What our customers say about their holidays

    • Dawn - Verified booking

      What a perfect holiday!

From looking and booking, to arrival and departure all instructions were easy to follow and communications were excellent. Even a local road closure and re-route for easy travel were sent to us prior to arrival. There are covid - care measures in place and the cottage and grounds are immaculately kept. There was a lovely afternoon tea welcome pack with homemade Devon scones and clotted cream and milk in the fridge. Angela and Stuart are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them and they have thought of everything and more to ensure a relaxing and stress-less stay. The cottage is really well equipped with high quality furnishings & home wares - basically everything you'll need. Even surprised and relieved to find some scales as being diabetic, I have to weigh out my food and I'd forgotten to take some. Eco-friendly cleaning materials are provided as are Fairy liquid and Fairy non-bio washing pods to use as the properties utilise non mains water and waste treatment. There is also recycling facilities and waste bags supplied. There's a smart TV which you can use Netflix etc from your own account and good wifi signals. Also have laundry / ironing facilities etc. Honestly they've thought of everything. Everything is scrupulously clean, the beds are really comfortable and everything looks new. The cottage is in really pretty grounds, beautiful hanging baskets and flowers and own private patio and small garden, but you are welcome to use the field at the rear for sport (we played petanque & badminton - but it was too hot to do much more during our wonderful heat-wave week!) The electrically heated pool is well maintained, cleaned and serviced daily and is a great size for families. There is a covid- care rota system in place currently for the cottages to ensure safe and equally use of the pool. If you are going out for the day - ask the neighbouring cottage to swap or change times with you. We did and lazed around for a few days - so basically had the pool area to ourselves - heaven ! The cottages are also dog friendly and there's a big dog walking field just to the rear of the cottages as well as good walks nearby and although dog friendly, there's not one hair or doggy smell to be found anywhere. It's really, really clean. Its in a beautiful spot within easy access of Ottery-St-Mary, Exeter and beautiful beaches of Sidmouth, Exmouth, Sandy Bay and a little further the gorgeous Jurassic Coast. We're already planning to return...... if you're in any doubt about booking here - don't be - its gorgeous and you wont be disappointed. Thank you Angela and Stuart and Helpful Holidays - can't wait to visit again !

The owners were very helpful and communications good.

The Engine House was a little more remote than we had perhaps appreciated but it very quiet and had magnificent views from the gardens. The house was a little tardis and a good size. As it is set within the walls of the Quarry it was a little dark inside not helped by the weather! However there was lots of lighting throughout. At night it is pitch black so you really need a torch if you need the loo in the night and don't want to leave lights on. Absolutely wonderful for star gazing on a clear night though - we were blessed to have one of them! A few treats left in the fridge and on the side and a dog bed and blankets too. The bedrooms were well equipped with hanging space and chest of drawers but the bed was a little firm for our liking. Lots of blankets and extra pillows too. A well stocked kitchen with plenty of pots, pans and utensils for self catering. The dishwasher wasn't working whilst we were there but that had been communicated to us and an engineer did come out to try and fix it. A lovely bathroom with great shower over the bath. Open plan living including a TV, dining room table, a sofa and chair so seating for 4 adults which was comfortable. Good WiFi and a stock of games, books and DVDs on the side to choose from. We had a terrific storm whilst we were there which tripped the electrics. We tried fixing it but to no avail and Steven and Lucie came straight out when we called them. We unfortunately had to cut our stay short due to family illness back home and Lucie was very kind in her response. There were some nice walks from the Engine House and we enjoyed a walk up to the Quarry and learning the history of the building. A nice get away from it all holiday but i think a little too remote for us to return. However we would recommend to friends for a cosy short break in beautiful surroundings.

Slight confusion upon arrival (unfortunately, in the dark) as the second signpost up to the cottages had been dislodged in the recent bad weather but one phone call put us right!

Lovely friendly welcome from Angela who very kindly popped straight out to welcome us, get the key from the safe, open the front door and turn on the lights. Once inside the cotttage was warm, cosy, comfortable and extremely clean. Everything we could possibly have needed, and more, was there for us. The online photos and previous reviews were spot on! Our little dog was with us and all the facilities for him were absolutely fine too and we must agree with other reviewers that there was no sign of any previous canine visitors! Note to other dog owners: We had some dreadful weather during our weekend away and would like to advise about nearby Cranbrook Park. It's less than 10 minutes drive away, easy parking in the local streets, loads of open grassy space, meandering gravel paths and doggy bins. Perfect!

Superb views towards Exeter and a lot further.

A footpath at the bottom of the garden and a within a hundred metres or so there are more stunning views in the opposite direction to the south west and towards the sea. There are other footpath walks within a short walk from the house, some through woodland and some over hills. We walked up the lane a little way and down a lane to the left and saw two red deer one evening. A reasonably short distance from Exeter and also lots more exciting places to visit. In the other direction 10 - 20 minutes drive took us onto Dartmoor. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. There is normally a lot of wildlife to see in the field opposite but this had just been cut for hay and we didn't see much. An idea would be to have a map of the footpaths in the cottage.

We had a great break and Whimple Cottage was very warm and comfortable.

We appreciated the delicious scones that were left for us and the fresh flowers in the cottage. When I booked the cottage, the swimming pool was a factor in my decision to book. Fortunately, I asked the owner a question about it and was told it was closed for the winter. This was disappointing and to be fair to the owner, she did offer to cancel the booking free of charge. We declined this offer and obviously did stay at the cottage. I think it should be very clear to anyone considering booking that the pool is closed during the winter. If I hadn't mentioned it, we would have arrived expecting it be to open and we would have been very disappointed. It was a shame because it annoyed me before we arrived and in fact the cottage was great.
