We were disappointed by the condition of this holiday property which was described on Vbro.com as being dog friendly and having a 'courtyard, providing the perfect spot to eat alfresco'. The courtyard was covered in weeds, moss, and dirt, unlike the beautiful, landscaped garden belonging to the owner's property. The front door to the cottage was heavily scratched and the window frames were filthy. The last thing we wanted to do was 'eat alfresco' in this area. There was no mention on Vbro.com of the matter of dogs not being allowed upstairs. This wasn't mentioned until a deposit had been paid and the information became available on the Exmoor website. When we arrived at the property and viewed the stairs, we became very concerned as there was no stairgate in place to prevent our spaniel or beagle from using them. The staircase is very steep, uncarpeted, and too dangerous for dogs to go up and down. The leather pouffe and sofa in the lounge were heavily scratched by dogs who had previously stayed at the cottage. The cushion on the wicker chair in the kitchen was heavily stained. The freezer was choc-a-bloc with ice so we had to throw our frozen food away as there wasn't anywhere to store it. The doors were grimy above and below the handles. The 'decorative shell' in the bathroom was covered in dirt/dust. The bottom of the shower curtain was moldy and there were cobwebs on most of the ceilings. When we arrived home, we received an email from the owners advising that they had 'Just been into the cottage fearing the worst (you having said that "when we arrived there were scratch marks all over the furniture") and I couldn't see any at all. In fact, no problems anywhere! Even the scratch marks on the inside of the front door (which I agreed were there before you'd arrived) looked better. I wonder if you might have painted it? If so thank you very much.' We did not paint anything. In fact, we tried to vacuum before we left but the vacuum was full to bursting and absolutely reeked.

Located just far enough outside Porlock to seem more rural, but close enough to take a brisk stroll into the village. Surrounded by so many amazing walks and a short drive from Exmoor and all it’s glory. The property is approached through exquisite gardens and adjacent to the beautiful main house. The private, enclosed courtyard is perfect for sunny drinks and al fresco meals - with sufficient shade for the dog. And the scent of that jasmine……..glorious! A big bonus for us is the enclosed private orchard out at the back, that the dog can run in. It is an amazing space and testament to the hard work that has lovingly been put into it. The cottage is the perfect mix of period features and modern facilities. Quirky and cosy in equal measure - light, airy and spacious but SO comfortable. A good night’s sleep is guaranteed and the view from the bedroom window in the morning is spectacular. A personal welcome from the owner was lovely and his good wishes on departure were very kind. In short - perfect, peaceful and the most exquisite escape. Definitely not to be missed.

We have stayed in various places in Porlock over the years, and have always had worries about car parking and access. No such worries at Coachmans Cottage. It is also a wonderful location for dog owners, with a secure front court yard, and the use of a large securely fenced orchard at the rear of the property. Lovely views all round. A short walk up through the orchard, onto the bridleway leading to Porlock in one direction, Porlock Weir in the other. The cottage itself is well equipped ( vacuum and ironing board in bedroom cupboard, took us a while to spot those !), warm and very comfortable, excellent wifi and very nice smart TV, interesting selection of books on local area, some written by our host. Small freezer compartment in fridge. The stairs are steep and would not suit someone with mobility issues, especially if they needed to use the bathroom in the night time. David is the ideal host, friendly, always on hand if needed, but not intrusive. This was our second visit, we have already booked again for next year, says it all, really.

We just keep coming back. A perfect location just outside of Porlock. Quiet, relaxing and with lovely views. A pleasant 10 mins walk through the woods into lovely Porlock, with a nice selection of pubs, cafes and local shops. Highly recommend the Top Ship, one of the best real ale pubs in Britain! A stunningly beautiful 1/2 hour walk along Porlock Marsh in the other direction to Porlock Weir, where you can swim in the sea. So many beautiful walks straight from the cottage that we didn’t use the car all week. The cottage is a simple accommodation for two people, with everything you need for self catering. The king size bed is wonderful and the lounge so comfortable. There is a private courtyard with tables & chairs as well as access to the amazing orchard with it’s apple trees, wildflowers and bees. David is a great host, and a super friendly and interesting guy. It was lovely to see him again. The perfect place to just relax.

The view from the cottage windows is lovely and from the top of the orchard in the early morning is simply sensational. The cottage has every facility required and is thoughtfully set up to make a self catering, walking holiday in wet weather, with two dogs both relaxing and comfortable. We were warm, had gallons of hot water and drying out our wet clothing didn't cause us any stress. There is a hose to wash down dirty feet at the front door and a really practical entrance hall with masses of hooks to take clothing, dog leads, towels etc. The owners are just next door but not at all intrusive. Very welcoming and clearly passionate about their lovely house, gardens and orchard. We had a guided tour and came home inspired to enlarge our borders in our own garden and to plant an apple tree. We would love to go back.
