What our customers say about their holidays

    • Colin - Verified booking

Dear Annie One of the main reasons for booking April Cottage in Coverack was because it had an ensuite walk-in shower.

This was an important requirement because of my wife’s mobility problems. On first attempt to use the shower the day after our arrival, the shower head was found to be leaning on the wall and upon first adjustment, the holding bracket fell apart. This was nothing to do with any mishandling on our behalf and it was simply not fit for purpose from the start of our visit and invalidated using the shower. Fortunately, there was another shower in the family bathroom that we had to use instead. I contacted the owner and informed him of the problem, and he seemed apologetic and grateful of the information. He then told me that scaffolding would be erected during our stay to do some work on the chimney. I was surprised that this was not mentioned when we initially booked the property. We had to leave a day early because of a domestic situation at home but the inconvenience of the scaffolding erection meant that we had to leave two days early. Furthermore, the mirror in the ensuite shower room was missing, although the brackets were still there. I trust the owner is not blaming us for that as well! So, imagine my indignant surprise on receipt of your email about the owner claiming that the property was left in in a poor state of repair. It was in POOR REPAIR when we arrived. Please do not attempt to deduct any money from my account because of a poorly maintained property. I appreciate Sykes Cottages is a professional company and that you will relay this conversation back to the owner. Sincerely Colin Threadgill PS: The dead & dying tulips on our arrival together with the non-functioning DVD player didn’t raise our hopes on day 1 but we refrained from putting any derogatory comments in the visitor’s book as a show of good will. RE: 4K52U-23-EN I trust this message finds you well. Following the notification from the property owner and claims of the property left in a poor state of repair on your departure. It appears some damage has been caused to the shower head that was only recently replaced. Due to these events, we will be deducting from the the good housekeeping bond. We have authorisation to take the above payment as per your booking terms and conditions: “4.12.2 Payment deducted by us: we will tell you during the Booking process that we will hold the payment details you used to make your Booking in order to collect the ‘good housekeeping bond’ via this payment method (if appropriate) and you authorise us to take this payment. If the payment details you have used to make your Booking have expired or cannot be used by us to collect the ‘good housekeeping bond’, then we shall contact you to arrange immediate payment of the bond from you. If you cancel the payment method provided to us for this purpose you must immediately provide us with an alternative payment method and authority for us to use it. The Owner must, within 7 days of the end of the relevant Holiday Period, notify us if they wish to claim all or part of the bond from you. If the Owner fails to notify us within this period then we will not collect any payment from you. If we do collect all any part of the bond, we will notify you in writing of the reasons for doing so. We have no control over whether the Owner instructs us to collect any part of the bond on their behalf..” If you have any queries, please call the number below Kind regards, Annie The Customer Relations Team Sykes Cottages 01244 345700

April Cottage is such a lovely place to stay, in the best location.

We loved being in the heart of the village and being so close to the amenities. We were disappointed with a few aspects of our stay. There were no toilet rolls in either bathroom when we arrived late in the evening. In addition, there was a dishwasher with no dishwasher tablets, no soap by sinks (only an inch or so of washing up liquid), etc. I mentioned this to the housekeeper and she kindly brought two loo rolls the next day, which she said the cleaner had forgotten to put out. If we'd have been told to bring these items, we would have, though for the price of the rental we would expect these basics to be provided at least for the first couple of days. There were two specific issues on arrival: the ensuite bathroom off the master bedroom had a shower hose that was broken and simply propped up in the stand. It collapsed on my elderly mother-in-law when she tried it on day 1. The housekeeper came on day 2 and said she would get someone round to fix it, but alas no-one arrived and the shower in that bathroom was unusable for our stay. In addition, there was a dirty puddle of water - so thick it was almost oily - by the woodburner that our dog stepped in on arrival. The housekeeper said it was probably left by the cleaner, and kindly cleaned it up when she came to look at the shower. We took pictures of these things as soon as we noticed them to show how we found the property at the start of the holiday. We would hope a few of these things could be improved for future guests. A couple of other things worth mentioning: it took us about an hour to figure out which codes got the wifi working as there were different ones noted on the visitor book and in the file, so I annotated the notes so future guests would find it easier. The instructions for working the DVD/video weren't clear to us so we missed out on that. Overall, though, we enjoyed our week and look forward to returning to Coverack next year. Thank you!

My first words when entering the The Barn was “wow”.

Stunning and the decor was right up our street. It was all done to a high spec. It was myself, husband and three-year-old son stayed here for a week. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners Sharon & Dave. We had requested a stair gate to be fitted to keep our little munchkin safe during night wandering! Dave fitted it for us the night we arrived which was much appreciated. We had some little welcome goodies of milk, eggs and homemade lemon cake, which was greatly received by all of us. It was a home from home space and our little one certainly made himself at home . Everything you need in the kitchen if not more than you need. It was excellent. The washing machine and dishwasher was a godsend also. The barn was super comfortable, the bathroom was beautiful and beds were fantastic as I always dread going away and worrying about the mattress being uncomfortable. We have had some horrific ones in our time . But no problems here. Lovely little courtyard garden which was needed with a little one who wanted to be outside all the time. I was able to lock the gate and no he was safe. It is situated in a very quiet area, it is a single track road to and from cottage, supermarkets were about 20 minutes drive away. But Coverack itself was a lovely little village and was a short distance down a very steep hill, We only visited it once whilst we were waiting for our cottage to be ready, we had a walk on the beach. But it has a little shop which we found was quite expensive,Fish and chip shop and pub. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay we use the barn as our base but visited many of the well known attractions such as Lands end, penzance, Marazion, Saint Ives, Newquay, Healys cyder farm, Porthleven (fantastic fish & chip shop) Kynance cove we highly recommend, what a beautiful spot. Thank you so much to Sharon and Dave we hope to be back one day.

Great property + great location = great holiday.

The three adults plus two small dogs in our party all have a great time here. Seaview was spotlessly clean on our arrival and had some nice personalised touches that we appreciated. We found the kitchen/dining area a little "compact" but it wasn't a problem as we worked around this easily enough and anyway, it was more than compensated for by the large and comfortable lounge. The bedrooms were well furnished, comfortable and had a good storage space. Worth mentioning that the kitchen was particularly well equipped with all manner of pots, pans, casseroles, knives, dishes etc. There were even two different kinds of vegetable peeler! The nominated parking spaces were a bonus too. Located at the end of a private road, Seaview was quiet yet had amazing panoramic views of the sea that were captivating whether sunny or stormy. It's 50m above sea level so there's a bit of a climb back up from Coverack itself or the small (and almost private) Porthbeer Cove with its mixture rocky/sandy beach. Its only 700m (not the mile quoted in the Sykes listing) by footpath to the lovely Coverack harbour with the excellent (if somewhat pricey) Lifeboat chippie and Paris Hotel. Good coast path walks in both directions right from the door. We toured the area a bit. We enjoyed Loe Bar and Porthleven in rough weather – these can be accessed from car parks in the north of Loe Bar or the NT Penrose Estate. The Spingo beer at the Blue Anchor in Helston was as good as I remember it from 40 years ago and the walk around Lizard Point excellent and sparsely populated once you got 200m from the car parks! Note that Seaview's location is nowhere near that indicated on the Sykes mapping. Exceeded expectations.

We loved the cottage, the decor, the facilities: that big bath downstairs, good kitchen, shower, telly, garden, fairly close to the sea, well insulated, but having extra heaters, the whole feel of the place!

A couple of little niggles: the washing machine smelled of fungi - I did a hot wash in it after, so hopefully sorted, might need a wash with some vinegary water. The drying machine came in handy after a rainy day! What is nothing to do with the cottage: narrow roads, often single, so a bit stressful driving, but mostly ok, but drivers to be aware. Would be useful to have some more information about: local shops, how to turn on the hot water for the bath (that it needs about an hour, otherwise switch in cupboard by washing machine), we figured out everything else. Tv worked well, and loved the safe and big garden (needs mulching and feeding with organic matter in the autumn, but lovely). Extra bonus to have a freezer as well (we left a frozen chips behind for somebody :D), and left a couple of blue, white and gold plates (they are old, but hope could be used in the decorations). Didn't dare to touch the nice Willeroy Bochs ones, but loved looking at them, the others were great to use and pretty, the whole place has a lovely atmosphere. We were very lucky to have had it for a better price, apart from the long journey from the Midlands, would love to be back someday. Also a great base for visiting several lovely places around. Thank you!!!
