What our customers say about their holidays

    • Amanda - Verified booking

The flat is a little hard to find, even with the owner’s directions, as there is no name sign on the road.

Parking in front of the flat obscures the view, so after unloading it is best to use the owner’s car park and walk up through their garden. There may be washing hung up in front of the flat, which is not clear from the pictures, and people regularly walk past the front. Everything is on the ground floor and as there are 2 bedrooms facing the front this could be inconvenient when dressing. There is a flat above, but we only heard occasional footsteps. An issue with the wifi was quickly resolved when the owners were made aware of it. The furnishings are generally comfortable but a little tired and some of the kitchen equipment, eg the bread knife, could usefully be replaced. The laundry bag for bed linen was nowhere to be found and was brought round by the owner as we were about to leave. Towels were provided, contrary to what it says in the listing, though some of them were well worn. The flat is well located for walks from the front door and there are excellent local bus services, which we used on several days. In general it is a good base for exploring the area, but not ideal if you want to rest quietly and enjoy the view.

The location of Bramble cottage was perfect for access to the Lake district & the local area.

It was clean & warm but we were disappointed with the general level of decor inside. The lounge area was outdated & not very comfortable, the kitchen could do with some modernisation (the wallpaper & china are from the 50s?) plus the pots & pans were limited - only 1 frying pan for example. The back room smelt of damp & the heating didnt work so we closed the doors & didnt use this space. Several light bulbs were also out around the cottage - nothing significant to warrant contacting the owner but just gives a sign of lack of attention to detail. The bedrooms were clean, linen was lovely. The showers were hot & powerful but the bathrooms are dated & there was rust on the towel rail in the bathroom & a broken shower tray repaired with tape! In line with other cottages listed by Sykes I was underwhelmed. However, it did not spoil our week & I would look at Sykes again but will be more stringent on vetting a listing in future. Thanks

The cottage location is absolutely wonderful.

It’s within walking distance of Bassenthwaite Lake and only a short drive from Derwent Water. The views are spectacular and it’s well connected with bus routes. Being able to use the garage to store a bike was so helpful. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The cottage was comfortable and a pleasant base to explore the local area from. There is a great supply of books and games in the little games room. The kitchen is well equipped but would benefit from some additional trays and pans. Parking was either right in front of the cottage which was great for unloading or in a slightly more accessible car park at the front of the property. We found it hard to properly dry clothing/towels/swimwear on days when the weather wasn’t dry enough to hang things out but in good weather they dried easily on the line. Excellent value for money in a wonderful location. We had a great stay - thank you!

We had a really nice stay.

The place is setup nicely and much bigger than expected so plenty of space for whatever you bring with you. The beds are comfy and the showers really good. There is easy access to Bassenthwaite for water sports and access to the hills behind and around for walking and running. The only thing that might confuse some people is that despite the name "Bramble Cottage" it isn't a standalone cottage, it is a set of rooms with other accommodation above and to the side. You are completely separate from any other visitors though.

Great property in a great location.

Very spacious and comfortable all round with outstanding views. Only let down by what seems to be a lazy and lax approach to customers from “owner” ie: a token welcome file with local, relevant and important information would have been nice. No previous customer recommended eateries or walks from “here”. No emergency contact numbers docs/dentist or taxis/ buses. Not even a convenient wi-fi code. We can glean information from Google etc but it’s nice to feel welcomed and appreciated. Would still recommend.
