What our customers say about their holidays

    • Tanya - Verified booking

Honestly? We actually really liked the place.

It was large and spacious, lots of room for the 5 of us. It's well equipped, and the owners have obviously put quite a lot of hard work into making the place a nice and welcoming base from which to explore Filey and it's surrounding area. However... What let it down? Cleanliness. Whoever is cleaning the property was obviously rushing through and simply cleaning easily seen areas so that first impressions are positive. Look a little deeper though and that changes. I really don't want to spend the first hour of my holiday cleaning and bleaching the toilets. Lifting the lid to find 'dirt' marks and hairs meant i wasn't going to let my family use the bathrooms until they were cleaned to a good standard. It just went downhill from there, with the fridge having crumbs and marks in (all easily cleaned off by us), one of the freezer drawers was full of unwrapped sausages and burgers obviously left from a previous group, and an opened bag of ice, all of which we had to throw out ourselves along with cleaning the drawers so we could use it for our own food. The kitchen hadn't been properly wiped down, the microwave, oven and bin obviously just given a quick wipe over and there were crumbs at the back of the kitchen-sides and under the glass chopping boards/around the sink. In the living room we only had to sit on one sofa to be given a perfect view under the opposite sofa of thick dust and crumbs. Non of the above was 'searched out' by us, just easily viewed areas that should be obvious to someone cleaning a place. The bannister was wiped but sticky. I didn't dare move any furniture, beds, etc as I dread to think what it would have been like underneath things. That said, my husband told me on the way home at the end of our week, that he checked all rooms to make sure we hadn't left anything and found a soiled thong behind the bed my son had been using. I guess that will still be there as I very much doubt the cleaners ever look so it could have been there months! On our last day, while loading the car, my husband was approached by someone we assume was one of the cleaners, and asked if he was staying at No.1 and could we strip the beds and bring all the washing downstairs for them as they 'can't park for long so it saves us time' - I suppose that explains the lack of proper cleaning... Unfortunately in addition to this the beds were very hard, like sleeping on a board, with the pillows being very cheap and flat so giving very little comfort. I appreciate bedding is a very personal preference, but a little comfort on holiday would have been nice. Such a shame as it's obvious the owners really care about the place. We love Filey and have been coming for a long time. Sadly we won't be back here.

Just got back home from a week in this lovely apartment.

Perfectly sized for the 2 of us and our 2 dogs. Everything we needed for a holiday stay was provided and even the sun shone for most of the week which helps of course. Clifftop walks and a beautiful beach on site meant we didnt always have to drive to find somewhere to while away the time. Evening walks were fun as the dogs encountered the bunnies which came out as the sun set. Also recommended, especially for dog owners, Filey Brig Country Park, and Scarborough North Bay. Parking around most of the area was so easy using the PayGo app. Except for Scarborough South Bay parking meters which all seemed to have no internet connection. This made it impossible to use the app or even to pay by card. While that did leave lots of parking spaces empty, just make sure you have some of that old metal currency for those. Regarding "facilities" at The Bay, this was outside the control of the owner or the rental agency and it was the one thing that really let the whole site down. The Bay kitchen was closed and had been for some time but still appears on "The Bay" website as open. This meant the only onsite catering facility is the John Paul Jones pub. And that is in a league of its own as far as poor catering is concerned. You cannot blame the front of house staff who are all, without exception most professional. The problem here is one of lax and disinterested management which goes back from the local manager right up to the resort owners. First time we ate here I was served a miserly piece of chicken which was poorly cooked, to the point it was dry, tasteless and almost impossible to cut. It was as if it had a protective skin on it. That was served on a bed of tinned tomato along with a grey, bland, sauteed small potato. Absolutely no point in saying anything to the manager if in fact one was on duty, nor the cook. Neither of who check the quality of food leaving their kitchen. This was not a one off as I saw other guests also sawing away at their meal. The final straw came when we decided to return for their advertised Sunday roast. Only to be told, we dont do that any more and haven't for about 6 months. So why is it still advertised on the parent company website? It is in fact one huge stain on an otherwise lovely holiday site and accomodation.

The apartment was in a good location, close to amenities and beach.

It was exactly as advertised and we were happy with it, on the whole. The bay it’s self it’s fantastic with a gorgeous dog friendly beach 10 minutes walk away. Positives: Dog friendly Close to amenities As described WiFi worked well Nice views of courtyard from bedroom windows Negatives: There was a couple of areas which we felt let down the property, for example there was only around a quarter of a toilet roll in the bathroom, with no additional rolls provide. Firstly we didn’t feel this was hygienic (From a COVID perspective) as it was obviously left by the previous occupants who would have touched it, and it’s not as though it could have been sanitised afterwards. It was also inconvenient as there is no shop onsite. Also, there was only about 2 ‘squirts’ worth of liquid soap in the bathroom. Again this isn’t great especially at the moment when we’re all so keen to wash hands more often. We did pack hand sanitizer so it wasn’t a massive issue but again, it’s just the details that make you wonder what else has been missed. The fridge was extremely noisy, it seems like the fan isn’t working correctly and there was a constant and fairly loud hum. We were only there for 2 nights so didn’t bother us too much, but it probably would be annoying if staying for longer. We would definitely return to the bay, but we’d likely chose a different property next time around.

The holiday started on a bad not as after a long tiring journey the reception on the site told us we weren’t entitled to the leisure pass we’d been promised.

After a few conversations and contact with Sykes we eventually got the pass which we used everyday. The flat was well equipped for a short stay and was a stones throw from the leisure centre and pub which was very handy. The furniture and bed was very comfortable and we slept well for the whole week. Our little Frenchy Leo loved the area and enjoyed his many walks to the lovely nearby beach. Another problem in the flat was that the dining table was too wobbly to use but again a quick phone call and this was sorted within a couple of days. We enjoy touring the area and visited the three local resorts of Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough. We found parking a bit of a pain as some car parks are cash only or an app called Ringo which we didn’t have and trying to load it on 4g was a pain. If you like pies we highly recommend the local dog friendly Piebald Inn which is a real ale pub and has a massive range of pies to choose from but make sure you are hungry as the portions are very large. All in all we had a lovely time at Sunny Bay which we highly recommend as we would definitely book it again.

The apartment was well equipped, spacious for a couple.

The bathroom was good and the hot water was great. The cleanliness of apartment could have been better, lots of dust and the communal hallway had a musty smell. Although there was a notice in the apartment saying extra cleaning had been in place due to covid-19 and the remote controls, hairdryer etc had been sterilise and placed in plastic bags they had not! We brought our own bedding and towels, the bed was not very comfortable but we expected that. The juliet balcony was nice for the late afternoon sun however the occupants below often had a cigarette at their outside table so this filled our bedroom with cigarette smoke. The site was very good, the pub was just across the road, we did use the pub a couple of times but we did not like how many dogs there was in the dining area, people feeding them at the table! We saw one cock its leg on the wall and nobody bothered but we are not dog people. We thought that the apartment was OK but was expensive and the cleanliness let it down, the site was good and it's an ideal base to explore the Yorkshire coast. We would go again but would do more research.
