What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

This was a spacious property ideally placed for exploring Northumberland and so an excellent base for visiting the sites.

The beds were comfortable, the house was clean and there were a decent range of facilities so great for self-catering. Some lovely views from the main bedroom and en-suite. First impressions of the house on arrival weren't good though. The entrance area was untidy and needed a good clean. The garden was sadly neglected and didn't match the website picture at all. The patio was dirty and need a good jet-wash and there were weeds everywhere. The two doormats to the patio were filthy. The patio parasol was very old and worn. Garden pots and planters were full of weeds with broken and tatty window boxes at the front. The lawn was in bad shape and clearly needed attention. It should be pointed out that a public footpath runs alongside the garden too - we note that this has been omitted. The portable rotary washing drier for the garden had no ground spike so we had to improvise and use the parasol base with two garden chairs propped up against it to stop it from moving. There was no visible hole to place the drier into. We were surprised at the number of windows in the house that were missing their handles. Some had just one handle and some were difficult to open and close. We reported a handle that snapped on use and the front door yale lock that didn't work very well. We were only given one set of keys (normally you get a spare) and fortunately we had the back door key which enabled us to get in the house. The internal window frames all needed a really good clean as they were dirty as were the windows. The Crew Room was something we wanted to use but didn't get the full benefit of as there were no instructions left for how to use the X-box and TV. Our biggest disappointment was that the bed linen, towels, soap and loo roll were not changed and replenished after our first week. We stayed for 2 weeks and expected a normal changeover day for our second week. This is the only property we have stayed where this has happened so clearly not up to standard. We were able to use towels from other rooms but the bed linen should have been changed Fri-Fri. We enjoyed Northumberland but we felt the house was a disappointment. It felt unloved and uncared for with no attention to detail and didn't live up to the webpage blurb and photos. We paid a lot of money for our 2 week stay but didn't feel we got what we paid for. This was a house in need of some TLC and needs investment and far better maintenance. Overall, this was probably once a nice family home but it didn't feel particularly welcoming or homely.

This is a great property and is really well positioned in the lovely seaside town - for the shops and for the marina.

There are 2 small supermarkets within 2 mins walk in either direction and a bigger one a few mins drive away The property is well equipped for the average family with good storage for coats / boots downstairs and good drawer / wardrobe space upstairs. There were also dog treats and a dog dish for visitors. The property was spotless and had all of the basics that you’d need upon arrival (milk / coffee / sugar / juice etc as well as washing up liquid / tea towels / bath towels etc) Communication from the owners was the most proactive and helpful that I have had from any owners and was much appreciated (although having spent a week in amble for the last 2 years we didn’t need to call upon them). There is also a very useful folder with details of the WiFi etc and a box full of leaflets for things to do in the area. Amble is the best base we have used for Northumberland - you seem to be able to get anywhere quickly and without issue. The only niggle was the noise outside - it wasn’t bad at all - but on 2 consecutive mornings I was woken by the bin / refuse wagon (to be fair I did have the window open). Really handy to have a grassy area right next to the house for the early morning / late night dog walk (but if going in winter months please take a torch !) Loved it and I would definitely recommend it.

There can be few better places to spend a week before 12 weeks 'self isolation' than at 'The Steadings'.

A fine cottage based on a working farm at the historic 'Tosson Tower' site. Outstanding views over the Coquet Valley, Rothbury and towards the Cheviot Hills. Very close to Tosson Tower is the Simonside Forestry Walking Area.[ Although the single track road to get to the visitor parking areas is a bit grim for low slung saloon cars] Nearby attractions include Cragside and Wallington Hall NT Properties. The scenery of the magnificent Northumberland Coastal Region including Bamburgh, Seahouses etc is about 40 to 60mins drive away via Alnwick with the Castle and its historic connections. The cottage itself is some two miles or so from Rothbury with its shops and other amenities. The cottage and its owners were very 'dog friendly' and walks starting from the cottage itself supported our canine friend. The secure garden was also a definite plus! The cottage itself was warm, well equipped and a delight to return to after a hectic outdoor day. If there is any slightly negative comment, which did not in anyway affect our party of two, is that with only one shower a full six person party would lead to some morning queuing. The cottage itself is extremely spacious with good wi-fi. Overall a delightful cottage holiday in a turbulent week.

Absolutely loved our stay at The Steadings, booked for 6, however only 3 of us went.

We had so much space, we went for New Year for a week as we arrived the Christmas lights outside looked so pretty on entering it felt so warm and cosy as the Christmas decorations were up with the fairy lights on the tree & around the beams, while unpacking Ann knocked to greet us & told us to knock at the farmhouse if we had any problems, however, we did not need to, Beds comfy, shower good, white goods worked well, new sofa's which were comfy & looked better than ones in photos, our bulldog Vinnie enjoyed the large enclosed garden, we used garage door of (games room) to enter garden which had fantastic views to front & side of property also from bedroom windows there was a beautiful garden with a pond & fountain although belongs to B&B. We used the games room every night our nephew had so much fun, however, it was cold at this time of year, we just wore our coats & boots. I would love to see games room renovated with heating & flooring to flow with comfort of this fab property. We enjoyed chocolate brownies and a bottle of milk in a glass bottle obviously produce from the farm, an added extra touch. Well done. Deborah from Gateshead

Lovely cottage, well maintained, very clean , I believe recently renovated to good standard.

Beds very comfy, bathroom tastefully decorated, with sufficient towels, etc Kitchen appliances all brand new, cooker easy to use, perhaps a steamer to use, would save on cooking things individually, plus help with electric, no cleaning products to use if you have a disaster, extra bags for rubbish, plus no recycling properly yet in your area, which has nothing to do with cottage, just environment. Situated in lovely area, marina at bottom of street, with plenty of shops on your doorstep if needed, plus market on Sunday in harbour which was very busy. Plenty of walks round about, and other areas to visit of interest, would definitely come again, only problem for our group, as I brought a friend who has mobility problems, using the stairs for toilet and bed was difficult, again something I should have thought of before I came, but would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone for a break in Northumberland, plus thank you for lovely welcome pack on arrival from Janet, Alan and Diane
