What our customers say about their holidays

    • Angus - Verified booking

      Yes, 'Met Expectations' but.

.. For the price (economic, ie about £100 p/n) the standard was mostly good, so no complaints there, but the 'write up' was rather 'over-the-top' - described as 'luxurious' - well not quite, eg I'd like a more comfortable bed for 'luxurious' and the 'platter of delicious local produce' consisted of a Higates flapjack made in Wasall and two Lichfields products - digestives and 'highland shorties' - from Northants. Not exactly 'local'! Didn't eat any of it - but the 'delicious may be a bit over the top too. Better to not mention them. In similar vein, the views were described as 'outstanding' - well, they were pleasant enough - a couple of fields with sheep, not exactly 'outstanding' especially in an area where there are indeed so many truly outstanding views. Strange that, although bed linen and towels were included, there was no tea towel. It was explained that this was because so many tea towels were 'stolen' by previous guests. My advice - just add £5 to the o/n price and buy in a load of Lakes tea towels and invite guests to take it away with them, if they wish, as a souvenir - compliments of the owners. One final thing - about being 'welcoming' - I did not read on the site I booked through (snaptrip.com) about not checking in before 4pm although I may have overlooked it but we did follow the advice to phone and let the owners know our ETA. Bit surprised that my wife was told to 'wait' while lady's husband was consulted before agreeing to our arrival at 3pm. When we arrived - after a 5 hour drive - at 10 minutes to 3pm, the entry gate was locked. It could have/should have been open for us - but perhaps the owners wanted to give us a message? Not the way to 'welcome' guests! By-the-by, with winter approachng and clocks going back an hour at the end of this month, if guests are not 'welcome' before 4pm, they will be arriving more or less in the dark. Surely, even with Covid ceansing, there is time from 10 am (departure time) to 3pm - 5 hours - to thoroughly clean and sanitise correctly.

My friends and I had a most enjoyable stay at this cottage.

The cleanliness of the property was exceptional and we were delighted to have been treated to Kendal mInt cake and some locally home made fudge. Unfortunately we had two complaints. The modern hive heating system failed to work. On the Sunday I tried phoning the office and mobile number to no avail. I then sent a text message to the mobile number and eventually we were contacted. We were told to wait half an hour for it to work but it didn't so I rang again and told to wait another half an hour but still no joy. However, we discovered the following morning on our departure, from Martin, that the boiler needed rebooting! We would not have been able to reboot the boiler as a key was required! The other complaint was the smell coming from the two upstairs bathrooms. We think the cesspit was beside our cottage. Also, you may wish to update your cottage description. All three double bedrooms converted into twin rooms but when the booking was made the description stated that only two doubles converted to twins. A friend who could have stayed ended up booking a local B and B for two nights. Although we had these issues we did have an enjoyable stay and the hot tub helped keep us warm! Would recommend to family and friends.

Brilliant peaceful but central location with secure, private parking.

Beds and seating very comfortable, kitchen and bathroom clean and well equipped. Excellent lake / countryside walking opportunities straight from the door and easy access to bus stops plus the shores of Ullswater and the steamers. Local shops supply a good choice of produce if you wish to cook at the property or you can order groceries online to be delivered from a major supermarket for convenience. There are also plenty of options for eating out locally, all within easy walking distance. The property has everything you need for a Lake District holiday - even the clothes airer was decent quality and sturdy enough to dry larger items without collapsing or blowing over. The plug sockets are usefully positioned so you can charge items easily or use a hairdryer close to a mirror - not all properties we have stayed in have thought about such things. We also appreciated the Lake District themed wall art / biscuits / Herdwick sheep etc - the map wallpaper is a great feature. Overall a very comfortable and convenient property - would recommend.

We had a great stay, lovely location and the house was finished really nicely and well maintained.

It has everything you could need for a break in the Lakes. The location is great next to Ullswater, much calmer and more peaceful than being near to Windermere, and there are plenty of activities and walking to do from Pooley Bridge. We tried 2 of the local pubs, the Crown Inn and Pooley Bridge Inn, both were really good. Also being within walking distance of the lovely boat trip the Ullswater Steamers is great. The house has its own driveway so you feel a bit smug driving past everyone struggling to park in the village to your own space which was a nice extra, Pooley Bridge gets busy (we were there in the half term week) so it's a great benefit. Worth noting is that to get to most places outside of Pooley Bridge you will drive on smaller roads through the mountains, the Kirkstone Pass is nearby and Googles first choice of route towards Windermere, be sure to research the main roads like the A6/A66 if you are travelling with children/passengers who get car sick! Don't necessarily just follow Google maps like we did!

Yew cottage was beautiful, comfortable and spacious.

We had everything we needed in the kitchen and even cooked a roast dinner! I’d read that certain things weren’t provided like tea towels and oven gloves but these were there for our use. One useful item would be to add a dishcloth to wipe the sides and dining table after meals. Ducks were frequent visitors to the delight of my daughter, they’d all gathered around one day whilst we were in the hot tub! The walk into town was not what we expected, I thought either it’d be a road or quite a straight path through fields but the main road has no pavement and too dangerous and the countryside walk had lots of left and right turns. Brant fell is a pleasant walk you can do from the cottage. The main improvement would be the washing machine and dryer, it took so long to dry our clothes and we were relying on it. I think Lake Lovers policy of guests having to take out the rubbish and strip all the beds needs to be reviewed, we did this at 4am before a 7-8 hour drive and have never had to do that before.
