What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ting - Verified booking

We stayed at this cottage during the Christmas holiday and found it to be a mixed experience.

The property itself is charming and in a beautiful location, but there were several issues that affected our stay. The heating in the house is not very strong, making it relatively cold during the winter months, and it cannot be adjusted, which was inconvenient. The shower water was also on the colder side, though still manageable. Additionally, the cottages are part of a connected complex, and one of the other houses triggered a fire alarm while setting up their fire pit. This disrupted all the cottages for about half an hour, including ours while we were enjoying Christmas dinner. We contacted the maintenance team, but they only recorded the issue over the phone and didn’t resolve it immediately. The next morning, the house lost power entirely, forcing us to change our plans and head into town instead of staying in. Overall, the place has potential, but these minor issues, especially during the colder months, detract from the experience. While it’s a decent option for a stay, I would recommend improvements to heating, water temperature, and maintenance response to make it more comfortable for guests.

Having stayed at the Hayloft many years ago, it was a shame to return to it in this way.

The booking was last minute, but after a few hours delay we were assured it was ready for guests. On arrival we found it full of cobwebs and dead insects like it had been empty for a while. The kitchen was like a crime scene with what we hope was red sauce and not blood stains on the tiles, the walls, the floors, the cupboards and the cooker hood. The cupboards were full of crockery and glasses which were stained and greasy to the touch with obvious food residue on them. Worst still the pillow cases had either blood or more red sauce on them which was not the ideal start to a first night holiday rest. A day cleaning most of this up ourselves and running the dishwasher a few times helped make things satisfactory. An offer of a ‘repeat’ clean was declined as we had planned a short escape for peace and privacy. Feel reluctant to leave a poor review for a place we previously loved, but the photographs show that the return was far from the standard we expected to come back to.

We like Spring Cottage a lot.

We've stayed twice before and hope to stay again. On this occasion the experience was initially seriously spoiled by the place being cold and the boiler not working. Lakelovers number was useless as we arrived after the phone line closed for the day. Very unhelpful on a Saturday. The helpline was equally useless. We left a message and got no response. The guidance advice was to call the owner but he/she had not left a number that we could find. Eventually we found the boiler manual and realised that maybe we had to re-pressurise the central heating system. Under the boiler we found a mess of pipes and taps. Once we'd identified the correct taps it was a quick process to re-pressurise the system and the boiler promptly started. We think the owner should leave much better guidance on this. Not having a working boiler (so no heat and no hot water) and having no access to outside help and no easy way to identify the problem and fix it is a traumatic way to start a holiday.

We arrived to find the flat had not been cleaned.

Sykes did a good job of contacting the cleaning supplier and getting it sorted but as we had arrived Saturday am and change over day was Friday this is unacceptable and we ended up wasting the first day of our holiday. The cleaners are separate to Sykes so it’s not their fault but as other reviewers have mentioned the same problem there’s obviously an issue. The flat has nice new furniture but is generally a bit grubby, needing a good deep clean, and the kitchen could do with some updating. The kitchen facilities are also limited - only 4 forks(!) There’s also damp patches with mould and a funny smell. Stuff we brought home smells damp! We knew the flat was next to a road but didn’t realise how busy a main road/how noisy it would be and it’s next to a pedestrian crossing with constant beeping! Would not recommend for a family with young kids.

Sadly this flat is let down by the poor state of the building maintenance on the outside which is cracked flaking paintwork and in need of big refreshing overall, and inside needs a thorough deep clean.

The bedrooms were nicely furnished and beds comfy but were let down by poor cleaning standard, cobwebs and dust in general. Lounge area good space but why a bar height table? The stools were hard to get on and off as they slipped on the wooden floors - only attempted once as didn’t want a fall. Again could see the potential and quality of oak furniture but the sofa in need of a good clean and very low. The steps down to the kitchen and bathroom very dark, the toilet roll holder in bathroom had been broken and left on a shelf! Did try to use the vacuum but t it didn’t work and the duster had more dust & cobwebs on to use. With a bit of tlc and a thorough deep clean throughout this flat could be ideal as it is so well placed for the bus station and short walk to the town centre. If it was Mine I would be considering changing the cleaning company.
