What our customers say about their holidays

    • Julia - Verified booking

We had a very disappointing stay at Rose Cottage.

The property itself has fabulous potential, lovely size and location. Access is very narrow but we knew this from previous reviews. The main issue was how dirty and run down the property was. There were also safety issues with low windows with no child lock restrictions ( when we arrived windows were wide open and low level and we were not warned and children had gone upstairs to find their bedrooms) also every window has blinds with no safety latches for the cords. Not acceptable for a cottage advertised as for families. When we got to the property and started to unpack we noticed stains on carpets, stains on the table cloth and sticky patches, crumbs etc on counter, mould and hairs in bathroom, stains in bath, dust in all cupboards etc. I then checked the bedding and found hairs, bits and even what appeared to be dog biscuits inside a pillowcase in second bedroom! Did not feel the bedding was clean or the cottage. In order to try and enjoy our holiday and how late it was now getting we bought all new bedding and cleaning products from Tesco as well as throws for sofa (dirty and musty smelling) as well as an air freshener as there was particularly unpleasant smell upstairs. Upon returning home we contacted the owner as we were aware they used a cleaner and caretaker to look after the cottage to make them aware and advise they should visit to see how bad it is. They were very dismissive and simply said it was a shame we had not advised them whilst staying. We did not contact whilst on holiday as their cleaner was clearly not up to the job and the issues were not minor and easily resolved. Furthermore we did not wish to waste our holiday waiting in for caretakers or cleaners and would not leave our possessions without us there. Why should we be penalised for their negligence? I emailed the owner a second time and never got a response. Also the backdoor is broken (does not open) and there is a dangerous shaver socket below the sink in main bathroom. Overall would not return and would not recommend until owner resolves safety issues and gives a deep clean.

We were rather disappointed with this cottage.

We always look for remote places which are not over-looked. It wasn’t made clear on your listing that it had another barn next to it and that the property opposite looked directly into the barn. We felt that there was no privacy and that we were unable to open the blinds in the living room. We would have thought that there would have been a blind over the window that looks directly into the bathroom? Again the privacy angle for us is important. Whilst the general cleanliness and decor was immaculate, we were shocked to find that when we removed the bedding at the end of our stay (as we always do regardless of whether it is requested), we had been sleeping on heavily stained protectors which is a first for us. Also some of the cutlery was dirty. There were basics missing from the kitchen such as a frying pan, Prosecco/champagne glasses and whisky tumblers, lap trays, small kitchen knives and so on, which are always provided in other properties we’ve stayed in. We also had a problem getting Wi-Fi, which was virtually non existent and also meant that the smart TV was useless as it worked on the Wi-Fi. There was satellite free view but no BBC. We wanted to let you know about this and since there were two phone numbers (separated by only 1 digit) in your information pack, we rang both numbers and left messages. One person rang back and said that we had a wrong number and we had no response from the other at all. We didn’t know who lived in the house opposite and didn’t feel that it was appropriate to knock on doors so we had no Wi-fi for the entire 4 days. Generally we found the property to be very basic. Not what we were expecting and not what we are used to.

A beautiful located annexed property set in a tranquil setting.

The hosts were very welcoming and nothing seemed beyond their willingness to accommodate us if we so needed. This property is joined to the hosts home, however it didn't feel intrusive at all and the hosts were very respectful of our privacy. It is secluded with its own entrance and opening doors on to the patio area, where you can sit in privacy admiring the beautiful garden or listen to the birds. No traffic! The cottage is beautifully decorated, clean and guidelines outlining the Covid-19 are adhered too. We went out everyday visiting local places such as Chard, Bridport ,Lyme Regis ,Crewkerne and Ilminster. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around these clean towns and visiting the many lovely shops, antique or emporiums. The cottage is well equipped so cooking lovely evening meals was home from home. Wifi good, I had to have a zoom and telephone conference call and there was no issues. We look forward to returning here as soon as we can.

We did leave some comments in the book provided.

Overall the cottage is lovely, we used the garden which was very peaceful, lovely parasol to shelter from the sun, a wonderful little summer house which again, we did use. However, the negative comments were re the downstairs shower room, it was very slippery when emerging from the shower, a grab rail really is a necessity. Also, there was not a potato masher or slotted slicer (for getting fried eggs out of the frying pan). These two things were only minor but annoying that the were not there. The only other "niggle" was that the bedroom lamps were too dim to read by, we had to keep the main lights on whilst we read. We met Henny the host twice, very nice lady who provided fresh milk which was delicious and also some complimentary home made brownies. Henny also makes her own sausage rolls and pasties, we ordered some of her pasties, they were delicious. Overall, we would recommend Ammerham Farm Cottage.

Lovely cottage; really comfortable and plenty of towels available and lots of information on the area.

We spent a great few days here and would be happy to return. However a couple of points to note - the key box is really difficult to open and after a 10 hour journey, in the dark & rain, it took us 20 minutes to access the key, which was not a great start to the visit. The outside light did not help as it was only on for a very short time and was blocked when trying to open the key box. Vehicle access is very, very tight, especially if arriving in the dark. It was fine one we had done it a few times and the advice to come in from the top road is really important. Overall, the cottage is deceptively large and had everything we needed. We would certainly stay here again, knowing it has everything we need and more and that is is really cosy, comfortable and very quiet.
