What our customers say about their holidays

    • Judy - Verified booking

This booking was a late change of venue so not initially chosen by me for our stay in Aldeburgh.

I wrote a short comment in the Visitors’ Book of the cottage before the end of my stay and I deliberately did not mention any of the things that we had found negative as I know how damaging that can be - the fast, noisy and frequent traffic, the potholed access to parking, the lack of space to do anything on the kitchen worktops, the paucity of equipment in the kitchen, the tight turn in the steep stairs and dangerously short distance from the landing to those stairs, the general shabbiness of it all, the awful smell in my bedroom; we had been grateful to have rescued our trip so were prepared to take what was available. However, I felt it right to contact Sykes directly about a very specific issue, the bed. I was absolutely disgusted to see huge stains on my mattress as I was packing up to leave, the cleaners MUST have noticed that there were NO STAINS on any of the mattress protectors or bedding from our stripped beds so this stain already existed and had been covered up… ugh. Had the cleaners not reported this before now or was this just ignored? I took photos of the stains and it looks disgusting. I'm happy to share these photos. The owner offered me a small reduction on a future booking and were apparently already addressing the issues I raised - thereby acknowledging that standards were below par. In the light of gesture of goodwill from the owner, I said that I would prefer to have a small reduction from THIS visit - I have no intention of staying there again. The owner "is not looking" to offer this. I've asked Sykes to escalate this to their Senior Management (as I booked it through the them). This request had been completely ignored. Not only that but you keep asking me to write a review - so here it is. Sykes seem to be keen on ticking boxes and getting feedback but not so keen on actual good customer service. This experience does not merit even one star.

There was no guest guide which is usually provided in Best of Suffolk properties, so no info about bin collection dates or appliance manuals.

The manuals would be useful as the washing machine and electric radiators aren't intuitive. The washing machine door sticks and you have to push it hard to click in so the machine starts. The online manual wasn't helpful in solving the error beeps. A concern is that the timer on the microwave doesn't work - instead of counting down, it stays at the time you set it to, so overheating and burning may occur. No vacuum cleaner. We didn't attempt to remove the bung from the chimney to light the fire (wood was provided) as there was no instructions or place to put it, nor anyway to clean up the likely soot. The kitchen and back door don't have blinds or privacy film so bear that in mind when using the downstairs back bathroom, accessed past both windows. If you're thinking of using the outhouse for bike storage, note that there is no lock, nothing to fix your own lock to (the access door or inside the outhouse). Overall, a pleasant place to stay but don't feel it is worth the full price advertised for a non-half term week in mid-October (£900, it was reduced to £500) as it is not of the standard I would expect. Best of Suffolk properties used to be of a higher baseline standard.

We had a great time at The Hollies.

It was well equipped and the kids loved table tennis. The benches at the dining table were a little precarious for the kids (aged 9, 10 and 12) when they tried to pull them closer to the table. One in particular would rock forwards if not careful. A couple of normal chairs would be helpful for ease of use for those of us who are quite arthritic. The round handles on the doors were really tricky to grip and turn for my arthritis - not a complaint, just if we stay there again, I will take some sort of arthritis aid for opening such doors. I would love to see some extra drawer storage in the main bedroom as there were only 3 small drawers and then just hanging space in the wardrobes. Also, the beds are quite high, which is fine, except for the shorties amongst us, it’s a bit of an issue to sit and get socks on, so a chair in each bedroom would be really helpful. The location was great and peaceful. Lovely beaches nearby. Really enjoyed our stay and would consider returning in the future.

Fantastic cottage, very well equipped and furnished to a high standard with quality fixtures and fittings. Very spacious and bright - the web site photos really are true! There was plenty of crockery and cutlery, so you didn't have to pop the dishwasher on after every single meal. Comfy lounge furniture so everyone could gather round to watch the lovely big TV together. Beds were really comfy - not too hard like you find in many rental properties! For the dogs - it was great to be able to just open up the patio door to let them into the garden and for proper walks, big field just at the back of the cottage and lots of other quiet lanes and tracks to follow from the door. Having laminate flooring made it easy to keep swept and clean up after walks. Good pubs close by in Snape. Beaches at Aldeburgh and Southwold brilliant for walking alongside. We had a fabulous week and would highly recommend.

It is a very spacious and homely cottage in a beautiful spot, situated within a short walk to local shop, pub and rail station.

The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. We were fortunate enough to be able to spend most of our time lounging outside on the large decking and made use of the bbq provided (charcoal required). The open plan kitchen/dining area is ideal for families/groups but we were a little surprised on arrival to find that the bin and dishwasher hadn’t been emptied. We were unable to find the grill pan in either oven. Fans for the upstairs bedrooms would’ve been a welcome addition during the hot weather. There is an animal disposal facility at the end of the lane and although the trucks do pass the house quite early in the morning and there was an occasional unpleasant smell, this was infrequent and certainly didn’t spoil our holiday. A minor issue with a smoke alarm was rectified promptly. Thank you. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in this very pleasant cottage. Thank you
