Moray is in the north east of Scotland, with a coastline on the Moray Firth. Known as “the land of natural contrasts”, Moray features the Cairngorm Mountains, rugged coastline and bustling town centres. The region spreads from the coastline on the north down to the National Park with the River Spey flowing through it – starting at the mountains and joining the sea at Spey Bay. Moray is whisky country; with over half of the country’s malt distilleries found in Speyside. What our customers say about their holidays

    • Saskia - Verified booking

Dookers Hoose is a characterful and charming seaside retreat and was the perfect location for our family holiday.

The house feels very welcoming and has a creative ambiance with artwork by the owner and family decorating the walls, a mix of vintage and modern furniture, books, games and window ledges decorated with seashore finds. This feels more of a home than just a holiday let, situated in Cullen Sea Town with its soft colourful walls, pantiles and tiny gardens at every turn. We loved being able to hear the sea from the house. We enjoyed cooking in the stylish and well-appointed kitchen and were very pleased to find so much space for storing supplies as well as an efficient washing machine. The layout of the ground floor makes it a very sociable space and on cooler evenings, we enjoyed the electric ‘wood burning’ stove which created a cosy atmosphere. We brought some solar powered fairy lights with us for added twinkle. The internet was consistently reliable and we did not for one moment miss having a TV. The little table in the front room was a perfect spot for drawing, painting and writing. We brought bikes, body boards and wetsuits and were delighted to have access to the garage for storage as well as clothes lines which made drying wet kit easy. In front of the garage and opposite the front of the house across a narrow, quiet side road is the small outdoor garden space with a picnic table. This was a lovely sunny spot to sit with morning coffee and a book watching the world go by. Just across the shore road lies the sea wall with steps down to a lovely stretch of sandy beach which is perfect for safe swimming and provides access to long walks along the shore. The steps on the sea side of the wall are a great place to sit with a drink and enjoy the huge skies and stunning sunsets. On your return from a swim, you can enter the little back yard through a gate and access the conveniently placed bathroom with shower. There are lovely coastal walks (or runs) from the house and we saw dolphins on several occasions from paths scented with bracken and wild thyme. The surrounding countryside is beautiful by bike and car, and there are many interesting places to visit. Supplies can be found in Cullen itself where there is a reasonably stocked Co-op and we noticed a deli opening soon. There is an amazing fresh fish shop in nearby Buckie and you may catch your own sea trout from the pier if the seals don’t get there first! If you prefer not to cook your own, the fish and chips in Cullen are consistently good. Any queries during our stay were answered quickly and the visitor’s book is brimming with information on local eateries and places of interest logged by the owners and visitors over the years. A lovely stay and we were sad to leave.

First the pros: the cottage itself was clean and tidy.

It was certainly large enough for the four of us, all adults. It was decorated very nicely. The views were lovely. It was perfectly situated to allow tours of distilleries and the cooperage and Walkers cookie outlet. Cons: There wasn’t so much as a tea bag for us when we arrived. We are used to having at least a few provisions for the first morning in a place because we can’t be expected to come with food after just flying in for 10 hours. But there was nothing. We drove to several places in town hoping to get some dinner but everywhere was booked solid. We ended up driving to Elgin when a google search told us there was a grocery store there and we ate at a restaurant there. It was after 9:00 when we finally had something to eat. The tv didn’t work for our entire stay. With some pretty nasty weather on a few days we were stuck in the cottage with no tv and no instructions were left to explain how to make it work. Speaking of instructions , there were NO instructions of any kind for anything, except detailed instructions for how to clean up and leave the cottage when we left. We stumbled through the use of the washing machine, and we were told not to use the dryer portion of the machine and we were advised we could hang the clothes outside on the line but we only had one full day without rain and that day had gale force winds; we couldn’t get the radiator in the kitchen/dining room to come on (kind of chilly in the morning); the towels were in shreds and were so stiff they were uncomfortable to use; the beds were hard. Usually I don’t care about the softness or firmness of the beds because I can pretty much sleep on anything but these beds were HARD. It’s disappointing that our stay was challenging and we felt like we were not terribly important. I think with a bit of attention to the outlined problems this could be a really nice place to rent.

Jane was a wonderful host; she was there to welcome us even though we were running late.

The welcome saw us being introduced to our very clean and massive pod for our stay. Jane explained how to use everything and what was required. We absolutely recommend a long stay here. Wish we could have stayed longer than the two days. Smart toilet seat - google Japanese toilet - bed that massages you to sleep; turns itself off. Milk, cream buns and Prosecco in the fridge along with fresh bread and local biscuits from Walkers biscuit factory just down the road. A grand boxed selection of fruit teas and coffee pods for the machine Clean and compact. Really no need to take an oven glove or extras like Sykes recommended as were not required. I did needed to buy sauce at the local shops - 5 minute drive or there about - for our fry up but I bet you even as I type Jane is on the case. It was a home from home experience. Then the amazing swimming pool come hot tub! This was main reason I chose Jane’s retreat but it was so much more than we expected. For folk that need swim training take a holiday here; you can thank me later! The wet room is large and so easy to use before and after the hot tub. Moss of Bourach is about 1/2 mile from Ben Rinnes Distillery and from the public carpark there you can join a path so you can walk up Ben Rinnes. Jane has a booklet includes information regarding the workings of equipment and has taken her time to make sure there is local info and safety regs sorted in her booklet. With the views and sunsets this is a place we will return to, with its wonderful host too. Thank you Jane. Your hard work will we are sure will pay off - oh we even enjoyed our stomp through the bog woods right next door!

We take cottage/log cabin holidays 2 to 3 times a year more often in Scotland.

We’ve not had a bad holiday yet but we have to say this is a stand out experience. We’ve never had such a great welcome before, being diligently shown around the property by the owner Jane who explained all the amazing equipment including Alexa controlled lights and heating and the huge hot tub/pool. We used it every night even in the rain as it covered within the barn which doesn’t obscure your view outside. Jane provided us with a lovely local lemon drizzle cake, an ice cold bottle of Prosecco and a fresh baked loaf amongst other things in the welcome pack. She even topped us up with coffee machine pods. During our stay we were afforded complete privacy and Jane was always on hand for any advice about the property and local area. We normally travel in a group of four to six family or friends but this was a rare excursion as a couple for which this property and local area was ideal. Would highly recommend for couples and we certainly look forward to visiting again as a couple. Well done Jane and thanks for a fantastic holiday. Karen & John.

Really feel the online information does not do this property justice.

Having said that, the added extras - such as boiling water tap and Japanese toilet - were additional welcome surprises. The starter pack of local produce - including fresh bakers bread and the best carrot cake ever tasted (sadly the local baker had none left when we visited to buy some on our departure day), along with Walkers shortbread etc etc - was most appreciated after an 8hr journey due to road closures, the satnav apparently losing signal going through the Cairngorms and other factors. Hope to book soon to return next year. Jane has truly, in our opinion, found her vocation in life, she is the best host balancing interaction with privacy. The family pets were an added bonus for us (although kept at distance if disliked), and the multiple deer sightings within the grounds and on approach were amazing. The pool just speaks for itself - brilliant to have our own personal pool truly at our disposal for that week. It was all we hoped it would be and more! Tranquil, secluded surroundings made for a very relaxing week!
