What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

Love this place and location. We have stayed in Ariel’s sister cottage twice before and unfortunately found it to be a little bit cleaner and better managed. Sadly our experience was not one of an ‘enhanced cleaning protocol ‘ . It was clean, but it could have been better. Inside kitchen drawers were grimey and with food crumbs. One set of single bed sheets had hardened paint splashes on top and bottom sheet. Fortunately, we had an unoccupied bed we could swap sheets with so as not to endure hard scratchy sections . Our top double sheet frankly looked like it had bird poo on it, perhaps from being dried on the line outside somewhere? The wall to the left of the sink had a lot of brown splashes on it, like tea stains. The sitting room sofas and some of the carpets still had a lot of dog hairs on from a previous visitor. The rusting main bedroom radiator really needs repainting. These places are not cheap and at nearly £200 per night we felt for the first time this wasn’t quite up to the mark unfortunately, especially with current cleaning expectations. Still, there was no way we were not going to make the most of our much awaited break, got out and about every day, got on with it, didn’t waste a minute and had a wonderful time. It was our decision not to contact the housekeeper to rectify these points as we didn’t want to loose any of our precious holiday time getting these things sorted. All my dealings with Rural Retreats have been faultless, very straightforward and exactly as you would hope them to be.

We had to ring Rural Retreats because we could not contact our Housekeeper, her phone had been switched off, to mention that we had not received our welcome hamper. Rural Retreats arranged for another Housekeeper, Juliette, who looks after Stella Cottage next door, to bring one to us. She was very friendly and gave us a lovely welcome. The radiator in the Dining Room did not work and we noticed that another guest had mentioned this fact back in February 2024! We have stayed in Ariel before in 2017. It is in a wonderful position with lovely views. So peaceful and tranquil? We loved all the refurbishments especially having a walk in shower. Sadly some of the windows are suffering badly from rot and the one in the kitchen was letting in the heavy rain. Nevertheless it is a lovely cottage to stay in and we had a brilliant week.

The location of the cottage is breath taking. We wanted to stay near a lighthouse and this fit the bill. Julie is an excellent host and the cottage is clean and spacious and light. There was even a welcome box when we arrived which the children were very excited about. Everything you need is in the cottage, right down to a drying rack for wet clothes, blankets on the sofas to snuggle up in the evening and comfy beds. It was especially nice that the dog was welcome. The garden is secure and the coast path is literally on the doorstep for beautiful walks. Couldn't recommend this highly enough. We will visit again.

Great setting overlooking the sea. The cottage was clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped including a super welcome basket full of essentials and goodies. Beach with fantastic rock pools within walking distance. The coastal path does pass by the cottage so there are walkers going through but vehicle access is restricted to residents by a locked gate. There is also a camp site and cafe in the adjacent field but this can't be seen from the cottage. Two good local pubs serving food within a few minutes driving distance. Generally very quiet and peaceful.
