What our customers say about their holidays

    • Saskia - Verified booking

Dookers Hoose is a characterful and charming seaside retreat and was the perfect location for our family holiday.

The house feels very welcoming and has a creative ambiance with artwork by the owner and family decorating the walls, a mix of vintage and modern furniture, books, games and window ledges decorated with seashore finds. This feels more of a home than just a holiday let, situated in Cullen Sea Town with its soft colourful walls, pantiles and tiny gardens at every turn. We loved being able to hear the sea from the house. We enjoyed cooking in the stylish and well-appointed kitchen and were very pleased to find so much space for storing supplies as well as an efficient washing machine. The layout of the ground floor makes it a very sociable space and on cooler evenings, we enjoyed the electric ‘wood burning’ stove which created a cosy atmosphere. We brought some solar powered fairy lights with us for added twinkle. The internet was consistently reliable and we did not for one moment miss having a TV. The little table in the front room was a perfect spot for drawing, painting and writing. We brought bikes, body boards and wetsuits and were delighted to have access to the garage for storage as well as clothes lines which made drying wet kit easy. In front of the garage and opposite the front of the house across a narrow, quiet side road is the small outdoor garden space with a picnic table. This was a lovely sunny spot to sit with morning coffee and a book watching the world go by. Just across the shore road lies the sea wall with steps down to a lovely stretch of sandy beach which is perfect for safe swimming and provides access to long walks along the shore. The steps on the sea side of the wall are a great place to sit with a drink and enjoy the huge skies and stunning sunsets. On your return from a swim, you can enter the little back yard through a gate and access the conveniently placed bathroom with shower. There are lovely coastal walks (or runs) from the house and we saw dolphins on several occasions from paths scented with bracken and wild thyme. The surrounding countryside is beautiful by bike and car, and there are many interesting places to visit. Supplies can be found in Cullen itself where there is a reasonably stocked Co-op and we noticed a deli opening soon. There is an amazing fresh fish shop in nearby Buckie and you may catch your own sea trout from the pier if the seals don’t get there first! If you prefer not to cook your own, the fish and chips in Cullen are consistently good. Any queries during our stay were answered quickly and the visitor’s book is brimming with information on local eateries and places of interest logged by the owners and visitors over the years. A lovely stay and we were sad to leave.

      Not good value for money.

Arrived to a pile of rubbish in the garden and a used poo bag by the gate . Rubbish very kindly removed by a neighbour. No bin provided. Contact numbers provided on my paperwork were useless, no answering machine on landline and mobile number was a lady who was an ex cleaner who told me bins had been requested on numerous occasions to no avail. No welcome pack, the cleaning was what I would call "a lick and a promise" . A stained towel was left out for use and previous visitors food was left in the cupboard. Bedding was clean but well worn and "bobbly". The hoover was jammed full of muck which I couldn't fully remove. There was only one smoke detector in the property and no heat sensor, not sure if this meets current safety standards Did eventually speak to the owner and £50 was reimbursed but she seemed to think this mess was an acceptable situation for visitors to arrive too. The lady and her husband who removed the bags of rubbish and bottles were very kind and went out of there way for me, I can't praise them enough. The much needed holiday was not ruined but , spoilt for me. I was down to visit friends and attend a hospital appointments so, the added stress was far from welcome. All in all no real effort or thought gone into making this a welcoming place, will definitely not go back. I tried to contact Sykes on the Monday by email and kept being told my booking reference was incorrect. I too have cleaned a holiday let and the one I worked in had to be cleaned top to bottom and all basic essentials such as milk and tea, coffee, and sugar were left along with cake and biscuits. All bedding and towels had to be perfect or they were not used.

Great flat as you described, beautiful place in a beautiful setting however enable us to have an extremely relaxing enjoyable stay, however I do have two negatives.

1-During our stay we experienced cold high winds, the flat is an open living area with kitchen, dining and living area in the same space. The cold high winds caused a very strong draft to come through the extractor fan resulting in a very cold living space, boosting the heating was not sufficient enough to counteract the draft. 2-My wife and I work hard and save our money to enable us to take a holiday and get away from the stresses, strains and chores of everyday life. I received an email from you the day before our holiday was over directing that we remove all bedding, sheets, pillow cases duvet covers etc and place them in the bath. I did complete the tasks you asked (after getting grief from my wife) but I am not happy about this. Surely you employ a cleaner who comes in after guests leave to ensure the flat is clean and ready for the next guests, is that not why check out is at 10 and check in at 5? I do take a holiday expecting to do the job of a cleaner or anyone else.

The booking process itself through Sykes was extremely easy, quick and user-friendly.

A comprehensive confirmation was sent to us including several details from the owners. Details of location, parking and key pickups was also provided making the arrival at the cottage very straightforward. The cottage itself was immaculate and the welcome basket was indeed very welcoming! It even included treats for our dogs! Beds were comfortable and warm with lots of wardrobe and drawer space if required. Kitchen and bathroom were both spotless and had plenty of storage. Our only niggle was the shower. The pressure was very poor and we both had to use it as a hand spray. The temperature was good though and I don’t know if perhaps we didn’t use it properly. Would suggest perhaps that it is checked out anyway. I have chosen not to mark the cottage down because of the shower though because in every other way it was perfect and I highly recommend. Thank you very much ❤️

This is a lovely modern cottage.

The furniture is modern with clean lines and has been thoughtfully decorated. However , is only big enough for 2 even though it states in the description that it’s big enough for 4. The bed was a bit uncomfortable, this could really do with replacing. The description is a bit misleading- the cottage is very close to the sea, but you are not able to walk on the beach because it is mainly rocks. However, a 10 minute walk brings you to a sandy/rocky beach you can walk on. I you can easily get to other areas by car. We went to Loch Ness but unfortunately didn’t see Nessy. Although parking is on a first come first served basis, we didn’t have any problems finding a space. It is on a narrow street, and you do tend to bump into the neighbours as you are coming and going, but they are very friendly (and love dogs). The welcome hamper was lovely, and appreciated by both humans and dogs ❤️
