What our customers say about their holidays

    • Dave - Verified booking

Fabulous but first I’d like to address a previous review.

I can’t say it’s not accurate however we did not notice the “smelly dog” sofa. I do think some points are down to personal taste and the comments give the review an unfairly negative feel Unfortunately we are still in the middle of a global pandemic and there are many shortages including builders and the supply of skips, hence the leftover building materials. This was addressed the week we were there, having waited many weeks for one to become available. Yes, it’s a “mish-mash” of furniture but this can be quite clearly seen from the photos and is partly what gives the place its character and quirky feel. We found the hosts Ian and Ruth very friendly and we spoke to them on several occasions discussing how Basil’s Barn came to be and all the trials and tribulations involved. It was very interesting and explained the 1st floor storage area (building regs!) as well as many of the other lovely features. We think some of the shortages in the kitchen had already been addressed by the time we visited but don’t forget this is a brand new property and it’s easy to forget the most obvious things. However, a quick word with Ruth and she would almost certainly have gone out and bought them for you, she was so helpful. We thought the quality of the workmanship was excellent and a huge amount of attention had been placed on some of the details, each one having its own story. We had a lovely holiday, nicely sandwiched between 2 pubs and Egton is a picture postcard North Yorkshire village ideally placed to visit the surrounding areas and attractions of Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, North York Moors and the NYMR

It will be good when it's finished.

This is a great conversion but it is not complete to the standard we would expect. This property was listed before it was ready. When we arrived we thought we were in a builder's yard and could not believe that we had arrived on holiday. The left over builders' materials are stacked badly all around the parking area and this really harms first impressions and then every time you go in and out of the property. The gates are both difficult to use as the hinges have dropped, so this makes arrival and departure tricky. There is a real mish-mash of furniture including a 'smelly dog' sofa. On arrival I thought the smell was from the previous occupants but then realised the smell came from the second hand sofa. The rocking chair was uncomfortable to use as a relaxing chair, so there are really not enough suitable useable sofas. The cottage lacks rugs - especially the bedroom as you put your feet on the cold floor - it was too warm to sleep with underfloor heating in the bedroom but that left the floor cold. The bedroom also has too many items of furniture, the hanging rail was useful - but a simple chest of drawers would be better. No hairdryer. The kitchen lacks some equipment - an inadequate grater, no coffee pot and limited wine glasses. The whole storage area on the first floor is slightly odd too. It was a shame as the hosts were pleasant, the milk, tea and biscuits a nice touch on arrival, and the garden was lovely (slightly too many fairy lights!) and the area is fantastic. I think it needs time to be properly finished and made more comfortable. It could be really lovely with more care and attention.

This was our first time staying at Blink Bonney Cottage.

It was lovely the views are absolutely beautiful. Especially from the bedroom watching the lovely pink sky's and odd nights went to bed early just to listen to the birds singing. The beds were very comfy and everything was there we could need. We enjoyed the Guess Who game it was funny. Sitting outside in the sun in the back was lovely then we sat also on the front. We also took the 11.21 train midweek from Glaisdale Station 3 times to whitby and return, if you time it right when you arrive in Whitby you can catch the X94 bus, onto Robin Hoods bay and return to catch the 15.59 train back to Glaisdale. The northern line is called the pretty line, it was beautiful. Our daughter loved it. We also enjoyed visiting Lealholm the next village, another pretty place and did the stepping stones. We filled up with fuel too there, very handy prior to our journey home, and visited the village store which has everything and also the most gorgeous garden centre and local pub. We had a wonderful stay thank you. Sadly our holiday ended on the last night with sad news of my Dad passing away and I think I was meant to be there when I found out, I went and sat by the stream on our last morning and a blackbird visited, it hopped right up to me and stayed for quite some time, maybe it was my dad visiting me one last time, that's what I'd like to think.

Had a wonderful week away from it all this November in Blinkbonny.

The cottage is wonderfully situated in the lovely village of Glaisdale, just up the road from the local pub and the train station. The cottage has everything you could need and is very cosy. The owners Jonathan and Rachel leave a welcome pack, of milk, local cake, Rachel's home made marmalade and a Whitby Gazette and are very helpful. There are also provisions in the cottage to use if you want to use them such as tea bags, coffee and all the essential cooking equipment etc. The stairs are quite steep but that wasn't a problem for us and to be expected in character properties. It was so quiet and peaceful and the views were stunning. There are many walks in the area with the added bonus that a lot of the local villages have a train station if you didn't fancy walking home. Whitby is at the end of the line too, so twice we caught the train there and back. I would highly recommend stopping in Blinkbonny.

I can hardly believe that today is our last day on holiday in Yorkshire.

It has been an unforgettable week filled with wonderful experiences. The weather has been on our side, allowing us to explore some truly stunning places. We are so grateful for this opportunity to relax and unwind in such a beautiful part of the country. Our accommodation at Basil’s Barn in Egton which we booked through Sykes Cottages, has been nothing short of luxurious. The cottage itself is a true gem, with every detail carefully thought out and beautifully presented. The owners, Ruth and Ian, have been incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We cannot thank them enough for making this week so special. Barry and Jennifer. https://link.medium.com/fZXu9Qy0SAb
