Very unhappy and dissatisfied with the stay, the lack of response from the owner and the 'nothing much we can do' vibe from Sykes.
.leaving me with no resolution and having to consider other avenues. A large number of asthmatic people (me included) are sensitive to bad smells and chemicals. So I didn't expect a damp musty smelling bedroom and a portable air freshener in the bedroom. I did locate the black damp and have pictures and videos of it. Quite shocking too we couldn't open the windows or door to air the room. The cleaner did (just about and after a long struggle) the next day but the issue urgently needs sorting. It also felt a bit of a fire trap. The following day a cleaner came out, suggested the carpet did need cleaning, acknowledged the smell but I felt underplayed the seriousness and discomfort. She also commented that you wait forever for an electrician in Whitby but yet arranged for one that very day who did t just replace the light bulbs but the entire light fittings in the kitchen. First impressions were also spoilt by the kitchen having no working lights and cobwebs and dust in many places. There was a note from a previous guest saying they had informed the owner of the non working lights. However this is minor in comparison with the bedroom smells which made me cough and affected my asthma for the entirety of the stay. The owner and Sykes were made aware of this from a very early stage. Up until now no compensation has been forthcoming. I think most owners would be horrified this happened and would want to make amends asap. Not this one sadly The cottage itself is in a great location and is just a few minutes walk from the train station and close to all the main attractions. The living room area is quite nice with an attractive large cosy fire. The sofas are showing their age a bit but not too bad and the carpets all need replacing. The bathroom was fine and there's ample storage for clothes. The bed itself is cosy but the pillows are too soft. Being a basement flat the room was very dark even in the daytime. There was nothing finishing touches like milk in the fridge or a few tea bags etc. It just felt a little bit cold (on more than one level). Wouldn't recommend.

Stayed here over the Goth weekend and wouldn’t stay again. It’s basic, a place to sleep but not much else. Lack of basic amenities, no toilet paper, no working heating, no WiFi, toilet flush takes many tries to work, hot tap barely worked. And it’s a fair walk to the co-op to get the basic necessities that are provided by most other cottages. Other people in our party stayed in a bigger cottage near the abbey which was cheaper and they provided a welcome basket containing basics like teabags, milk etc. so I’d look elsewhere if you’re staying in Whitby. Place was also not very clean. Black mould in the shower, dirty mirrors and hair all over the floors. Knelt down in the bedroom while unpacking and was covered in what I assume was dog hair. Also if you bring a pet, check under the wardrobe in the bedroom as there’s loads of dog toys stuck under there too. Located on a noisy street which can’t be helped but expect to be woken up by the boat yard opposite at 6am and you will hear every person who walks past through the night as the windows are single glazed. Minus the mould the shower is good though, very powerful. Overall, for the price there’s a lot better places to stay in Whitby so I would look elsewhere.

A perfect location, spacious and comfortable.
Minutes into town and the excellent choices for food and drinks. However, there are a few things that could be better. After the long journey, it would be nice to have some milk in the fridge to make tea or coffee, rather than the bottle of wine left on the side. Also, no salt, pepper, coffee, etc. which is a surprise as that's just some basic stuff you'd expect to find in a kitchen. The owner very kindly arranged for a new all seasons quilt to replace what was both a very warm and very worn quilt that was originally on the bed. It definitely needed replacing! The blinds in the bedroom are very fiddly to work (the one on the bedroom door would not go up at all) so we couldn't risk putting them up once they'd been set up for nighttime on our first night. Time to replace these too we feel. There was a general lack of natural light overall but that's understandable given its position at the bottom of the building. No sprays available to clean the kitchen surfaces with and this would be helpful each day after any cooking. We had a great week in the area. The above suggestions are made to help and based on what we've experienced in other Sykes locations.

The good bits; The property is absolutely ideal for a couple who are reasonably fit.
It has a prime location in Whitby town centre only yards from the bus station, railway station, the harbour and local shops. Internally the apartment is very well appointed and very spacious. everything you need is provided and is of good quality. The bad bits; parking is not possible close to the property. Car parks are available within a 10 minute walk at a cost of £9.00/day or pro rata. After a call to the property owner, guidance was given to where on-street parking was available, however, this was quite a distance from the property and on a very steep hill.[hence the fitness comment]. The owner provided scratch cards to facilitate on-street parking for the duration of our stay. There is no access to the rear of the property from the inside { fire safety issue] so rubbish had to be taken on quite a trek to the rear of the property and placed in the relative bins in the back yard. All that aside, we had a very enjoyable stay at the Bolthole Whitby..

When we arrived it was -2c and there was no heating on, the apartment was damp and smelled musty, we took in our luggage adjusted the heating and went to Costa for a warm and a coffee.
The musty smell continued for the whole week. The tv advertised as freeview well we had ITV on the Friday and Saturday when we arrived and then nothing until the following Thursday only BBC and then nothing again on the Friday. In the summer this would not be such a big issue but in the winter with dark days and long evenings we felt at least we could watch our favourite programmes as your brochure describes ie- freeview. On our previous visit there was rear access / fire escape via a door in the bedroom this is now locked with no key and the opening casement window has been sealed up meaning there was no ventilation which contributed to the musty smell and there was no rear fire escape.
