What our customers say about their holidays

    • Madeleine - Verified booking

Positives are that the lodge has a very spacious living/kitchen/dining area.

However, outdoor space was not clean. Decking was dirty and unswept, not cleaned before arrival. Seating could do with being replaced as picnic bench is tatty. Photo on website shows decking in its “new” state which does not reflect the reality. I contacted the maintenance manager via phone who was very pleasant and apologetic about this and advised he would come the following morning to remedy. He also said he would bring a bottle of Prosecco - a very nice gesture! However, the next day I didn’t feel the clean was thorough (was done whilst out) as the decking was still very dirty beneath the table. Sadly no bottle of Prosecco either, so unsure why that was ever promised! I also rang Sykes to advise the state of the twin beds was not acceptable. The mattress on one is fit for nothing but the skip - it’s clearly broken as it’s sunken and you can feel the springs. It’s fortunate my child was ok to sleep on this as I certainly wouldn’t have been. Neither of the beds had mattress protectors which is basic hygiene practice that I would expect in any rental. The sheets were also threadbare and did not fit the mattresses properly. I was advised that the man coming for the decking would also remedy this issue. The sheets were replaced but were still too small. I can see a comment from 2021 which states that mattress protectors are needed and a mattress replacing, which has been responded to as being addressed by the owners, but clearly has not been. This is quite disappointing. In terms of the rest of the accommodation, I would suggest not mentioning that there are games and books - there are no books and two games, one with no instructions. Folder of information was falling apart and could do with being replaced and refreshed. All in all this location is fine as a base, however I would not stay in this accommodation again.

We had a lovely time at Little Jack's at Honnicombe Manor.

It is a very well presented little cottage that was very clean and had most things we could want. It was clean, comfortable and well maintained set in a nice location and had easy access to most of the activities on the site. There is a fairly decent internet connection in the cottage although it did slow at peak times of the day and with 3 of us using it (better than most holiday cottages I've been to though). There were unfortunate limitations on accessing things like the swimming pool and gym as well as the games room being closed, but this was due to Covid 19 restrictions which were unavoidable. You had to book to use either pool and the gym as well as having to prebook to go into the restaurant. The location is great with a restaurant/pub on site as well as a small shop. A big Tesco is only 3 miles away and another supermarket in the opposite direction not much further than that. There are a few sites of interest such as Cotehele manor and activity centres such as Tamar Trails within a couple of miles and good driving links to most of Cornwall and Devon. I recommend you go and have a wander to the top of nearby Kitt Hill for a look around. For the mandatory cornish pasties there is a small factory shop in nearby Callington for 'Over the top pasties' that has recently won awards and was absolutely delicious. The only slight criticisms I would make, and these are 'slight'; We could have done with a spare set of towels for us all and a wok to do easy one pot family meals. The water pressure isn't always amazing, but was always good enough and we had no issues with water temperature or the water going off which is mentioned in other reviews.

      A very tired holiday camp.

The centre of the camp is derelict just a mass of foundations. No mention was made of the horrendous bone jarring speed bumps, there are 7 to cross to get to the property. There was only a club house dilapidated and no atmosphere. One drink there was enough for us. The entrance to the property is almost blocked by bushes. On entering there was the immediate smell of damp. This is not mentioned anywhere and as an Asthmatic not welcome when looking at the ceilings it is obvious where the damp Mark's have been attempted to be cleaned. The welcome book is the worst I have ever seen. We could not operate the oven and eventually found instructions in a cupboard. The no stick pans need throwing they can not be used as the not stick is peeling and would be in your food. This is a health and safety matter. There was no mention of lots of required items being hidden under the beds. The window next to the microwave is broken. I had to scramble through the bushes to push the window closed whilst my wife secured it from the inside. I do not understand why you expect guests to be your quality assurance? It is also a managed property so you do not get the touchy feely of the owners making this special for you. This is also not highlighted. I all a tired run down site and a tired run down property. I doubt you will publish this on you website as it is to close to the truth. A very disappointing holiday completely misrepresented by yourselves.

A great location for accessing Padstow, Wadebridge and an hour from St Ives.

Please note if you are a family, that currently there is no restaurant or indoor leisure facilities at Atlantic Bay, as the former building is due to be redeveloped, albeit no activity has started. There was a small temporary marquee set up for people to use. The chalet is clean, and very simply furnished, throws hiding tired and faded furniture; so would benefit from a refresh which could be done quite cheaply. A few cushions on the sofa for comfort, replace the broken tv unit, and some outside seating would be a welcome addition. It’s one of only a few chalets that has a really pretty garden and we were able to park in the space directly behind the chalet which was great. The decking is starting to rot in places and the handle on the main door is loose and key is rusty, so get a new key cut. The pictures show a tv in the double bedroom, but there isn’t one. This is our 4th time booking through Sykes and each time we have arrived to find some tea, coffee and milk at least, but nothing this time, Not our best experience, sadly.

We had an excellent holiday in Hazel Lodge.

Jill and her family were very welcoming and friendly. They were always there for any questions/queries we had, they were full of information as to where to visit or shop etc. We didn't need for anything as everything was provided in the lodge, all we needed was our clothes, which was brilliant. Our stay was extremely peaceful and relaxing with lots of space around us. The lodge was very spaceous with great views. The location was ideal as it was central to visit all of Cornwall. I would highly recommend these lodges and would definately come and stay again. Thank you Jill and your family and a special thank you for our lovely scones when we arrived and an extra pint of milk in the fridge, fresh flowers on the table, which lasted our 2 weeks, also chocolates as a thank you when we left - these little touches make a great holiday and fantastic host. So thank you, we had a lovely time and really didn't want to leave the lodge, it was that lovely. Andie and Tony
