What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

We are almost never negative about our stays anywhere and have been coming to Port Isaac for many years.

We have also stayed at this property before and have always found it comfortable and pleasant. But this time there were minor niggles, and it wouldn't be fair not to mention them. We arrived a little early and the last surviving member (in terms of employment I understand) of the wonderful local John Bray's team was finishing some maintenance task upstairs. Kath noticed a dearth of wine glasses in the cupboard (no comment on who noticed...) and the gentleman very promptly returned with a new set, which was very kind of him. We missed the Welcome Pack that has always greeted us before. Perhaps someone had just forgotten to place it. The main heating control has been changed and is much simpler to use than the previous one. But there is no instruction in the property to tell guests how to use it. Fortunately, the maintenance gentleman had yet to leave and showed us how to do it before he left - again very kind. It probably doesn't matter, and I certainly didn't touch it, but the wi-fii 'booster' box in the bedroom seems to be indicating - by the colour of its light - that it has yet to be 'paired' with the main box in the lounge. It also took me two days to realise that the bin allocated to White Horses had NOT actually been rivetted shut due to some change of procedure, but was actually locked. I eventually realised that it had a cabinet lock on it, presumably to prevent unauthorised access. These panel locks are fairly standard on coaches, buses and electricity cabinets, and I doubt that neighbouring bins use anything different, so I cannot imagine this system preventing access to a guest from a neighbouring property. Once I realised this was the case, I tracked down the unnoticed key hanging by the front door and knew its function. It would have been a bit quicker if some information was available in the introduction document to the property that pointed a guest towards the key and its purpose. It didn't change things though, because the lock was seized solid, possibly with rust. I was devoid of any of my tools that might have allowed me to apply more force to turn it, so I never got it open. On the other hand I might have broken it, so it was perhaps a blessing that I didn't come as 'tooled-up' as in previous years. I did report the lock problem directly to the Port Isaac office and it was noted down, but the issue was never attended to whilst we were there and I had to use another (unnamed) bin for our general rubbish. I hope it didn't belong to another property and someone had just forgotten to put the name of their property on it. I always felt vaguely guilty every time I visited and continued to use it. The Covid panic caused widespread collateral damage that was unexpected. Too much government-enforced inactive time locked in our houses (cells?), and rather too much beer for many of us too, saw some of us gain unwanted weight. I regret now finding myself in that category and found the shower access (always narrow anyway) has become something of a challenge to negotiate. I doubt if very large people will comfortably get through the narrow gap left by this particular type of shower door. I've fitted shower doors and think there must be a better choice of door somewhere that will afford easier access to this shower - just a suggestion. While I'm on that subject, I've also fitted showers too. The wand-type shower head in use works perfectly well - I fitted something similar in my shower - but mine is meant as a supplementary 'mobile' shower. It acts in addition to the fixed overhead main rainfall shower. I'm sure something like that should really have been fitted here. These wands are usually there as an addition to the main shower head, and to assist with access to one's nooks and crannies... gain, just a thought. Sorry to sound critical. We had a good stay and only left a day early because of the weather. But some things could perhaps be improved a little, we think. Our apologies. John & Kath

Swallow cottage unfortunately was very disappointing.

Other than the area, which is stunning and quiet, and outwardly the building appeared to be absolutely gorgeous. Inside was dirty and not maintained. The instructions on the Sykes website contradicted those left in the property. Firstly, there was no key safe as stated. So we spent a while trying to discover how to get in. After a phone call to the agent we discovered ourselves that there is in fact no key safe. And the property was left open with the keys on the upstairs table. The instructions from Sykes contradicted what was left in the owners book of instructions. 9:30 departure on Sykes, 9 am in the book. No instructions for the laundry, which we did work out ourselves but didn't end up using as the directions were so aggressive and blunt inside that I didn't feel like lining their pocket. Dogs welcome, fully dog friendly on Sykes but in the book keep them on lead and don't leave them alone ( which I did speak to the owner about, as this was one of the stipulations of us actually booking here.) The property inside although beautiful was dirty, and we spent an hour cleaning before we could unpack. I would suggest having a word with the cleaner as this is not a standard that is expected. We also had an extra horror of someone else's dirty underwear in one of the main bedroom drawers which we had to dispose of. It was a warm week when we stayed and half of the windows don't open, the double glass doors which lead to the balcony don't open properly and felt like they we're going to drop off. No exaggeration. And the double doors to the small fenced balcony do not open at all, resulting in no air flow all week. The toilet seat was dropping off, again I spoke to the owner about this and was assured this would be fixed but it was left so I ended up rectifying it myself. You will not get any service here unless you walk about the property outside. This can't be helped but needs to be more transparently advertised. Don't expect to be able to order in here, as we found nowhere to deliver locally. Understandable with the location but also I feel should be advertised. Good points The property location is quiet and a short walk into Port Isaac itself which is beautiful, scenic but also very hilly so keep that in mind if you are physically challenged. The property has a decent kitchen, with a large electric cooker, dishwasher and fridge. The king bed is comfortable, although my teenager found the bed in the single room to be uncomfortable. The property itself is nestled on a farm which is quiet and pretty and you have the extras of chickens and ducks wandering around. It is quiet and overlooks the bay. Nearby there is a dog friendly field by the second car park to your right as you go into Port Isaac that is fenced in, just in case your pooch needs extra security. We didn't end up spending a lot of time indoors due to all of the problems, and didn't get the impression from previous correspondence that anything would be rectified so made do for the week. But going forward we would not rebook unless standards met the price band paid. I am a travel blogger and hate to have to write negative reviews but renters need to know what to expect when they book a property.

We have stayed at White Horses several times now and always enjoy the position and the privacy afforded when there.

Only the Signal Post lies beyond it, so if nobody is in residence at that property, there is no foot or vehicular traffic at all past White Horses. If you have good weather you can sit out front in the morning, and in the little courtyard at the side in the afternoon. So it's very nice. A point of confusion might lie with a bin in the communal bin enclosure that is marked clearly for 'White Horses', but is actually locked. We did report this two years ago and someone said they'd deal with it, but it is still there and in the same condition. You can use the other bins, but it may fox someone new to the property. Not wishing to sound too negative - just suggestions really - but the mop head drops off at the merest hint of having to do some work, and so does the head of the loo brush in the downstairs washroom. Some new shelves have been fitted in the shower room upstairs, and that is good, but it would be just a touch more convenient if consideration was given to adding some more near the washbasin too. A corner shelf unit (suitable for a shower) would definitely help those using the shower, especially if they are getting on a bit and struggle to bend down for the soap and shampoo whilst in there. The shower is a bit of a strange setup in that it uses the movable 'wand' style head as the main shower head, whereas they tend to be a supplementary addition to a main head. I have not seen that setup before. However, it does the job just fine I suppose. it is just unusual. Controlling the temperature at various power levels is a little more tricky however. A millimetre or two either way takes you very quickly between the 'Arctic' and the 'Napalm' settings... The biggest negative with the shower though - especially for those of us who are now (unwillingly) of larger proportions - is the shower door. I'm sure there will have been a three-leaf sliding shower door available somewhere, when it was fitted (although that might even now be a special order) but it would have been a better option to create a larger opening. I could have done without it, because every day of use just reminded me that I need to get some weight off. So if you're a bit on the large side, just bear in mind that you may need to squeeze yourself through the gap! Finally, the TV would benefit by being fitted on a swinging arm, rather than flat against the wall where it is. It isn't in the best place to be viewed from everywhere in the room. If not that, then fixed diagonally across the corner of the room might give everyone a better view. Most of those are relatively minor issues, but we think the property might benefit if they were implemented. That all sounds terribly negative, I suppose, but it's a lovely little property really, with a large parking bay just metres away and that, on its own, in Port Isaac anyway, is a HUGE plus! Also, there are four Swarco electric vehicle chargers just a 100 metres away on the car park. If you're an early riser like me, and can plug the car in somewhere between midnight and 09.00hrs the following morning, there are no car parking charges to pay. Bonus points for that too! John

      We really enjoyed our stay.

We liked the accommodation. The layout was good with the upside down side the Juliet balcony was lovely. The views are amazing. However, our journey in to the accommodation and finding you was difficult. The postcode was incorrect on one of our emails and it took us on a nice little jaunt through the town to a farmers field over the other side of Port Port Isaac to somebody else’s farm.He said it’s not the first time this has happened. The description on the email was accurate, but we were following the postcode, in the email unfortunately this led us to go to the wrong place. The cottage was nice everything was set up well getting into the property was good and easy with codes and keys ect. The information that was given prior to the holiday was helpful and supportive and made us feel prepared for a holiday in addition the pack of information inside with local things to do was useful. Some of the information was conflicting so in one information pack it said check out time was 9:30. Another one said 10. Another part said nine on a handout so there was different information about checking out we went with 9:30 we went with the email that we had been sent from yourselves. The cleaning equipment provided was great. More than adequate parking a great location for day trips out around Cornwall. A really good base to use for exploring Cornwall. Nice to have the animals outside the cottage was lovely. Unfortunately the bathroom did have mould on the door and in the shower and smelt damp and unclean. This was unfortunate as it did permeate around the lower bedroom. We recognise that there is no window in that room, and that doesn’t help with the damp, and that has intern made the door damp and mouldy. The fan stays on for a long time and I think this helps airrate but doesn’t adequately sort out the damp situation. And around the back of the toilet and tiles smelt of urine, so it could’ve done with a better clean. An air freshener was provided, but this did little other than add another smell on top of the unclean, damp smell. We are certainly looking to book with you again next year, a bigger accommodation and bringing the rest of our family to stay in the Rock. overall, we found the service from you as a company excellent. Very informative and efficient service from yourselves and with a few tweaks to accurate post code information and clean accommodation. It would’ve been 10 out of 10.
