What our customers say about their holidays

    • Hannah - Verified booking

If you are looking for a wonderful, peaceful place to stay on a break away, Langdale Lodge is a must.

Set on a farm, you have a beautiful view from the living area looking out on to fields, lake and farm animals. We stayed during winter, which at times was quite a wet period but it was lovely, we chose to stay in and lit the fire which warms up the lodge and makes it nice and cosy. One of the most amazing things about the lodge is the wildlife cameras that you can watch. The farm is blessed with lots of wild animals and Mike kindly sends updates if there is anything exciting that comes through during the night. We spent most of our time when in the lodge with it running, periodically checking out what there was about and saw owls, mice, birds, geese, ducks and a rabbit. Those staying over the spring period will have such fun watching the owl houses too if there are owlets! The lodge has great facilities, the bed is comfortable, shower has good power, you can cook using the all in one and stove top. The settee is amazing as it’s a recliner, so you can sit back and relax whilst looking out of the huge window or watching the TV, which has the ability to login to any streaming services you might wish to. The wifi is good if you need to use. If going in better weather, there’s a lovely outdoor seating area on the decking. It’s all enclosed which was perfect for us and our little dog to be out in. We were made to feel very welcome upon arrival and even got to purchase some eggs from the hens on the farm. Thank you also to Mike who allowed us to say hello to the some of the farm animals too which was really special. We look forward to hopefully coming back again in a warmer period to enjoy all the fun things Devon and the lodge has to offer in a different season. Highly recommend staying here.

We found Shippen cottages to be ideally located in the East Devon countryside surrounded by good walks and plenty to do with the family; Lyme Regis is about twenty minutes away and Exeter half an hour or so to the west.

The towns of Honiton and Axminster are about ten minutes drive so whilst enjoying the peaceful location you are only a few minutes drive from the main south west arterial routes. The cottage itself is well equipped, deceptively spacious and was spotlessly clean. There is underfloor heating throughout which works a treat! Outside there is a good sized child friendly balcony overlooking a secure lawned garden. There are also meadows (where we saw deer) accessed through an adjacent gateway where the owner has thoughtfully mowed a pathway up to a picnic bench (and rope swing) at the top where you can take in the views. The cottages also sit on a bridleway which appears to have little use but is well marked and gives instant access to open countryside and beautiful views along the valley. The owner really has thought of everything, right down to the conveniently placed hose pipe near the front door that we used to rinse off muddy paws! This property ticked all our boxes and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending these cottages to others and will certainly be returning!… Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We originally booked this venue in order to escape from some very dusty carpentry work at our home for a few days.

We needed an accessible building in a quiet area with good facilities and reviews. How LUCKY we were! From the cream tea waiting in the fridge on our arrival to the fabulous, easy to use, wood burning stove. From incredible scenic views through our picture window to the livestream wildlife camera coverage system. The facilities really are first class here. The owner, Mike, is always contactable but never intrusive and always happy to help. We really enjoyed watching the wild birds visiting the feeders from the covered decking area and the antics of a flock of wild geese who seemed to spend much of their time in the paddock between the cabin and the lake below. We didn't do much sightseeing because we already had everything we needed in this wonderfully private and beautiful place. However, we did buy plenty of delicious local farm food within a 5 mile drive, after which a walk to explore the many tracks and fields was most welcome. Don't hesitate to book this very special place if you get the chance! Kind regards, Rosie and Juls.

There is a sign on the door which says “Welcome.

Come in relax and enjoy!” The stresses and strains of daily life ebb away swiftly as one loses ones’ self in the tranquility of the epic vista as the land slopes down through long waving grasses and poppies to the otter-inhabited lake with ducks and teaming wildlife; then climbs to bleating sheep-filled fields: thence to the scene of the historic Prayer Book rebellion of 1549. As one sits outside one watches woodpeckers, finches, robins, redstarts, blackbirds, sparrows, geese, ducks, squirrels, birds of prey, goats, sheep, otters and badgers- all at close quarters. Inside there is a nine camera monitor available 24/7 where one can watch the otters, ducks, badgers and others from the comfort of the sofa. Set on the edge of a very pretty village with church and pub this is a fabulous location for easy to reach travel to both coasts north Cornwall and many pretty villages, market towns and cathedral city. As was once famously said: “I ll be back!”

      What a wonderful wooden lodge!

It was warm and cosy. Everything we needed. Logs were available from Mike for the log burner stove. And a total 'brucy bonus' was the sofa - it's an electric reclining sofa!!!! Perfect for relaxing and watching the TV in the evening. Mike the owner has a wildlife channel so that you can watch wildlife on the large grounds in real time on the TV. The bed is soooo comfortable. The lodge is enclosed by an electric wooden gate which has a fob key making life easier. The views from the large picture window in the living area (and from the bed as the lodge is a studio layout: living room, kitchen, bedroom, all in one area) is truely beautiful. It overlooks a field and a large pond in the distance and of corse the rolling green hills. A truely beautiful setting! Very romantic. Dog friendly as the decking and side garden are safely enclosed. Certainly a five star lodge in our opinion for a romantic get-away.
