What our customers say about their holidays

    • Elizabeth - Verified booking

The Stone Cross Mansion building is impressive and exceptionally well renovated.

The flat itself was also nicely presented and the view from the roof terrace is stunning. There were a couple of small problems when we arrived - a bed not made up as a double as requested and a mess left in the oven by previous occupants. Both these were dealt with quickly and courteously. The flat was clean and had most things necessary for our stay, but there were some problems. Although the bed was comfortable there was a continuous humming noise from the boiler cupboard which I found disturbing at night. The coffee maker didn’t work and I suspect the capsules that were left were not the correct size for the machine. The sash windows were very stiff and it was a struggle to open and close them. The biggest problem we had was complete lack of Wi-Fi signal in the lounge. The television didn’t pick up any signal, so we were unable to access anything except real time terrestrial programmes and there was very little to watch. No Freeview, so no i player or itv hub; no Netflix, no Amazon Prime. We brought the problem to the attention of the owners during our stay but no solution was found. This really needs to be addressed. The flats are not cheaply priced and finding that the facilities that are advertised are not in fact available is disappointing. On balance I would say that if you are fit and strong enough to deal with the windows and keen to transport food up two flights of steep stairs to the dining table on the roof terrace, then this flat is for you. But if you want to sit and watch television in the evenings then it probably isn’t. I wouldn’t book this particular flat again, but I might consider one in the same building if the problem with the Wi-Fi is resolved.

This was a lovely comfortable and spacious apartment.

The house had character. Modern interior inkeeping with its historical exterior. Comfortable bed and well equipt kitchen. The owners parents were on-hand to help, when I could not find the instructions to operate the washing machine. (Someone had put the instruction leaflet in a cupboard rather than back in the folder.) They were very helpful and friendly. The location is lovely for walking. It is also close to the railway station. We had a good stay. It was not really a holiday as we had our bathroom refurbished into a wet room and needed to move out for a few days. We could not move too far from home as my husband had a medical appointment at Furness General. We did make a very good break out of our stay. Only downside was the lack of Wi Fi. Fortunately I had enough data on my phone, but my husband did not have much. We should have checked. I just assume everywhere has Wi Fi these days. Other than that the place was marvelous.

If you are someone who relies on internet or phone, this is probably not the place for you as there is no WiFi (this is stated in the property listing) and the phone signal can be a bit patchy.

If, however, you want some peace and quiet and to get away from it all, it's just the place! Large airy rooms, well equipped and spotlessly clean. Nice to sit on the bench in the garden and listen to the birds without the background soundtrack of traffic. Happy to spot a heron in the small stream at the bottom of the garden. Lovely walks nearby with Holker Hall just 10/15 minute walk away and definitely worth a visit. 10 minutes to the railway station if you want to venture further afield, leaving the car behind. A couple of minor points. Some of the local attraction leaflets were very old! We put some new ones in. There is a washing machine if needed, but nowhere to hang to dry. Don't like using a dryer unless absolutely necessary. Maybe a small airer could be provided. All in all we had a great stay and would definitely recommend and revisit.

A very comfortable, clean and stylish apartment in a beautiful house.

The living room and kitchen are huge and very well equipped and though the bedroom is smaller it's perfectly adequate with a comfortable bed. The garden is lovely with a stream running through and to have parking is a definite bonus in a very small village. The village is very quiet, which is a treat after a day visiting some fairly busy places. It was our first visit to the Lake District and we loved the area and packed a lot in to our week, it is about 15 to 20 miles from the popular lakes and some can get very crowded with parking a problem. We felt that the lack of WiFi was a problem, especially when planning walks and trips. Please Sykes could you give the correct information about where to find the key safe! Apparently you have been told several times. Gave us ten minutes of panic before we found the correct place.

Absolutely stunning apartment in a great location.

Loads of space with everything a family could want, a separate upstairs lounge with a large TV for family movie nights and a small hideaway next to it for smaller kids to enjoy. The terrace is a great touch with wonderful views all round. Kitchen/diner well equipped, with space for those that want peace and quiet away from a TV. Kids loved the outdoor activities and equipment that was provided. Great showers in the bathrooms, powerful and no temperature fluctuations when used. Ulverston town is a mere 10 minutes walk away and for those that are more active the monument is a 40 minute trek away. Most of the southern lakes are accessible by car, Ambleside an hour's drive or a wonderful train and boat journey from Haverthwaite. Will definitely like to book again in the future.
