What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

Carol and Ron are truly fantastic hosts.

Not only do they have a passion for making our stay wonderful, but they also have a true interest in their area of residence and surroundings. The Retreat, is a wonderfully serene, quiet and central place to stay. 4 acres of well kept gardens, a small pond, pagola, a firepit if that's your thing, swings, a local park, walks by a river etc etc The facilities at The Retreat are excellent, it's clean, well maintained, well equipped with 2 WCs, walk in shower, lovely kitchen area and has literally everything that you may need whilst your here within a short walk of this wonderfulproperty, (or drive if you so wish). Two main supermarkets are an easy 15 minutes stroll away, although you'd never know it, there's peaceful walks around this small village type atmosphere, local shops, places to eat and drink more or less cover it all. The local peoples are pleasant and friendly. It's idealic in so many ways. We have seen monkjack deer, squirrels, hedgehogs, all on site whilst sitting on the porch, lazing and taking our surroundings in what could easily be miles from anywhere. We certainly cannot praise or recommend enough that you stay here if you want to truly enjoy a better lifestyle when your in need of that wind down. Tranquility and peacefulness will certainly be fulfilled. We leave here with some sadness, but also with an eagerness and anticipation for our next stay in March 2022. 100% we will return 2 very minor points to say if you are suffering from a slight disability. The sofa we found quite low for us and the front steps are a tiny bit high to negotiate if you are a sufferer of arthritis or bad backs. These are not in any way faults of property, these are from a personal view as older senior citizens.. DO NOT BE PUT OFF. To cover this we spoke to Carol and Ron and amazingly they have "The Lodge" another of Carol and Ron's excellent facilities, already more geared to our/these needs. So absolutely covering our personal needs for our return here in March 2022 and quite honestly we cannot wait to come back. STAY HERE, YOU WONT REGRET IT, ITS GLORIOUS. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou

      We’ve had an amazing week!

The lodge itself has everything you could possibly need and was ideal for the two of us and our dog. The grounds are fabulous and Jasper loved having the freedom to run around, roaming and exploring the different sights and smells. The various areas for sitting and reflecting are lovely and we even lit the fire pit on our final night. The nature we saw was spellbounding! We particularly loved sitting out on the veranda from dusk to darkness to watch out for the regular visits of the deer and foxes. The swing chairs on the veranda were a godsend after a long day walking. We had good weather but the one evening it did rain, we were still able to sit on them and not get wet while enjoying the views and peace and quiet with a glass of wine- bliss! The sun beds (towels provided) were also a welcome touch and well used. Carol and Ron were excellent hosts and looked after us extremely well, making us feel very welcome but without imposing on us in any way. The Retreat is also certainly the most dog friendliest place we have stayed. We spent a lot of our time outside on the veranda but Jasper was welcome on furniture as long as we used the throws provided. There was nowhere where he was not welcome and we loved seeing Carol and Ron’s dogs as well. We certainly feel like we have been on a ‘Retreat’!

We went away for a reset between Christmas and New Year.

We were looking for a relaxing break with dog walks on the doorstep and close to forests and the coast. We got that and more. Our hosts Carol and Ron have put alot of love and work into this place. The small touches were lovely and made us smile. From the warm welcome on arrival and departure to the chocolates, cheese & biscuits, homemade lemonade to the toiletries, slippers and warm clothing, as well as those essentials you need and sometimes forget. They are on hand to help if you need it but otherwise will not disturb you. There is also a handy pack for the dogs and some treats too. The bed is so comfortable too. We had a great few nights of sleep. There is lots to do on your doorstep as well as the high street within walking distance and a supermarket and petrol station close by. You wouldn't know though as the property is so quiet and you are free to roam the beautiful grounds, all securely closed off so our dogs could go off lead. We visited Brandon Forest, Wells-next-the-sea, Sheringham, Cromer and Felbrigg Hall. We also spent time relaxing in the egg chairs on the veranda with binoculars left for our use watching the local wildlife. We have stayed in lots of Sykes properties and this is one of our favourites. Highly recommended.

A lovely stay in a beautifully maintained lodge in great grounds.

From the moment we walked up the steps to the lodge met by the smell of wood we knew we were in for a treat. Loved the safari theme, and the place was so comfortable. Great to watch the rabbits, squirrels, birds and fallow deer as we sat relaxing outside on the balcony. A warm welcome from the lovely hosts Carol and Ron who were available if needed, were so supportive when we were caring for our dog, but always found the right balance between being at hand and giving us our privacy. Such lovely people. Great location to walk to Brandon station - 20 mins to the cathedral city of Ely. Had planned similar trips to Cambridge and Norwich but needed to stay “on safari” so our dog could rest - couldn’t think of a better place to stay when we needed to stay put. Thank you Carol and Ron for helping ease a stressful situation with our dog needing to rest, and sharing your beautiful property with us. We hope at some stage, we’ll be able to return and enjoy it again, as well as go on the trips we’d planned.

WOW! firstly - Carol and Ron are the best hosts I have ever known.

So welcoming , fun and attentive. I genuinely miss them after arriving home. The Retreat is the best I have ever stayed in. so tranquil and calm . The grounds are utterly impeccable and vast, it felt like we were in our own version of paradise and didn't want to leave. Everything has been thought of and we loved eating dinner in the pergola and having afternoon tea by the lake. The cabin is faultless . Be warned you will come home yearning for egg chairs . budget now ! feeding the foxes and squirrels and deer daily was a real treat , absolute heaven and we plan to be back as frequently as possible . An absolutely faultless and exceptional week. Well done Carol and Ron. it is EXCEPTIONAL. we miss you and the cabin. ♡
