What our customers say about their holidays

    • Baxter - Verified booking

We were a party of ten adults (four couples & two singles) and the cottage suited our requirements perfectly in early September.

The open plan living room/kitchen/dining room worked well for us and we didn't need to use the second sitting room, but it would be useful for a quiet room to go to for reading or relaxing. The cottage is well equipped with modern facilities and is located in a very quiet location with no light pollution- great for looking at the stars on a clear night. There is a useful outdoor terrace with seating for ten which was nice for afternoon tea or a glass of wine pre-dinner. The bunk bed room is not just for children (the owner's description referred to children sized beds) but we had an adult use the bottom bunk which is full size. There is plenty of off-road parking in the sloping drive. We brought our bikes & had two rides round the local area on quiet roads as well as good walking to the Broads. We ate out three times in Loddon which is about four miles away and used a local taxi firm (for ten of us this was £60 return in total in two taxis). We also did a boat ride on the Broads & had a day in Norwich (about 8 miles NW of the cottage). We also had lunch & a wine tasting at Chet Vineyards (an easy walk from the cottage) which was fun, but a little expensive at £50 pp. We also enjoyed a day out on the coast in Southwold- about forty minutes drive. We would highly recommend a stay at the cottage for a big group of friends or families. The only minor issues to mention are that if you plan on cooking a meal the evening you arrive, the Aga cooker takes a couple of hours or more to heat up. We couldn't initially find the key to the apartment in the garden, which was in the cupboard in the main house & the instructions about that were not obvious- the owner should have left them in the hallway (which is where the spare main front door key was located). We enjoyed our stay & we were blessed with lovely weather- thank you.

Had a lovely time here, it’s a nice place to stay and the location is good.

The double bed in the room without the en-suite is too small. Both our feet were hanging off the end. My daughter found the single bed in the small room really uncomfortable as the mattress isn’t great. It would’ve been better to have had a good sized double bed in the smaller double room and also the en-suite room which has the 2 twin beds. Didn’t really make sense to have twin beds in a master bedroom. The 2 twin beds in the annex are ridiculously small. Again either a full size double or 2 decent sized singles would be better. The heating situation wasn’t ideal as it went off at around 9:30am which is the time we’d be using bathrooms etc and upstairs got cold quite quickly and stayed cold until heating came back on late afternoon and no option to override the timer. Given it is winter, it would’ve been nice to keep the whole house warm as went spent a lot of time indoors. The garden was disappointing. Description states it’s fully enclosed, however it was unsuitable for our dogs as the fencing is so low and also had gaps in the main gate wire so our smaller dog could’ve got out and our larger dog could easily get over the main fence particularly as it sloped lower, nearer to the road. Perhaps sectioning off from the rear patio would be an idea to allow guests with dogs to let their dogs out in a secure section? We had to put our dogs on leads every time we let them out to go to the toilet which was really annoying, especially late at night. The kitchen area is lovely and well equipped, but cooking a meal for 8 in a single oven with only one shelf proved problematic. Appreciate there is the Agar however that takes 4 hours to heat up for cooking. The house was well maintained and really nice and clean but we wouldn’t stay here again due to the points mentioned above.

We absolutely loved it at Lanthorn Cottage.

The 200 year old cottage is lovely, and the long garden was perfect for our dog to run up and down with a ball. The summer house was used by us daily, for reading a book or watching an ipad in the lovely peaceful surroundings. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the living room was cozy in the evenings. The beach was a short 10 minute walk away, through a field with a public footpath, turning left as you come out of the cottage road onto Grub Street, and then turn right off of Grub Street when you see the opening of the field. There's a clear walkway through the field, and then walk along the back of the caravan park and keep heading towards the lighthouse (zoom in on google maps or google earth, you can clearly see the footpath). There is a Tesco about 15 minutes drive away, but we've been to Eccles on Sea previously so knew our way around the area. I would always say to people who are looking to book a holiday anywhere, to do your research before finally booking. Although Sykes wont give you the full address of the cottage prior to your full payment being made, it does show you where the property is on the map and it's not that difficult to work out where the cottage is from the image shown on the website, or you can google the rough address and see whats local to the cottage, and where the beach is. I would say that we will probably be back to Lanthorn Cottage at some point, as we loved how quiet it was there, surrounded by fields and birdsong. The Housekeeper Siobhan was amazing, she gave us all the information we needed before we got there and nothing was too much trouble, not that we had any problems at all. The only reason we contacted her was to ask a couple of questions before we arrived and to thank her when we left. All in all, we would highly recommend Lanthorn Cottage.

Stayed here with my family of 7 adults and 2 children for my graduation July 2020.

We had plenty of space and the property was very clean and well equipped. We really appreciated the bottled water in the fridge in the hot weather. The welcome book is a must read as it states where the keys are for the annexe etc and has some local pubs and small choice of take always, we went to loddon the swan on night of arrival, a short drive away with parking and the food was very nice. We really enjoyed the surrounding countryside and for us it was a good location to get into Norwich to go to the university. We were unsure before we arrived as a large party coming from multiple areas whether we would be able to park our 4 cars as the listing stated 3, however there was plenty of space. We also brought our own bbq but found there was a small in built one on site, with outside garden seating, which you can use disposable bbqs in. As we were a large group we used our own as it was bigger. Inside there is a king bedroom + bunk beds and en-suite, a twin bedroom with en-suite, a double room, a single room with upstairs family bathroom with bath, a further bathroom with shower downstairs and then an outside annexe with twin room and en-suite with shower. Stating as I wasn’t 100% sure until arriving of the bedroom / bathroom situation and where best to put people, possibly this could be more descriptive in the listing to give people a better idea before booking. The annexe is a great addition, however the top garden is quite steep so we had some able bodied family members stay up there, would be great for any older teenage children or a couple with young child who might want more space away from the main site. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and had a lovely memorable time.

We all enjoyed our stay at Cherry Tree cottage.

It is very spacious with tasteful decoration to a high standard. It is also well equipped with fittings and furniture throughout of good quality. Armchair seating in the lounge could get a bit cramped but we all found our own space. The single television did require a bit of management between the grandchildren’s game consoles and adult viewing. All contributing to an enjoyable holiday. However, we found a few niggly things that I feel necessary to provide comments. 1. The property is described as pet friendly but a close inspection of the boundary fences revealed large gaps through which our small dog would escape. Also a large gap beneath the main entrance gate. 2. The large dishwasher lower rack did not roll smoothly in and out of the machine. It appeared that one of the front wheels was misplaced and one was missing. This was found in a glass dish on the window sill. Within 30 seconds it was fixed. 3. The toilet seat in the annex was loose and made it difficult to use. 4. Our arrival time for key collection was delayed by two hours and we had to vacate an hour earlier. Told it was for additional cleaning to meet Covid 19 requirements. Personally I could see no evidence of any additional cleaning. Yes, the cottage and annex was reasonably clean but not that clean. The hand sanitiser just inside the main entrance for instance. Given the months when the property was not being rented it should have been spotless. As I said, we had a very nice time, loved the cottage and grounds despite the dramatic change in the English weather.
