We all loved the cottage from the minute we arrived.
There was such a lovely homely feel to the place. It was tastefully decorated throughout, with some really lovely paintings on the wall. I loved the quirky touches, the large reindeer sitting in a comfy chair in the lounge, and the group of teddy bears on the landing that varied in age. There were plenty of books to read or some jigsaw you could do. The kitchen was fully equipped to cater for all your needs, with an old table in the middle that you could sit at; the table brought back memories of sitting by a similar table with my grandma. All the rooms were larger than envisaged, so there was plenty of room to relax in. The master bedroom was huge with a triple aspect overlooking the road and the fields. The bathroom was large with a bath and a shower over the bath and there was also a separate shower room with toilet down stairs. The 2 twin rooms were large with plenty of wardrobe space. The lounge had 2 very comfy sofas, a large chair to sit on to watch the TV if you wanted to. There were reference books and maps in the room for guidance. The dining room had a large round table with 6 chairs.another comfy chair and sofa. The garden area was lovely a big table and chairs, where you could watch the birds at the feeders, in the meadow area leading down to the pond was an area with a BBQ and a summer house. The pond is fed by a stream running through it, there was a lifebuoy and a rowing boat. This is definitely a cottage where you can relax and feel right at home.

Arrived to find parking extremely tight , we have a mondeo and it was extremely challenging to park each day.
The photo of the property on the Sykes site shows the gate of the mill house next door and therefore is not accurate. We did not find the property clean and all air fresheners & plug ins were empty. The damp smell in the lower basement area was very strong and the owner was contacted on the 3rd day of our stay to inform them of this . The dehumidifier had not been emptied prior to the start date of our stay and was very stale water left there . The owners responded by providing common sense suggestions including open windows, I did not find this helpful and they did not recheck to see if our stay had improved. The shower head leaked and permanently dripped. The bedding was of a cheap quality and pillows were flat , this was a previous complaint by another family . There were no headboards on any bed. The toilet seat became loose during our stay . There were no seat pads for garden chairs. There was a previous guestâs underwear item left in the bottom of the main bedroom wardrobe which I informed the owner of, no response to this . The washing machine had black deposits , with 2 coins & a pen top in the door seal area which my husband had to clean before it was used and placed 2 dishwasher tablets in it on a cycle to clean it. The DVD remote did not work. I do not consider this property to a 4 star property and would strongly suggest you revisit this to reassess. Our previous Sykes properties have been superb, and therefore feel your reputation is at risk .

Completely the WRONG choice of accommodation for us.
To begin with, on our arrival, we surprised to find the pub was quite so close. We had read in the details that 'there may be some associated noise', and there most definitely was. We had obviously expected some, but what we had not expected was the endless foul language and expletives, which were impossible to get away from. In fairness, the owner did apologise for this on a couple of occasions. We were also frustrated that 'off road parking for one car' was advertised, but finding somewhere was a bit of a lottery as there as no actual designated space. Another disappointment was the lack of seating. Outside there was only a very uncomfortable wooden 'double bench' supplied with cushions that did not fit - not that we could have spent much time outside with the continual obscenities emanating from next door. And inside there was only the bed to sit on. However, the shower room was well-appointed, but the living area was cramped making catering difficult. Actually, there was only a small worktop with an integral sink in immediate proximity to electrical items, and we were more than a little concerned that water and electricity were so close together. In hindsight, maybe we should have spoken to the owner about our disappointments at the time, but we felt it would have achieved little. As the main problems were the property's location and lack of size, which could not be changed. We will not be staying there again.

We had a wonderful, relaxed and comfortable stay at Thorn Cottage over Easter.
Three adults, three children and a dog found that there was plenty to explore - games and books in every nook and cranny, spaces for playing hide and seek, games of cricket in the meadow. Our 7 year old daughter taught herself how to play a couple of simple tunes on the piano. Our dog is a little too much of an explorer to be able to be off the lead in the meadow (we should have named him Houdini!), but enjoyed long morning walks through the lanes. If youâre thinking of bringing a dog with you - be mindful of the hedge at the top of the meadow, itâs an escape opportunity! Short drives (or a hilly walk) to amenities in Chagford: Spar, pubs, greengrocer, clothes, information⦠We were able to get a few hikes of decent length with our three children. The porch made an excellent boot room upon our return and plenty of hot water for all to have a good shower. The facilities in the kitchen are rustic in a way that is charming, like taking a step back in time. But all mod cons are available, easy to find and use. The beds are extremely comfortable and we all took advantage by sleeping in only to be woken by the sound of birds, the occasional soft sound of hooves or the master thatcher arriving to re-thatch a neighbouring property. We all feel so grateful to have been able to stay at Thorn Cottage and have already recommended that our friends and family also spend holidays there.

We had a such a lovely time at this beautiful cottage.
Although there a a few things that should be mentioned. - The property is definitely too small for 6 people to stay. There may be 3 bedrooms, but the living room is only comfortable for 4 maybe 5 people if they would like to sit on the lap of each other, dining table hardly takes 4. - The shower is not suitable for people over 170cm, we had to sit in the shower to not bang our head - Parking is a bit tricky, but that was mentioned before and the neighbours were very nice to us All these things aren't that bad and are just our personal impression but what's need to be said is that the cottage definitely needs a good clean ! It was tidy at the first sight, but there are cobwebs everywhere, the kitchen front was sticky and the toilet definitely hasn't been cleaned before we arrived as they were stains and even hairs on the toilet seat. Apart from this it was a lovely stay, the flat is very well equipped. In the kitchen is everything you need and even more, cleaning products in Bath and kitchen and even a cage for the dog. The beds are comfortable, there are enough towels, the tiny little area outside is very nice and pet friendly, there are only short walks to the shops, playgrounds and the beautiful dog walking path. We definitely would come back again, as we really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful place.
