What our customers say about their holidays

    • Elspeth - Verified booking

      A goldfish bowl!

We read all the recent reviews before booking this cottage and were surprised how positive most of them were. There were several mentions of a welcome pack on arrival which we couldn't find anywhere. This was a shame because it would have been a nice touch after us struggling with the trying parking arrangements - we had to park 100m away and then transfer our luggage by foot. The location of the cottage was good for walking and there is a fair pub close by. The description states 'an enclosed rear garden,' which is not true. The rear garden is reached either by the back (kitchen) door of the cottage or by using a gated passage which runs up the side of the cottage. This wouldn't be a problem except mid-week a family of two adults and three children arrived at the adjoining cottage. Although they had their own front door, they chose on several occasions to use the passage to the rear of our cottage, walking around the back and climbing over a 30" fence to reach their rear door. The first time we saw them, I had just finished having a shower and was standing in our illuminated kitchen sporting a small towel! And there was no curtains at the kitchen windows. Shocks all around. We asked them not to use the passage but they continued anyway. It made going into the kitchen a very stressful experience. Beware!

The cottage was lovely clean, welcoming, and warm.

Smelled lovely throughout. Had pretty much everything you could need, and some things we didn't expect, like the throws in the living room. Wouldn't recommend the stairs for anyone with mobility issues as the rope handrail is not really supportive, but that will only affect the minority of people. The village is really friendly. Village shop (which has new extended opening hours) has all the basics and Leyburn is just a short drive for everything else. Excellent location for exploring the Dales. Fox pub is great for a drink and recommend the Three Horseshoes, and the Thursday night chip van that stops outside the Fox - arrival times on their website (welcome pack just says check out their Instagram, so we nearly missed it as we don't have Instagram). We stay self catering in the UK every year, and this has been one of our favourites so far of the last couple of decades. Would have gladly stayed longer, and will look forward to coming back at some point. Info for owners: The drawers in the kitchen are a little wonky- when you open the second one, the top one dips and has to be lifted to shut the second one properly. Just needs some attention to the runners. A loo brush in the downstairs loo would be a good addition.

The cottage is beautifully presented, very well maintained and well provided for with everything you would need for a home-from-home stay.

Aileen and Colin have literally thought of everything! The whole accommodation is absolutely spotless so hats off to the cleaner - I was very impressed! The cottage is ideally located for easy access to Aysgarth Falls, Castle Bolton, Leyburn, Hawes and Richmond with plentiful walks from your doorstep, so much so that you could park your car up and not touch it again for a week. There are 2 pubs within a couple of minutes walk, and 2 more in Carlton and Wensley which are a 5 minute car ride away or as part of a walk for a well-earned pit stop pint and bite to eat. The added bonus of an enclosed garden was perfect for our dogs as well as being a lovely place to relax and unwind in the sunshine. I would highly recommend Myrtle Cottage, its just perfect in every way.

Arrived to find a welcoming property that was very clean, light and airy.

The accommodation was very comfortable and provided an excellent base as I was undertaking a course nearby for a few days and then spending some time rediscovering the local area - the absolutely delightful Wensleydale. Its location was superb for such exploration including local walks from West Witton as well as places only a short drive away. It was great that the cottage had off-street parking. It was situated in a quiet cul-de-sac but with easy access to the main road along the Dale. I had one question of the owner who was very friendly and helpful when contacted. For anyone with bikes or equipment there's a garage for this, although I didn't require this on this occasion. I would definitely stop there again.

This is a lovely cottage set in a quiet location approximately 3miles outside of Leyburn.

The property was well maintained and immaculately clean and pleasantly cool as our stay there was during an extremely warm spell. Beds were comfortable, clear instructions were given for the shower room and its ventilation and a good supply of fresh towels was available. The kitchen was well stocked and a welcoming cake and dog treats awaited us. The owners left lots of information regarding local walks, nearby pubs, places of interest etc. The rear garden was a sun trap which we made good use of. Altogether a very reasonably priced cottage for a peaceful get away and we would definitely return.
