What our customers say about their holidays

    • Carolyn - Verified booking

The property is picture perfect from the outside inside is a different matter.

The floors needed a good mopping. There were cobwebs between items of furniture and the walls and spiders everywhere. We could live with this. The maintenance on the house is very poor. There are peeling damp patches around the house and general maintenance as poor. The tiling around the bath could have been done better by a three year old. The lighting was very poor with the only decent light in the kitchen. The kitchen was very poorly equipped. However the biggest issue was not mentioned in the Sykes blurb. It mentioned that the ceilings were low. They were fine at about 6 ft 5 inches high or taller. The one light in the lounge could be an issue for a very tall person but at 5 ft 10 I was fine. What is not mentioned in the blurb is that the door heights varied across the house. In order to prevent any head injuries you need to be a maximum of 5 ft 4 inches tall. My 85 year old father left after our stay with 3 bleeding head wounds from banging his head on the door lintels. There is obviously knowledge of this issue and the solution was to staple 3 small cushions to 3 of the doors, however the cushion was staples on to one side so your could reasonably safely enter that space but if you were to leave there was no protection attached to the door and injuries occurred. Overall the accommodation would really not be recommended. This is a pity as usually good from Sykes. It does not deserve any more than 2 stars at most. Fortunately it is in Devon and we could spend the days elsewhere in the county. The return to the house was not a time of joy. My recommendation is to avoid this property at all cost. It would really not be suitable for 6 people. I could offer mor observation’s but will leave it as DON’T STAY HERE!

You will notice I have not given the top mark for 'Accuarcy of the Listing' because Hiscox Cottage was so much better than the listing suggested.

Anyone that knows me will tell you I rarely get excited about having a holiday in the UK. The drive to Devon was very sad for us. It was the first holiday we had been on in the UK without our beautiful dog who sadly passed away in March. The view from Hiscox Cottage is simply stunning. So pretty. From the Dining Room/Conservatory in the cottage the view is so perfect it looks Super Imposed. The cottage itself is so comfortable. It has everything you need and more. It just felt like home. Driving around and exploring the area was so enjoyable. Coming back to Hiscox Cottage was just as enjoyable. What more could you want? How many times do you come back to two very cute Goats, a beautiful Alpaca and a Rhea (Ostrich) who just made us laugh so much. Don't worry people. These lovely animals aren't in the cottage, They are in a very nice field attatched to the cottage. For us, they really added to the experience. Can't wait to see them again. We stay in a beautiful cottage in North Yorkshire which we call our 'Jewel in the North'. After only day 2 we nicknamed Hiscox Cottage our 'Jewel in the South'. We cannot speak too highly of the owners of Hiscox Cottage. Joanne is just such a genuine person who obviously enjoys what she does. We left her two text messages and she got back to us immediately. Hiscox Cottage is situated on a 'working farm'. Really? You could have fooled us. The place is immaculate, as are the local areas. By the end of the week we just didn't want to leave. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. Can't wait. It is such a lovely place. All credit to the owners of Hiscox Cottage. You don't get that good at what you do without a lot of hard work. Thank you so much for a great week.

      What can we say ?

This is an absolutely beautiful cottage on a lovey farm and we had an amazing time. The Views that can’t be caught on a camera are just amazing. Everything you need is there. And the owners and staff can’t be any more helpful. You are free to roam the farm and view the animals. If you are looking to relax you cannot find anywhere better in my opinion. We went with our little dog and he absolutely loved it, he sat in the conservatory looking out at the view as we did, and he loved going out and walking the grounds, there are fields where he could have a run around and it was just perfect for us all. We had some eggs from the chickens (thanks so much). We really do need to go again no doubt about it, it was total relaxation. We didn’t really have a need to go to talk to the owners because everything we needed was there and they were busy, but they only live next door and they made it clear if we did need anything they were there, just to knock… But they left us alone relaxing. The couple of times we did want something the farm staff were most helpful. There is a very good welcome folder in the cottage with lots of good information, and lots of phone numbers for local facilities including a phone number for a caretaker. On arrival there was welcome bottle of wine which was very nice. Thank you. So in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it all passed far too quickly. The cottage sleeps 5 on two levels and a lovely large garden and a games room. Hopefully we can return again soon. Our thanks to all for a very relaxing time.

My family and I stayed in Barley House for a week after Christmas and over new years eve.

The hosts had decorated the property with a Christmas tree, which was a lovely welcome for our party. We selected the property for the spacious open plan living accommodation for our party of five and our labrador. There was plenty of room for the dog cage and we were able to walk our dog around the grounds of the property. There were local walks listed in the accommodation guide in the property which was very helpful. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of utensils, pans and ovenware. However, if any future guests did not want to cook, there were plenty of places to eat near by. And a pub within a stones throw. The three bedrooms where spacious; the first floor having their own bathrooms, and the ground floor having a neighbouring bathroom. The underfloor heating was lovely on your feet in the bathrooms. As were the waterfall showers, fluffy towels, and cotton bedding. Overall the property was comfortable, warm, homely and spacious. We would certainly return and recommend Barley House to our friends and family.

We had the most fabulous week here.

The cottage is gorgeous and the views are stunning. Sitting in the conservatory watching the day away was my favourite thing to do! We brought my husbands parents away with us. Mum had dementia and Parkinson’s but she very much enjoyed sitting in the conservatory chatting about the landscape and views. The facilities are fab and there is pretty much anything that you might need whilst on holiday. Our dog had the best time and having a fully enclosed garden was an additional bonus. I have to say also that considering the location of the cottage, the internet is outstanding! In fact better than ours at home! We run a business and needed to be able to remotely access things through the week, we brought a single but didn’t need it as it was so good! We made good friends with Ollie the Rhea and saw plenty lot other wildlife too. Jo was an absolute delight and we cannot wait to come back. Jules & Mark
