What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lesley - Verified booking

Bear lake lodge We have been away with Sykes at least 12 times and 4 times in the last 2 years and never had need to complain, ever.

If it hadn't had been for the beds then we could have dismissed the rest, but that made everything else seem so much worse and built up a pattern of uncleanness which we couldn't dismiss. The property is in a nice setting and some bits were spotless, so we wonder if something has gone wrong or someone has got distracted and forgotten some of their chores. The settee doesn't look much but is a recliner and very comfy. It is very peaceful, you can hear a pin drop at night. Plenty of hot water and the heating is very efficient. This may be a one-off, but we won't be coming back to find out. We never saw the owners, and we would have said something if we had. We didn't want a confrontation on their doorstep and then stay for the rest of the week and if they had offered to sort some of our issues, the trust had already gone with the way they left the place for us. Dog smell upon entering. Bedding crumpled, smelly and used tissue between sheets. Pillows smell of a grufty old man's unwashed head. Had to buy new pillows, febreeze and cleaning stuff. 3 mattress protectors on 1 bed and bottom1 ripped to shreds, top 2 stunk and 3rd was ripped but had to leave on. Bathroom soap, used, in basket and wash puff suckered to wall. Round foil top off something stuck to the mouldy shower curtain which had obviously not been cleaned. What is the rusty old cabinet about? There were still stuff inside that we didn't even want to touch and it was rusty inside and out. Oven trays disgusting but couldn't get oven to work anyway, thankfully Front door does not close properly or lock after sun has been on it all day. Had to force shut from outside and use patio doors. Used whole bottle of Febreeze, zoflora and pack of wet wipes to clean place for 2 hours before we decided if we were going to stay. Mattress overlaps bed about 6 inches on width. Knob on end of bedstead broken. Pull light switch above bed cord is snapped 1ft from ceiling. Not a smart TV and even if it was it would need the Internet to work as a smart TV anyway. No WiFi. What is with the Amazon firestick remote control on the windowsill, i got my hopes up? Signs saying dogs on lead and no dogs allowed around the pond yet owners jack Russell runs around unaccompanied and owner walked 3 dogs around the pond off lead all way around. As you can imagine, we left 2 days early, very disappointed

The cottage is small but cosy.

I was warm without the central heating on, and the occasional blast from the electric fire. Beautifully clean and great modern furnishing. The kitchen had everything I needed along with a pint of milk in the fridge. The bed was super comfy and clean and the bath was amazing!!! I liked having real plants around too. As other people have said, the cottage IS on a main road, which can be noisy, but only at certain times. I was able to pull up outside to unload (the kerb is dropped there), and parked a minute walk away. The picture of the bus stop was a brilliant marker when I arrived!!! The stairs in the cottage are quite steep and curl round quite sharply, so if you are a bit wobbly on your legs, it might be harder to get upstairs, but there is a solid handrail, and also a grab handle at the top to keep hold of. Overall, a really lovely stay with some good walking in the Peak District.

I had a great time at The Snug.

The owners were brilliant with their communication with me before and during my stay and helped me greatly. If I ever needed anything then they were there for me but otherwise left me to enjoy my stay. A fantastic location, central Duffield with great links to the city or going out to Belper, Bakewell and Matlock. Everything within a comfortable distance. The Snug is immaculately clean and the furnishing is very nice. It’s massively spacious. Fully fitted kitchen with washing machine for longer stays. A Smart TV both in the lounge area and bedroom is a very nice inclusion so you can enjoy your time in The Snug when not going out. I would not hesitate to book again in the future and look forward to coming back. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Bear Lake Lodge was the ideal location for a "Get away from it all" break.

Just what the doctor ordered!!! Peace, tranquillity and the owners are wonderful and on hand should you have any queries but leave you to enjoy your stay. Their dogs, sheep and goats are also a delight. The view from the lounge of the lake is wonderful and ideal to walk the dog, she loved it!!! Also a large enclosed garden for my furry friend to safely patrol. Plenty of safe walks within a short distance for spaniels who need to be off lead too, making it the ideal destination for us all. The bed was so comfortable enabling a far better sleep than at home. A very pleasant accommodation all round which I can thoroughly recommend and hope to return to again. Many Thanks Katherine and Nick for a wonderful stay xx

      What a gem!

We stayed at the Snug for four nights. Set in a lovely location (although on a main road so noisy but this didn’t bother us). It was immaculately clean. You would have no idea it was pet friendly if it wasn’t for the dog bowls and treats left. Kitchen well equipped with good quality utensils etc. the bathroom is gorgeous with fantastic shower. Bath mats and towels available. The bedroom is lovely with just what you need (including a fan as it was very warm weather). Very comfortable bed. A pint of milk was in the fridge and some sachets of tea, coffee and sugar which was lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt it was an ideal location to go off exploring.
