What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mrs Lynda Gunn - Verified booking

The Great Eskcape is a lovely apartment, very clean and with very pretty views over the river. However, a few things didn't go to plan. 1. We booked this apartment because of the 10am checkout, when we received the arrival instructions the time had changed to 9am, very unfair to change the time after taking our money! We wouldn’t have booked the apartment had the checkout time been advertised as 9am. 2. The arrival instructions need updating, we would suggest they say "On arrival go to the Bin Cupboard to the right of the parking space and enter the code ‘C259’ to open the locked cupboard, once inside you will find the keys in the key box with the large X on the front. Pull down the front cover and enter the code ‘2012’ to open the key box". We arrived at 5.30pm in the dark and couldn’t get into the bin cupboard because it was locked, I checked the text message I had been sent the day before by the agents and it only mentions code 2012. I telephoned Ingrid’s Flute the agents and my call went to voicemail. Luckily for us one of the residents of Holt’s Court came home from work whilst I was trying to call the office and opened the cupboard for us to retrieve the keys. When I went into the Ingrid’s Flute office on Monday, 13th February the woman in the office kept saying that someone was on call until 8pm on the night of our arrival, they might well have been but they weren’t answering the phone. We are not the only people to have problems accessing the key box, there are comments in the visitors’ book in the flat about this problem, the owners obviously don’t read the comments. 3. There are two televisions in the flat but only one can be used at a time. When the TV in the living room is being used it takes the signal away from the TV in the bedroom and that cannot be used, and vice versa. Although we are on holiday and out during the day it is quite nice to come home and watch some TV before bed, again it was one of the reasons we booked this flat as a lot of places only have one TV. 4. The kettle was leaking water from the glass panel on the front, very dangerous. I mentioned this when I went into the office and was told that it was nothing to do with the office as the apartment is owner managed and to look in the instruction book in the flat. This I did only to find that book does not give a phone number for the owner only an e-mail address. We don’t have access to e-mail when we are on holiday, we only take a pay as you go mobile with us that doesn’t have internet access. Yes, I could have phoned or gone back to Ingrid’s Flute but we were on holiday and by that point getting fed up of all the problems so we used a saucepan to boil water to make hot drinks during out holiday, not good enough. Would we book this apartment again – no, nor would we use Ingrid’s Flute as an agent. When I went into the office the man on reception could not find the apartment on the system and actually asked me if I was sure it was one of their properties, not very professional. We try to visit Whitby at least once a year as we love the town and surrounding area. We have never had any problems in previous years with the other apartments or agents we have used.

This is a lovely apartment in a great location. Don't let first impressions (the communal entrance hall) put you off, it is clean and cosy once you get inside. Previous issues mentioned in reviews have been resolved, (the scaffolding is no longer there and the sofa has been cleaned). Despite being in a huge building which contains a pub and a chinese restaurant, it is very quiet and you would never know they were there. The location is great - very quiet and an easy walk into Whitby, close to Staithes, Sandsend, Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay etc and the beach is directly across the road. It is perfect for dog owners! The only disappointment was that it lacks the added extras that would make this feel like luxury accommodation and it doesn't give the impression that you are particularly valued as a customer. There is no welcome pack, no toiletries and not a single bauble to be seen, (I was there for the whole of Christmas and New Year - all of the other holiday lets that I could see were decorated for Christmas). The bathroom is a DIY disaster but clean! All in all, a good property, I would stay again if I was heading to that area.

Disappointed that I wasn’t told about the scaffolding to the apartment two weeks before we arrived you should state on the website about the scaffolding of the building before booking as it disturbed us a lot waking my dog up in the morning and us as well constants banging which was very destructive when your trying to relax on holiday. In the photo when booking it shows that you have a bottle of wine/ champagne on arrival this was not available to us. The door of the bathroom catch was broken. The cleanliness of the apartment was incredible no complaints at all it was lovely. We was told it would be easy to find parking had to call on arrival where to park was told bay 3 which turned out to be the wrong parking space so we could have gotten charge for that so my finance had to move his car. Overall not very pleased with the building but location was lovely and cleanliness of the apartment absolutely amazing.

This is a lovely apartment. It was spotless on arrival. It is light and airy and the decor I would describe as modern. It had everything you needed and the allocated parking is definitely a bonus. The views from the windows and Juliette balcony are superb….I think I spent a lot of time admiring the view and watching the trains. The trains are just across the estuary but believe me they are no trouble at all I enjoyed watching them and it added to the charm of this apartment. Being on the estuary we saw herons, egrets, swans and plenty of ducks. It is only a short walk into Whitby to enjoy a good selection of shops, cafes and bars. We took a walk on the west cliffs and went to a Dracula play at the Abbey which was well worth a visit. We also took a train ride to Goathland. We have been to Whitby a lot over the years and this is definitely in our top 3. Thankyou for a lovely relaxing week.

The apartment was in a lovely location - we have stayed at Whitehall Landing before and the town is very accessible on foot along the riverside but far enough away to be peaceful. The apartment had great views of the town and river with all its wildlife - we saw a seal and a kingfisher as well as the wading birds. The property itself was very clean, well equipped and comfortable with its own parking space very close to the entrance - a major plus in Whitby. There is a little fish and chip shop two minutes walk and a pub 5 mins walk - you don't have to go into town for either. Both are good although a tip for The Middle Earth Tavern - its oddly table service including outside seating - although a super little pub regardless. We have stayed in Whitby four times and this is the best accommodation we've had.
