What our customers say about their holidays

    • Todd - Verified booking

Just prior to our arrival, we texted the owner our vehicle registration, but it appears that the owner never received our text, although, we did not get a message on our phone that the text was not delivered.

Without realizing that the owner did not receive our text, we continued to follow the instructions provided by Sykes, and we parked at the Otley Road car park. The next day, we received a fine for 50 pounds for parking without a valid parking pass. We texted the owner again, but we did not get a response. We also emailed Sykes, but we did not get a response either (we did not realize that the email from Sykes was from a no-reply email address). We ended up calling the housekeeper, who contacted the owner, who in turn contacted us. The owner claimed that he did not receive our text and suggested that we stop at the Sykes office across the street to see if they could help (which was probably the least helpful advice that we received). Upon describing our situation to the folks in the Sykes office, a Ms. Karen Smith (sp?) told us flatly that parking is between the renter and the owner and that Sykes has nothing to do with our parking situation. When I tried to explain that the instructions sent by Sykes in the email doesn't mention that parking is between the renter and the owner and that the instructions give the renter no recourse if problems should arise, Ms. Smith tersely reiterated that parking is between the renter and the owner and told us that Sykes would not help us in this regard. At this point, I asked for Ms. Smith's supervisor's name and contact information, and she refused to give me this information. Ms. Smith's dismissiveness and curt, rude responses were off-putting. If that's the kind of employee that Sykes wishes to retain, I will never choose to use Sykes or any of its affiliates in the future. The back and forth between the Sykes office, the owner, and the parking authority really tainted our experience in Keswick. No one should have to deal with that kind of hassle while they are on vacation, and further, if they do have to deal with it, they should be able to get some assistance from the rental company. All we received, in my opinion, is the attitude that Skyes does not care, and we did not matter. Ms. Smith is the reason for that. All in all, the parking snafu cost us four hours of our time, and 37.20 pounds in fines and costs. Bottom line - Sykes needs to do better with its availability and transparency. If one of the renters is having a problem, Sykes needs to provide a valid email, phone, or some other contact information, in case of problems. Skyes also need to provide a bit more clear instructions for international travelers. My suggestion is to add "the owner at" to the email instructions with the country code for international travelers. For instance, the instructions could read like this, "Please text the owner at 044 07894783363 prior to your stay...." Finally, Sykes needs to have better skilled, more customer-oriented staff available to help deal with problems as they arise.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Glen Cottage: its location in the middle of nowhere was great, the views brilliant, the accommodation clean and the facilities good.

We enjoyed the four days we stayed in the Lake District very much and were rained on a lot (as you would expect) but also had periods of great weather too. There were a few things that could be better though: - the toilet was loose and it was a bit unnerving sitting on it at times. - we felt that the notices for dog owners left for us were somewhat blunt & abrupt. We, of course would look after the accommodation but to be told that we 'must' do this and 'must' do that did not set us up with a great feeling about the time there and stressed my wife more than it really needed to: rules are fine but please treat us as adults when it comes to keeping in line. - the description of the property could have been clearer. Whilst we were aware that it was a single storey, it was not made clear that part of the other rental property on site was in fact on top of our accommodation. There was significant noise from what I assume was an uncarpeted or hard floor above us every time people walked about or used the stairs. This was true of both sets of people using the accommodation so we assume it was the floors rather than the people. Fortunately, there was little noise during the night apart from the odd toilet flush(!) - the garden provided for us was very small and the grass very long - even though someone mowed the grass on the area reserved for the other accommodation, ours was left long meaning that it wasn't really practical to use the garden. Overall these are relatively minor quibbles but sorting them out would have resulted in a super score for the property.

The floorboards from Beckwood as so creaky.

. it's fine if there's no one there but unfortunately the place was full for the duration of my stay. The guests from the 3rd to 8th at Beckwood were a group of youngsters who were up until 1am crashing around upstairs which kept me awake. They had 5 cars with them and took up the whole parking area and even onto the grass. They also used all the hot water - I tried to shower at random times during the day but because there were so many of them, they'd used it all. The shower is also really challenging to control and very hot. I had to have it on low flow to keep it at a manageable temperature. The kitchen doors need changing as the dishwasher one looks so untidy but luckily doesn't affect function. I found the let very comfortable overall, the sofas were great, the bed was comfortable. Overall it was clean but I did use the hoover to improve on the rug cleanliness and the poor cleaner must have a challenging job as it hardly touches it - there was clearly a white dog staying previous! The WiFi was slow and I was hoping to complete some work whilst I was away but the WiFi inhibited my ability as it wouldn't open websites on my laptop. I would stay again, as it's the perfect base and minus the faults, I had an enjoyable time! But I would try to avoid it when Beckwood was full or ask the owners who is staying there to avoid people who stay up late!

      Lovely cottage.

The bedrooms were well furnished and the beds were all comfortable. The kitchen had everything needed. The lounge was lovely. The windows in the lounge and main bedroom were very difficult to open and had to be wedged to stay open. For an older couple this would be very difficult to do. The property was very warm almost stuffy so having a fan provided was very welcome. The parking whilst tight wasn’t too much of a problem. It would be useful if the spaces were fully marked out and painted on the ground. The difficulty of trying to speak to someone about a matter after our trip was a little worrying. I don’t feel confident if we had run into a major issue like missing keys or something during our trip we would have been able to get hold of anyone in good time. The number given was a landline and mostly automated. It kept repeating I should go online to resolve any problems we had. I had to leave a message and wait for someone to call me back. This wasn’t an issue this time, as our holiday had finished but imagine urgently needed assistance and there is no one available. To be honest that lack of support available would stop me booking again.
