatures. We were disappointed that there was no handwash provided and only one toilet roll per bathroom. Fortunately, we had brought our own which was just as well as the Co-Op store had run out of stocks in the current climate. Also, we were unable to find an Information Booklet in the property. This meant that we got to use the central heating, cooker, washing machine and dishwasher through trial and error which is not ideal. Also although not an issue for us, first time visitors to Grasmere would appreciate information / recommendations on local restaurants / tea rooms etc Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return again

A fantastic base for exploring the Lakes, and for all the walking around Ambleside.

Ambleside is a lovely place to stay, with a real walkers buzz about the place. Lots of walking/outdoor activity related shops, then gift shops, cafe's, mini supermarkets, and takeaway places. Multiple pubs to choose from too. The house was comfortable, and suited us well. The separate utility room was really useful for laundry and all the wet weather gear. Plenty of space for us. The outside space is small, but is fully enclosed for dogs. You can sit outside on a table and chairs, but it's cosy, and doesn't get much sun. The kitchen is quite small, limited surface space for preparing food, but there is a large dinning table in the open plan dinning room joining the kitchen so that can be used. I'd say the kitchen is adequate for preparing simple meals, but not a 3 course dinner with lots of plates and pans! Parking is free with a provided disc. But we forgot to put the disk on for just 30 mins and got a ticket, so beware! Beds comfy, linens all clean and fresh and place felt clean. Plenty of TVs if that's your thing! The ensuite shower room - the shower is a bit aged, could do with a new shower tray at some point so it looks fresh. I think the place is managed by a central agency, so there wasn't that personal touch of a pint of milk, biscuits/cake on arrival, fresh flowers, that some other places have. If I was coming back to Ambleside I'd stay again. It's a brilliant central location for Ambleside, so you can walk to shops, restaurants and pubs etc in less than 2 mins. Thanks for our stay.

We very much enjoyed our holiday in the Lake District, staying at Low Brow Barn.

The cottage is very well appointed and the owner has really thought about everything you might need. Furnishing and beds are comfortable, the lounge is spacious and the TV reception excellent. The underfloor heating is effective in the bathroom and bedrooms, less so in the lounge with its high ceiling. The kitchen lacks cupboards for groceries but has everything you need for cooking etc. We parked in the adjacent lay-by on the main road, the traffic noise wasn't a problem but you have to be careful crossing the road. There is not much of a view from the cottage windows, however, it is very well placed for the major sights and the towns and villages to visit in the area. Highlights of the week included exploring Ambleside and Keswick, visiting the Puzzle Museum and Castlerigg Stone Circle in Keswick, a combined boat trip from Bowness to Lakeside and then to the Lakeland Motor Museum (great cafe!) and a ride on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway ( a bit of a trek but worth it) and nearby Muncaster Castle with its magnificent gardens. Blessed with mainly fine weather we absolutely loved the Lake District and Low Brow Barn.
