What our customers say about their holidays

    • Angela - Verified booking

We returned yesterday, after a week in Cowslip cottage.

It was everything we expected it to be. A real mix of rustic with bespoke furniture and modern sofas. We arrived on a very wet miserable friday afternoon and as we opened the door we stepped into the kitchen, where we found a lovely welcome letter, a bottle of wine, fresh flowers in a vase and 6 large fresh eggs. A nice gesture that made us feel very welcome indeed. The cottage is very spacious, 3 large sofas on the ground floor along with a rocking chair, huge flat screen tv, coffee table, fitted kitchen with everything that you could want, large fridge freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle. Hob and oven and washing machine is in the cupboard across the room. We ventured further and found the king size bed and ensuite, again rustic bespoke wardrobes and drawers and the room was lovely and warm. Huge bed, im only 5'0", so it was no mean feat getting onto it every night. The ensuite is spacious with shower, sink, toilet and some shelves housing other equipment. We went upstairs out of curiousity really and discovered that it was just as lovely up there, but as there were only the 2 of us, we didnt need to go up there again. But there is plenty of room for a family of 6. Outside there is a garden, safe for kiddies and dogs, a wonderful hot tub and views of the sheep and horses in the nearby field. Its a haven, away from the hustle and bustle and you are surrounded by beautiful nature, and there is something so magical about sitting outside and all you can hear is the faint bleating of sheep and the birds singing. The weather wasnt the best, but the cottage made up for that. The owners Clere and Stephen were lovely people, they made themselves known and we had phone numbers to contact them if needed, but they just let us do our thing. We had a lovely week away, felt thoroughly relaxed and we would highly recommend Cowslip cottage.

The cottage was comfortable and nicely equipped and while located in a lovely rural setting it was still well placed for exploring the area.

The owner Stephen was welcoming and popped over to give us some extra information about the area which we appreciated. The provision of fresh eggs and a bottle of wine upon arrival was a nice touch as was the vase of fresh cut flowers. The hot tub was a fantastic addition and was well maintained. Two issues we found: 1. Flies! We were constantly bothered by flies inside the cottage particularly in the kitchen and living area. Flies dancing on the kitchen worktop and equipment while preparing food was off putting as was flies skirting the rim of glasses and mugs we were drinking from when placed on the coffee table in the lounge. I appreciate that flies on a livestock farm will be an issue but perhaps the listing should make it clear that the cottage is on a working farm close to cow sheds. Although we found a can of fly spray in one of the cupboards it did little to control the fly numbers present. Perhaps the issue could be tackled by installing electric fly killers or similar at least in the kitchen and living areas. 2. On first glance the garden appeared to be fully secure as it was fenced all the way around. However there was a small gap under one section sufficient to allow the farm dog in and our dog out! On the first morning of our stay one of our dogs managed to get out without us initially noticing. Fortunately he came back, but not before half an hour of frantic searching. Once wise to the gap we used rocks from the rockery to fill it. After that all was good! Despite the flies we loved the cottage and we would choose to stay there again if holidaying in the Pembrokeshire area.

The property was warm and large enough in terms of living, sleeping and dining space, but one bathroom and toilet is not sufficient for the size of the property.

The garden isn't secure with gaps and broken panels in the fence, which would allow my small dogs to escape. The garden also had feaces in it, which made it a problem for my dogs. I had to clean them on the first day And after that I couldnt allow them to go outside without a lead. The hottub had far too much chemical in it, it made my families hands peel. The dishwasher wasn't working and the hot tap in the kitchen wasn't working well, so using the hot water from this source to wash up was a problem. We boiled the kettle each time we needed to wash up. Some of the crockery was chipped, and old. Generally the property was comfortable enough, and we enjoyed our holiday but this property needed some maintenance. It felt unloved, it needed some TLC and a spring clean. It could be a really good property with a little bit of attention and maintenance. In terms of ratings, we felt that it falls short of 4.7 out of 5, and is the most disappointing of the 4 properties we have visited from Sykes Cottages site. Some of the things I've listed in my feedback are already documented in the visitors book, and still haven't been actioned. The property location is very quite, and in that way, a good place for a relaxing break. However, within a few miles there are local facilities and access to a small town. We received some locally sourced food item's on arrival, these were appreciated.

Sykes misled us as it clearly states on the listing that it is in Broadhaven when it's actually miles from Broadhaven.

We made the booking on that basis so we were immediately disappointed with the location as we'd visited the area 3 yeaes ago and wanted to return there and not stay at Hasguard Cross. The shop didn't actually stock anything so it is pointless to promote a shop nearby as the nearest shop is miles away in Broadhaven. The house itself was nice, needed a little TLC in places but it was spotlessly clean apart from flies under the beds in the ground floor bedroom. It is classed as sleeping 8 which it does comfortably but there is not room for 8 to watch TV on the sofas. We were cold in the house and had no way of drying clothes or towels. I think there should have been information there in regards to the heating as we didn't get a response from emails sent requesting help with this from the owner or Sykes but apparently, as we found out on the last day, the boiler was in the garage next door and had to be turned on there. We were asked to complete a disclaimer for the hot tub which we did and it said the hot tub would be checked for the correct chemical balance numerous times during our stay but this was not checked for the whole week we were there. I think the property would benefit from a washing line and also ice cube trays. The little bar in the caravan park next door is lovely and serves delicious food a few nights each week, has a pool table too.

      Lovely place to stay.

Even though this is a working farm it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. Lovely large comfortable beds and plenty of comfy seating to relax in. The property was tastefully furnished and was equipped with everything we could possibly need. The hot tub was an added bonus, even though it can’t be used after 9pm, though a trellis would add a bit of extra privacy. The welcome pack of wine, delicious farm eggs and flowers was a lovely and much appreciated touch. There is plenty to do and see within short travelling distances, lots of lovely walks and superb beaches. This really is a lovely area of Wales for a holiday. Haverfordwest, which is just a short drive away from the property, has plenty of places to eat and we can thoroughly recommend the Bristol Trader. We were a party of 6 and can honestly say their Sunday lunch was the best meal we have ever eaten, though booking is advisable. We had slight difficulties accessing the property initially as the information provided by Sykes was incorrect, so recommend contacting the owners in advance. It’s also worth noting that one of the upstairs bedrooms is galleried and overlooks the main living area as this was something we hadn’t realised from the description. Overall we had a fantastic stay and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property.
