What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rosalind - Verified booking

The cottage is in a good location but in need of some TLC.

The furnishings are tired and the mattresses are very saggy The fire extinguisher in the kitchen is out of date and it looks as though the fire blanket has been removed and re stuffed into its container. The tabs are not in the right place for it to be used properly. No appliances have been PAT tested. The microwave is in a poor condition. It is rusty inside at the back and side. The interior paint is peeling off. The stair carpet from the back door up to the sitting room is dirty, worn and wrinkled on some steps. The carpet on the landing is very worn. The main bedroom has plastic tubs sticking out from underneath it which catch your feet as well as looking bad. The mattress is very sagging and lumpy The bed frame creaks and squeaks- the bolts need tightening. I stayed in this bed by myself. I would not liked to have shared it with anyone. The duvet was very heavy and dense. There was a stain on it when I took the cover off at the end of the stay as requested. The mattresses on the single beds are also due for replacement. We came to Whitby to attend a funeral. We needed to hang up our clothes. The only wardrobe was full of bedding and other stuff. - this and all the stuff under the bed could have be stored in the downstairs cupboard and locked away. The chairs in the sitting room are also past their used by date. The seat cushion foam is very thin and you can feel the hard frame when sitting. The pleather is wrinkled because the cushions are worn out. Outside the small yard at the back was dirty with some rubbish and an old cloth on the floor. Long Steps to the cottage were very dirty with litter, dog poo and water leaking from a pipe. I realise these don’t belong to you but you should contact the council/ neighbours about their condition. Over the years we have rented various properties around Whitby and sadly this one was a disappointment.

      Abraham’s Cottage was great.

Comfortable, cosy and spotlessly clean and well presented. The little Christmas tree was a nice touch as well. The cottage has a combi boiler, heating was excellent and there was plentiful hot water. The living room was comfortable and the ground floor of the cottage is very spacious. The little extra sitting room was a great place for our dog’s basket and the utility area was handy for all of his towels, leads, food etc. We didn’t use the front bedroom as we found the fitted wardrobes over the bed claustrophobic. Maybe that is just us! The back bedroom was very pleasant. The kitchen was pretty well equipped and there is plenty of worktop space. Overall there was plenty of crockery and cups. We were a wee bit surprised that there wasn’t a teapot (in Yorkshire?!?) and the only coffee making facility was a tiny cafetière. These would make nice additions. A four slice toaster would also have been nice....especially if there were more than two of you. Just a couple of little details, otherwise the facilities were very good indeed. It’s just a short walk into the centre of Whitby and there are pubs and a great fish and chip shop within just a couple of minutes walk. The allocated parking space was a huge bonus. We have a VW Camper Van and often allocated parking is either height restricted or only suitable for a small car so it was great to find a full size unrestricted space for our use. A very nice cottage in a fantastic location.

Disappointing stay and unlikely to book again with Sykes.

The cottage was not clean with dust & cobwebs, black mould on the cracked bathroom tiles & cracked, broken and dirty bath side, no hot water from the taps only the shower - also the shower hose broken. I had to boil the kettle to wash the pots. Exposed wiring to a light fitting and the ceiling boards ?filler hanging down. The beds were uncomfortable, albeit the bedding and towels were laundered. The carpets threadbare and ?tears covered with masking tape, you could feel the sharp carpet grippers when using the stairs. Sadly the cottage smelled foisty and damp and the peeling plaster/paint not repaired or the damp in the second floor bedroom cleaned off the wall. I would never normally give a poor review I would just put it down to 'one of those things', but this week I had my grandchildren with me as a seaside treat & they said the same things, my granddaughter giving it a 1 out of 5 as we left on Friday. It's a real shame because the cottage could be a little gem of a place if it was well maintained and spruced up.

Couldn't really fault this place, not that I would want to anyway.

I contacted the owner Andy in advance of my arrival and he was extremely helpful and accommodating. Went for a couple of days' walking on the Cleveland Way/Cinder Track with a pal and we both had an excellent time in Whitby. After a long walk, I have to say that the shower in the house is absolutely brilliant - really powerful to wash away the aches and pains! Location is great, just a few minutes' walk from the town centre but far enough not to be disturbed by the hustle and bustle. The parking space is a bonus as it looks like Whitby could be awkward when busy. Saw a couple of reviews moaning about the proximity of the boatyard but I honestly had no issue with any noise etc. The rear of the house backs onto the street heading into the town centre, but again it wasn't a problem. Would absolutely stay here again if I should be in the area.

Really enjoyable stay at Cairns Cottage.

Location absolutely perfect for us, 10 minute walk to the Abbey, steady incline rather than the 199 steps. Great views over the harbour. 5 minute walk to the main bridge in Whitby and a bit further for the beach. Pub at the bottom of the steps (please not for elderly or disabled the steps are very tricky with luggage and without so wouldn’t recommend). Property itself does need some maintenance, as per previous feedback, the towel holder in the top bathroom needs fixing as well as the toilet seat. The duvets aren’t the best and would recommend replacing them as they rolled up inside the duvet cover. Oven could maybe do with a deep clean but not too bad. Seating in the living room is ok but not that comfortable. Overall we would stay again and with the minor adjustments/improvements it would make it even better. Thanks.
