What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rachel - Verified booking

This is a really pretty cottage in a quiet pretty village however to be a retreat you need to be 3 things, dry, comfortable and rested.

This cottage is being let down by basic problems. The 3 single beds have 1 mattress that is adequate, I spent the first night on the sofa to try and get some sleep. The pink bedroom is very damp, all clothes hanging in the cupboards quickly smelt of damp and the bedding on the grey bed also smells of damp. The garden is very neglected, I weeded the steps to create a safe path for my husband, and there is a pond which would be dangerous if we had small children. This is such a shame because the rest of the cottage is lovely, the kitchen is well equipped. The sitting room is cozy with French windows that looked onto the garden. The locks on the French windows and the front door are very tricky and at times impossible to lock or unlock. Because of the rural nature of the cottage the Wi-Fi is very limited so I advise doing your research before you get to the cottage for places to go. We did find the most of the local pubs had better Wi-Fi if we needed to load books to kindle or look something up. If the above issues were sorted out we would have no hesitation in returning to such a lovely place. So much more to explore.

The cottage is clean, cosy, close to all local amenities and in a central position to explore Northumberland and the Scottish Borders .

Helen, the owner, has thought of everything to make the cottage a home from home, including having plenty of coal and kindle to make a roaring fire when the weather gets a little chilly. We were lucky we didn't need them but there's also plenty in the cottage to keep you and the kids amused if the weather isn't great with a good selection of DVD's, books and board games to work through. Beds are lovely and comfortable and the kitchen is fully equipped with anything you may need. Helen, herself was very helpful. As we were staying for 2 weeks she contacted us before the start of the holiday to ask if we would like the freezer turning on and if we would like extra bedding leaving so we could do a change, she also left a lovely welcome pack for our arrival. Its little things like this that make a big difference We can fully recommend the local pub, The Waterloo Arms which is literally just over the road, very friendly staff and customers who make you feel really welcome too. We will definitely be back

This is a great cottage in a lovely quiet area.

It is deceptively spacious, very comfortably accommodating our party of four adults and a dog. There is loads of storage and a well equipped kitchen. It was nice and warm when we entered and we appreciated the option to adjust the heating if required. As previous reviews have noted the single ensuite room was cold - we think the radiator may need attention. The wifi router appears to be faulty and we had no wifi for the duration of our stay. Phone signal is very good but this was inadequate, given that the television required wifi and therefore mobile data was drained quickly. Once these issues are addressed, it will be a super cottage.

Lovely family cottage with plenty of space.

All rooms are large and airy. Very comfortable beds and sofas in lounge. Cottage was spotless when we arrived. Heating was great, there is even an open fire (with coal and wood provided). Lots of DVDs to watch, music CDs to listen to and board games to play. Everything that we needed for the week was in the cottage. The cottage is situated in a smallish borders village with local shop, chip shop, pharmacy and local pubs. The pub (just a couple of doors away) allowed dogs and children in. Food from pub was great. Village was very close to places of interest like Berwick upon Tweed, Eyemouth, Holy Island and Alnwick.

We really enjoyed our stay at Iona cottage.

I only have one very small thing to mention . Given that there is no shop in the village, it would be useful to have a couple of dishwasher tablets and a couple of spare bin liners and if this isn't possible, to mention that guests bring some with them. I did buy some eventually and left them for the next people to use. Just one other small point... The front door was often very difficult to lock. We always managed it eventually, but it was exasperating. Apart from these two small points, we found the cottage comfortable and extremely well equipped. Would definitely book again. Thank you.
