What our customers say about their holidays

    • Alice - Verified booking

Overall we had a lovely stay, though there were a few issues.

The mill is lovely, spacious and the garden is wonderful and nicely maintained- our dog enjoyed the extensive outdoor space (and pond!). The space is not fenced and is shared with two other cottages which are in close proximity, but this worked for us as our dog is very laid back! The cottage was a bit dusty in places, and there were a few hairs in the bathroom sink and floor when we arrived, the rest of the cottage was clean, comfortably furnished, and warm. The location is great, the mill is very peaceful but only a few minutes away from Penzance and all of the shops and services there, and is close to loads of interesting day trip locations and National Trust sites. On our second to last day, the water went off- absolutely no fault of the owner who informed us in the evening. This did mean no toilets and no fresh drinking water, the only water we had was what was left in the hot water tank in the property which we had to use to manually fill the cistern so we could use the toilet. As we had been told of the issue late Sunday, we were also not able to buy water to use as we waited for an update. We did reach out to Sykes to see if there were any other cottages available, should the owners not be able to resolve the issue however thankfully it was fixed by lunchtime the following day. Although not their fault, it would have been useful to know about the issue earlier so we could have bought water or found alternative accommodation. The owner dropped off one large bottle of water the following morning of the issue and then offered us the use of the toilet in an empty holiday cottage across the courtyard after Sykes had been contacted, however it would have been better to offer this on the evening the water went out when it was clear it would not be fixed quickly, as it would have saved us an unpleasant night without any facilities! Overall we had a good stay, however the water issue did put a damper on the last 2 days.

As seasoned travelers and at that age to know better, it was somewhat a deflating moment in all honesty.

The price was high and the amenities were somewhat lacking. My first encounter with the owner was also disappointing as our holiday property boasted of a BBQ and a hot tub. Well the BBQ was just the basic brick built effort with a metal grill for which you could place a throw away BBQ set that you would have to purchase. Jokingly I said to the owner what about yours which was the top of the range gas BBQ, and the face said it all. It didn't end there either. The double bed was soft and clearly seen better days, as for the pull out settee that was in the living room was a newish leather settee, that was fixed, and was rock hard, with very little give. The shower room was a little run down and could have done with a spruce up, but it was adequate. My snag list would be. Attention to detail and it would start in the shower room which looked a little run down the ventilation was poor and the shower unit wasn't that user friend to operate. In the kitchen and living area, it was super compact and had limited workspace to use in preparing food. Whilst we all understand that no place will ever tick every box, this place for us was below what we have experienced anywhere else, and that is saying something. The patio was cramp, and the hot tub cover wasn't easy to operate without the need of a second person. A tip would be to offer a small child's fishing net to clear out all the dead flies as a hot tub seems to be a magnet for them. Air Con would be a positive step in the right direction for these people to up their game, but other than that we were relieved to leave early, than our departure date. I do wish them well, but retrospectively, they do need to remember that holiday makers still want the creature comforts of home too. Regards Denis Brown

      Clean as a whistle.

Lovely friendly helpful owners with nice doggies of their own that are also friendly! I loved that Dawn had horses too, in particular the white one that liked to neigh to you as a hello! Private use of the garden was great, just a few steps from the private courtyard. All dog safe. Dawn got us some garden chairs and put them in the garden because you do get the sun in there. Our dog loved it because it’s was long enough for a ball throwing session. Loads of parking. Supermarkets plenty a short drive away and the Co op walking distance. Had dinner at The Coach And Horses a couple of times. Recommend. Went into Newlyn about 3 times. Good fish and chips cooked to order and also the visit he Mackerel Sky fish bistro..... no bookings taken you just turn up. Hot tub was used every day and always hot. (It’s does make a humming sound in the night but we ignored that). Shower room a good size with strong shower and heated towel rail you can turn on if needed. Kitchen equipped enough and has a dishwasher but we tend to was up by hand.....old habits die hard, lol. Bed was comfortable enough for us if a bit small. Other half is quite a big guy. Not heavy just broad. All locals we spoke to were friendly and recommended walks. Weather wasn’t that good but we had a relaxing break. Even if weather not great it’s still good to be in the 38 degree bubbles. Thanks Ian and Dawn xx

Beautifully renovated mill building converted to three bedroom accommodation.

The living area is open plan, bright and airy, Ideal for socialising as a family, and adequately equipped for a self catering holiday. The bedrooms were as described, clean and fresh. A blind over the small window in the double bed room would be a good addition but we were able to improvise satisfactorily.. The gardens are huge with a lovely little lake which, when we visited, had waterlilies in bloom and damsel flies flitting about. There are places to sit and contemplate or read or just chat. The location is down a private road near a small stream and is very peaceful. The host was very welcoming ( Cream tea! thank you!) on arrival , showed us around and was available if we needed anything but left us to ourselves otherwise which was perfect. I am sure if there had been a problem he would have been on it straight away. The location is ideal for visiting some lovely little coves for swimming or surfing or for walks along the South West Coast path. There are gardens at Trewidden and Tanglewood which are worth a visit and others which we didn't have time to get to. Mousehole is quant. The Minack isn't far but book in advance of your stay. Only had a week , had a lovely time and wish we had had longer. Thank you.

This cottage was perfect for 2 people.

Due to the current COVID crisis it was a bit noisy and echoed a lot, we could hear our neighbours opening and closing doors, so they could surely hear us too - but this is purely down to the lack of soft furnishing, such as rugs, cushions etc which would have made a big difference I feel sure. Spotlessly clean, warm (with heatng for autumnal mornings) as well as amazing daylight as the sun came round to the french doors, nearby pub with great food at St Buryan, if you do not want to use the cooker & microwave. Pre Book at the St Buryan Inn Pictures of the interior were very accurate and there was plenty of space and storage. DVD player in the TV, which was handy at times, as atmospherics (sea mist at a guess) made the signal a bit wobbly on occasion. Very Welcome Cream Tea on arrival plus some milk and tea/coffee provision The down side? Washing Machine, but only a rack for drying, which tended to blow away when placed on the patio - though it was late season, so perhaps breezier than normal, or you have to put on the heating and place it in front of the radiator. Therefrore a washer/drier combo woud be welcome for any keen beach goers - which we were - faced with damp cossies and towels every day.
