What our customers say about their holidays

    • Julie - Verified booking

We were very dissatisfied with the condition of The Abbey.

It was extremely dirty when we arrived. One of the beds was completely full of black dog hair, inside and out! The entire house was filthy. Full of cobwebs, dust and dirt on all windowsills and shelves, with dead flies and bugs etc. Bath had scum mark, showers had a lot of black mould, the dishwasher was virtually breathing... the list is endless and we have many photos. The owner called the cleaning company they use who arrived a couple of hours later and she did the best she could but was also appalled at the condition of the property and apologised, she too took photos. We complained about the lack of wine glasses and the owner purchased some and brought them over promptly. This was Christmas break and when about to prepare our Christmas meal we noticed all the baking trays were unusable, they were beyond rusty and also mouldy. I called the owner again and he promptly went to purchase replacements. The cutlery drawer was full of crumbs and dirt and utensil drawer was full of black dust and dirt... it was very unpleasant. We had to put everything through the dishwasher and disinfect the drawers before we used anything. In all we were very uncomfortable there and felt the high rent paid for that time of year was completely inappropriate given the condition of the house There was a hot tub but we felt it very risky to use from a hygiene perspective given the condition of the rest of the property, so it was a perk we didn't benefit from. The stress and inconvenience we experienced and could have really done without. We would have left but with other members of the family arriving from the next day we didn't have anywhere else to go. Such a disappointment.

We had a lovely stay here.

We literally booked at 9.30am on Monday morning to arrive at 3pm that day and the house was ready for us: clean, tidy and warm. On the first night, we had a few issues with the lights and we thought there may have been an error code on the hot tub. The owners arrived within 10 minutes and sorted everything for us - it was just a lightbulb and no concerns with the hot tub. Before we arrived, we were concerned about possible building works next door which had led to a previous bad review but Sykes contacted the owners who said the works had finished. Day one was fine but we could hear some works on day two. These did not bother us though as they weren’t very loud and could only be heard when we were out in the garden but the owner popped across with a bottle of wine to apologise (we had not mentioned the noise to the owner at all.) This was quite unnecessary but was a really lovely gesture considering the owners could do nothing about it. The house was a really good size and the utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer was super handy. The front room was really spacious and the three sofas gave us ample room to spread out. We loved the large kitchen table - it set the scene for a dramatic game of Farmopoly - the boys loved the alternate version of Monopoly and the other games left for us. All in all, we would highly recommend Waldegrave Barn.

Abbey Cottage is very beautiful, the size of the garden is huge & filled with many plants & trees.

Our 3 dogs loved running round the Cottage & playing ball. The thatched roof is beautiful with its wolf & crown perched on top. Inside is a large beautiful kitchen filled with everything you could wish for, I never wanted to return home. Three large king-size bedrooms with lovely crisp clean bedding, two with en-suites bathrooms & a downstairs WC. The dining room adorns an old table & chairs in fitting with the period of the property. The lounge has two comfy sofas & an old wooden chest as centre piece. All rooms have a TV, so there's no reason to fight over the remote! There are two staircases, one easily accessible from the lounge & another that resembles mountain climbing by the kitchen. You will not believe the slope of the floors upstairs until you see it! Apart from the kitchen & bathrooms, which are modern. The rest of the property is kept more in keeping with the original features. The vast conservatory is so beautiful, I'd love to go back during the summer months to enjoy it! In the gardens is a meditation room that lights up beautiful at night, a summerhouse with a pool table, a table tennis table in the garden, a playroom wooden house & a Shepherds hut for extra guests. We had the best relaxing time, just remember to take slippers for the cold hard flooring & wellies for the morning dew outside.

Babbelkous is an amazing property, juts like something from Grand Designs.

It is a fabulous family home, let out as a holiday property. The spaces are light and warm, with plenty of places to sit (although not together) and nice views. The beds are comfortable, with nice linens. Although the property is between a railway line and an A road, it is peaceful and quiet. There is a courtyard garden with long tables, barbeque, pizza oven and hot tub. All those modern conveniences mean that this is a complicated house. There are a dozen thermostats, an air exchange system where the fans run all night, windows that confuse grandparents, and soooo many unlabelled light switches. It would all be obvious when you lived there for a while, but turning the lights out before bed invariably took ages. Similarly the wood fired pizza oven and hot tub are not easy things to get right on your first attempt. We had a lovely week there, but at times it did feel more like a working holiday than a holiday.

      This house is fabulous.

We were searching for a large house that could accommodate our families for a long weekend. We couldn’t ask for anything more. We loved the excluded property, modern design of the house and of course the pizza oven! The house owner was very informative and helpful with our needs. We had a lovely welcome basket which was very thoughtful. The house had all the amenities you could need. All of the beds and pillows were very comfortable not to mention everything was spotless. I was really impressed of how eco friendly the house was with all renewable energy. Heated floors were a hit. The sunken garden In the backyard is absolutely fabulous, we loved being able to spend time outside together. The only thing we wanted to change was that we wished we booked our stay a little longer. We enjoyed it so much we didn’t want to leave. If you’re looking for a jaw dropping stay this house will impress.
