Get away from it all with our Whitby holiday cottages

Looking out over the wild North Sea, the historic seaside town of Whitby is the perfect place for a cottage getaway. Offering idyllic natural beauty, unique historical sites and classic seaside charm, it is no wonder that visitors have been flocking to this gem of a holiday destination for centuries.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday scouring the boutique shops that line the cobbled streets in the centre of Whitby or prefer to head out to the moors in search of rare wildlife, you're guaranteed to be surprised by what you find here.

Given its coastal location, Whitby is also the perfect spot to enjoy water sports, a relaxing day at the beach or some traditional fun and games along the Victorian pavilion.

If you're looking to book a short break to recharge your batteries or want to make the most of everything on offer over a couple of weeks, our selection of beautiful Whitby holiday cottages is just what you need to complete your trip.

Why choose a Whitby weekend break or staycation?

Whitby in beautiful North Yorkshire is a treat to visit any time of year.

It's one of the most popular destinations on the Yorkshire Coast, and the historic seaside town has something for everyone.

The town is most famous for its connection to the legendary Count Dracula. In the classic vampire novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula arrives in England on a ship, which washes up on the Yorkshire Coast. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by Whitby Abbey and the atmospheric cemetery in the churchyard at St Mary's Church.

Feeling energetic? Climb the 199 steps through cobbled stones and up a cliff to see the incredible Whitby Abbey for yourself. These steps were famously featured in Dracula, and the views you'll be treated to at the top are well worth the effort. The grounds are dog-friendly, and you can spend a happy few hours enjoying a picnic, wandering through the haunting abbey remains, and taking in the spectacular view.

Exploring the town of Whitby is an utter delight. The cobbled streets make you feel like you've stepped back in time, and there are plenty of lovely shops, cafes, and restaurants to pop into. The streets and alleys are charming and narrow, with lots of hidden treasures buried in antique shops to discover.

Planning on visiting Whitby around Christmas? You'll be treated to twinkling lights and gorgeous decorations in all the shop windows, making the whole town feel like Santa's grotto.

If you're looking for a more traditional seaside holiday, Whitby delivers on every level.

The Victorian-era Whitby pavilion always has something great going on, including theatre, festivals and art events. And, of course, you'll find all the trappings of a quintessential British seaside town, from charming little boutiques and gift shops to amusement arcades and tea rooms, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the country. Make sure you bring your appetite!

There's also the beautiful Whitby Harbour to add to your list, with its charming harbourside cottages surrounding the water. This harbour was once famous for its success in the whaling industry, but today, you can join a boat trip and have a scenic tour into Whitby Bay.

While you're there, why not try your hand at a spot of crabbing? Trying to catch crabs has been a favourite pastime for years, and the best place to catch one is next to the swing bridge that separates the harbour from the old town.

Whitby is also famous for being the home of James Cook, also known as Captain Cook, the man who charted the coast of New Zealand and Australia. Captain Cook is renowned as being one of the most accomplished explorers of all time, and you can learn more about him at the Captain Cook Museum.

We've only scratched the surface of the many things to do in this beautiful Yorkshire coastal town. To discover more, stay in one of our beautiful Whitby self-catering properties and enjoy a well-earned break in one of our favourite UK holiday spots.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jeanette - Verified booking

By far the most immaculate and up to date property we've ever stayed in .

Beautiful decor, everything new, spotless modern kitchen and bathroom and the cottage was very warm and comfortable. I walked in and literally went..."wow". All modern appliances and really happy and comfortable here for our short break. Good to be on one level too and parking space so close to property as one of us has mobility problems. Also some pleasant outdoor space and furniture , also washing line with pegs and iron and board all provided. The dog walking fields are fantastic too as I could literally just take her a decent walk from the door. Only gripe was I found the proximity to main road difficult as the noise of traffic was an issue for me but not my partner who it didn't bother at all....to be fair I should have realised this but it was a busier road than I was expecting. Also walking to the Spar is a little bit scary as no proper footpath but it is literally only 5 minutes walk which is brilliant. Very minor issues with cottage were absence of a bottle opener/Cork screw but friendly lady at reception helped us with that and said to leave it in drawer in cottage which we did. Also some salt and pepper either in sachets or in the empty cruet pots in cupboard would have been really welcome. We had to buy dishwasher tablets as not one provided ...but we left half a dozen to help the next occupants. But these are minor points and just our experience....not criticisms just niggles. Overall though honestly this cottage was pretty spot on and well located for touring area and highly recommended!

We had an absolute 5 * experience and loved every minute at Plum Tree Cottage and it excedeed all expectations prior to arrival.

The photo's do not do this beautiful Cottage justice. Can't wait to return. On arrival we had a fantastic welcome pack including Coffee, Tea, sugar, yummy chocolate brownies and biscuits and a bowl of chocolates in the sitting room. There were also treats for our dog Bella, doggy towels, poo bags and fresh water awaiting our arrival for her. The cottage was spotlessly clean throughout and the shower was the best we have EVER had!! The location was perfect and our enclosed garden was beautiful and perfectly maintained and a pleasure to sit in of an evening after lots of busy day's of walking and visiting our favourite places. Just 2 minutes walk at the bottom of the garden was a stunning little train station which took us to Whitby for a few hours. My partner loved the bay window in the sitting room and spent lots of time looking at the birds and other wildlife. One highlight was watching the ducks come waddling across for food at breakfast time. I honestly can't praise Plum Tree Cottage enough. The only downside for some may be having no WiFi, but for me it was rather nice not having phone calls and messages.

      Lovely little cottage.

Great location near to whitby, beautifully decorated inside. Would have liked some salt and pepper in the pots and maybe some kitchen spray so we could wipe the worktops down. There was small amount of road noise in the bedroom but not enough to bother us. Had a lovely weekend all in and would stay again. One negative was the shower on Saturday morning. The shower itself is great comes with 2 heads a waterfall type one and a regular head both plenty of power. But on turning the shower on the smallest of the heads instantly drenched me much to my surprise. My immediate reaction was to close the door. I then had to open the door to try and turn it off and ended up soaked to my skin, water all over the walls and floor and soaking the toilet rolls. My wife though it was hilarious me not so much. I tried to dry out my Pj's For the night time but they were still wet. Not the best start to my day!

Having just spent a lovely week at Plum Tree Cottage, we wish to congratulate alan and Karen on getting it spot on.

Set in scenic and tranquil Castleton, Plum Tree Cottage nestles in the hillside (even sheep occasionally wander by!). Its actually a lovely 2 year old one level bungalow with all home comforts thought of. Plenty of crockery and cutlery, lovely bathroom plus torches and binoculars for bird watching at breakfast too. the sitting room is cosy in the evenings whilst the little garden catches the sun for tea and cake. Alan and Karen left us newspaper, milk, cookies and chocolate which was a nice touch. The location is ideal for visiting the many picturesque villages (once you’ve driven over the gorgeous moors) such as pickering, Helmsley, goathland. a visit to Whitby is a must too. we shall return to this wonderful home from home.

Just returned from another totally amazing stay at Plum Tree Cottage.

Once again everything was perfect. Clean and cosy and the biscuits and cake were most appreciated on arrival. The last review on here was quite unnecessary. The description of Plum Tree Cottage clearly states the steps down to the cottage. These are shallow and very accessible. We are in our 50's and had no problems what so ever. Alan & Karen just leave guests to enjoy their holiday unless you need them. We had no trouble with our Internet at the cottage at all and could make and receive calls without going to the top of the hill. Can't praise this place enough!! Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at Plum Tree, we'll be back next year.
