What our customers say about their holidays

    • Martin - Verified booking

Extremely disappointed with the accomodation at Bakers Yard.

We knew it was dated from previous reviews but the foisty, damp smell and dirtiness throughout was terrible. The bedrooms were adequate and the bed comfy however the bedding did not smell freshly laundered and the pillows were flat and uncomfortable . The bedding was so old it was thinning and felt cheap. The lampshade was covered in cobwebs at the side of our bed in the back room. Leading onto the bathroom…it was disgustingly dirty and mouldy. The shower screen had black mould alongside the seal and the bath seal was also black as was the grout. The tiles were cracked and broken and sharp edges were exposed alongside the bath. The wall light in the bathroom didn’t work and the top of it was covered in thick dust. We had the quickest of showers each morning and had to wear our flip flops for fear of cutting our feet on the tiles/flooring. Upstairs in the living area, the cushions were stained and filthy. There were dead flies in the flyswat left on a windowsill and the cupboard fronts felt sticky with grease. Again, numerous light fittings did not work and the skirting boards were thick of dust. One morning we were awoken early by the sound of builders setting up scaffolding on next doors cottage - we were unable to get our car onto the driveway due to their Lorries blocking the access and as such ended up paying for our car to be in the public carpark overnight for two nights. Any chance of us being able to sit in the yard with our books and coffee were quickly scuppered due to the noise. No welcome hamper upon arrival; we had travelled some distance to get there and then, due to check in being at 4pm (for cleaning?? I think not!) we had been out walking. Every other holiday cottage we have ever stayed in have had welcome hampers with enough to get you through til next morning…tea, coffee, wine and dog treats! There was nothing. I have tried several times throughout our stay to alert you to our complaint and have found your response lacking and uncaring. It is our first experience of using Sykes and I’m sorry to say, we would be most reluctant to book with you again. If this is the calibre of accommodation on offer with Sykes, we will not be back. I have taken numerous photographs if you would like them although you’ll be able to see them on our Trip Advisor review. I look forward to your response.

This cottage is pleasant and clean.

Parking is not an issue as plenty of room to park outside the rear gate if you can not get on the off road parking (it's a quiet cul-de-sac). Although it didn't say it had WiFi - I didn't specifically check as there is no reason not to have WiFi in Ambleside although I always check in more remote areas, so disappointing when we realised it didn't have any - this needs resolving in this day and age. Also the main road that runs along the front garden is noisy when you are out in the garden (although it is totally private due to high hedge) however we knew exactly where the cottage was so we were expecting that. Quiet in the house though. Really convenient location 5 mins walk from lake - we brought kayaks and easily wheeled them to the lake. There are the remains of an old Roman fort in the field opposite which is nice for a stroll round when waiting for everyone else to wake up - accessed via the park 5 mins away. The garage is really useful - we kept kayaks in there and would also be good for wet gear and/or bikes. Also there is a freezer in garage which was useful. I had trouble getting dryer to work which I reported and they responded within the day. Nice view from sitting room. I'm never keen on a dining table over a carpet especially with kids - I always worry I'll get a bill for cleaning but fortunately no mishaps. There is a front porch area which is useful for storing things you don't need every day like cool boxes, extra coats etc as you access the house via back kitchen door. All in all it is a convenient, pleasant, clean cottage.

This would be in the perfect location if it were only 20 yards or so further back from the road.

It’s a busy A road and whilst we expected some road noise, we didn’t expect it to remain noisy right though the night. Between that and mattresses that were made of concrete, we hardly slept. The shower door on the first floor was broken - this must have been known as you could not clean it otherwise. So- we were forced to use the one on the lower floor meaning a 2 stair trek in your towel each morning. Not great. Plus the controls for this shower were also dodgy. The window on the bottom staircase is cracked and the downstairs loo kept on refilling intermittently. The padlock on the parking space was broken when we got there, so all in all, not a very high standard of maintenance. There were 3 in our party, but had there been 4 we would have struggled to settle down on an evening. The small bay window area was plenty big enough for an arm chair, non of us could sit on the bean bag which was provided. A few little touches such as a place to hang tea towels etc would be good, and perhaps washing machine tablets. We couldn’t use the washer as we don’t usually travel with these and couldn’t find any in the property. On the other hand, the hob was great and the dishes were clean which saved a job. We usually have to run the dishwasher upon arrival in some cottages, but not here. We try to get to the lakes each year, but won’t be returning to this cottage I’m afraid.

We stayed at Bakers Yard Cottage for the week between Christmas and New Year.

We visit Grasmere frequently so knew where the cottage was located. There were a few pros but unfortunately more cons as listed below, not only to help the owners make improvements but also to guide future guests what to pack. The parking wasn’t as issue for us. We do have a big car so we realised from the listing there was no chance we’d be able to park in the space - we parked at the car park on Red Bank Road, £40 for the week. Pros Location Comfortable beds Clean sheets Clean bath towels and plenty of them Cons No mattress protector on one of the beds Only 4 dishwasher tablets (for a weeks stay) Only two tea towels Two black bin bags Cleanliness; Cupboards were dirty on the inside and the cupboard doors sticky Top of the extractor fan dirty with cobwebs Dirty fridge seal and door Dirty dials on dishwasher Dirty crevices on the shower Shower screen is mouldy and leaks We struggled to use the Henry Hoover as all that I could find was a brush to attach to the hose. Carpet is too thick for the doors downstairs, they are very difficult to close and as a result the bottom hinge on the hall door is coming off (photo provided if required) Big damp patch on kitchen sealing (photo provided if required)
