What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rebecca - Verified booking

Swallow cottage unfortunately was very disappointing.

Other than the area, which is stunning and quiet, and outwardly the building appeared to be absolutely gorgeous. Inside was dirty and not maintained. The instructions on the Sykes website contradicted those left in the property. Firstly, there was no key safe as stated. So we spent a while trying to discover how to get in. After a phone call to the agent we discovered ourselves that there is in fact no key safe. And the property was left open with the keys on the upstairs table. The instructions from Sykes contradicted what was left in the owners book of instructions. 9:30 departure on Sykes, 9 am in the book. No instructions for the laundry, which we did work out ourselves but didn't end up using as the directions were so aggressive and blunt inside that I didn't feel like lining their pocket. Dogs welcome, fully dog friendly on Sykes but in the book keep them on lead and don't leave them alone ( which I did speak to the owner about, as this was one of the stipulations of us actually booking here.) The property inside although beautiful was dirty, and we spent an hour cleaning before we could unpack. I would suggest having a word with the cleaner as this is not a standard that is expected. We also had an extra horror of someone else's dirty underwear in one of the main bedroom drawers which we had to dispose of. It was a warm week when we stayed and half of the windows don't open, the double glass doors which lead to the balcony don't open properly and felt like they we're going to drop off. No exaggeration. And the double doors to the small fenced balcony do not open at all, resulting in no air flow all week. The toilet seat was dropping off, again I spoke to the owner about this and was assured this would be fixed but it was left so I ended up rectifying it myself. You will not get any service here unless you walk about the property outside. This can't be helped but needs to be more transparently advertised. Don't expect to be able to order in here, as we found nowhere to deliver locally. Understandable with the location but also I feel should be advertised. Good points The property location is quiet and a short walk into Port Isaac itself which is beautiful, scenic but also very hilly so keep that in mind if you are physically challenged. The property has a decent kitchen, with a large electric cooker, dishwasher and fridge. The king bed is comfortable, although my teenager found the bed in the single room to be uncomfortable. The property itself is nestled on a farm which is quiet and pretty and you have the extras of chickens and ducks wandering around. It is quiet and overlooks the bay. Nearby there is a dog friendly field by the second car park to your right as you go into Port Isaac that is fenced in, just in case your pooch needs extra security. We didn't end up spending a lot of time indoors due to all of the problems, and didn't get the impression from previous correspondence that anything would be rectified so made do for the week. But going forward we would not rebook unless standards met the price band paid. I am a travel blogger and hate to have to write negative reviews but renters need to know what to expect when they book a property.

We loved the lounge, bedrooms & garden.

Kitchen & Bathroom are really tired & quite tatty for this price bracket. Shower was pretty grotty and shower doors needed descaling, kitchen unit door broken with sign on stating. My wife had to buy cleaning products to clean. She even had to clean the cooker shelves before putting pizza in. We are in the renting Business, and would certainly not rent out with these rooms in this condition, and certainly wouldn’t to holiday makers. A friend of the owner popped round while my wife & daughter were in, to drop a mat off. So we are sure, because of this, the owner would have known about the builders opposite, as they had already been there a few weeks. Noise was constant & we even had to keep the front blinds shut, as it felt weird having 4 men just outside your window all week! We only booked 2 days before travelling down, so we feel really angry that we were not informed of this. We had half a dozen properties we could have booked from. When you only get 1-2 weeks away, it’s really upsetting to not even be able to chill out in the lovely garden, because of the constant noise! We even left to come home on the Friday morning! Builders were fine and even apologised, and felt quite sorry for us, also stating, we should have been informed. To add to all this, our dog was constantly barking at them, & my car was covered in building dust! We haven’t covered everything, but as you can see, this really isn’t great, travelling home 300miles early to get some peace and quiet. Holidays are way too rare for most people, & certainly not cheap, so it really hits hard when you have experiences like this, when you finally get chance for your family to spend a week together. Kind Regards, C A Meakin.

This was our second Christmas in Port Isaac and our 8th week over a 6 year period.

We were contacted by the owner and John Bray the day of our arrival, due to the weather there was an issue with the TV. This was replaced and all in place for our arrival, the cottage was decorated festively and a hamper was left inclusive of Champagne and Truffles. A real nice touch. The cottage felt very homely, it was warm and cosy with a starter pack of logs, kindling and matches. The fire is absolutely gorgeous, so for a colder month visit it's very much welcomed. The cottage was clean, tidy and really well presented. The owners have really made use of the space, the kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The bathroom has had a refit and is very spacious, with the shower offering a powerful flow. Comfortable beds, pillows and duvets made it a very good nights sleep. With the tranquil setting and nearby peaceful surroundings it did make getting up in the morning a chore! The garden is very well kept, I can only imagine how the summer months would feel with a glass of wine. Port Isaac harbour is a good 10-15 minute walk, it is on the back road so keep in mind it is a steep return if venturing to the pub! Personally, the privacy, tranquillity and overall feeling of being lost in your own world betters being in the centre of the village. Parking is very ample, which is a bonus for Port Isaac. We easily fitted a Ford Ranger on the front with no issues. All in all a fantastic week, a great Christmas and will definitely book again. Lastly, a shout out to Jayne (Owner) and John Bray for their communications regarding the Tv and general wellbeing of our week. We have stayed in various Port Isaac properties but this experience was just that little bit more for that special week.

We loved our stay at Swallow cottage.

Everything was as described with welcome hamper, coffee machine with some pods etc as per the listing. The bathroom is yet to be refurbished but we actually didn’t have any issues, the room is very large and spacious and the water pressure was great and water always hot! The kitchen was newly refurbished and was really well equipped with everything we needed and lots of really helpful extras such as plastic Tupperware to take lunch to the beach etc. The beach bag to borrow was a really lovely touch also! There was a little stooping under a few of the beams from my husband and I but that was expected for the little cottage and I am super tall. The garden is gorgeous and is bigger than you expect when looking at the photos. It backs onto a field with some cows who are lovely and come say hello when you are in the garden. The garden looked pretty closed off but our spaniel was always bound to find a way into the field -thankfully the cows ignored him and we got him back quickly. My one piece of feedback I gave to John Brays is to provide better directions as we got lost and ended up asking someone in a local house who pointed us in the right direction. If you get to the bollards saying maximum 6ft for cars, turn around and take the first right :) Thanks so much for a lovely stay. House was spacious, it was really peaceful and quiet and we lucked in with the weather this week so ideal! ;)

We had lovely stay in Bre Cottage.

Location is fantastic to enjoy the wonders of beautiful Port Isaac. There were a few things that we a little disappointing unfortunately:- - Only one bin bag provided so we had to purchase more - Only 1 toilet roll provide which meant we had to purchase more on our day of arrival (not ideal) - The main bathroom could benefit from a blind for privacy - The allocated parking space is difficult to find. Luckily the estate agents who own the property were open on our arrival and they very kindly drove us to the parking spot which was a really nice touch. We would suggest offering the location through the app 'what three word' as this would assist greatly - Cottage information pack states that recycling is not available whereas we worked out that it is actually available in the bins provided - It would be helpful if there were clearer instruction as to the the laundry room. It took us a while to work out that it is external room access from a separate outside door - Slightly disappointing that there was no welcome pack i.e. a pint of milk in the fridge would have been nice
